Pilot assessment of point-of-care differential white blood cell count analysers in schoolchildren with schistosomiasis.

Public health monitoring of schistosomiasis needs appropriate field-based technology, so to expand this portfolio, we conducted a first pilot assessment of point-of-care differential white blood cell count analysers. In total, 120 Malawian primary school children were examined with six key haematological parameters recorded. A notable proportion had abnormal differential white blood cell profiles with eosinophilia (48.3%) positively associated with schistosomiasis (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.3 to 7.7). Whilst costs of equipment and associated tests were non-trivial, both machine performance and haematol

Markedly elevated cerebrospinal fluid white blood cell count in multiple sclerosis: How high is too high?

BACKGROUND: The diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) is based on the revised McDonald's criteria, which includes clinical history, neurological examination, MRI findings and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis necessitating the exclusion of alternative explainable diagnoses. Markedly elevated CSF white blood cells (WBCs) over 50 (units) is considered a "red flag" for an alternative diagnosis apart from MS. OBJECTIVE: To present a man with typical relapsing-remitting MS (RRMS) despite markedly elevated CSF WBCs. CASE: A 33-year-old man presented with progressive bilateral numbness and weakness

Prediction of white blood cell count during exercise: a comparison between standalone and hybrid intelligent algorithms.

Decades of research in exercise immunology have demonstrated the profound impact of exercise on the immune response, influencing an individual's disease susceptibility. Accurate prediction of white blood cells (WBCs) count during exercise can help to design effective training programs to maintain optimal the immune system function and prevent its suppression. In this regard, this study aimed to develop an easy-to-use and efficient modelling tool for predicting WBCs count during exercise. To achieve this goal, the predictive power of a range of machine-learning algorithms, including six standal

Decreased Peripheral Blood Natural Killer Cell Count in Untreated Juvenile Dermatomyositis Is Associated with Muscle Weakness.

Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) is the most common inflammatory myopathy in pediatrics. This study evaluates the role of Natural Killer (NK) cells in Juvenile Dermatomyositis (JDM) pathophysiology. The study included 133 untreated JDM children with an NK cell count evaluation before treatment. NK cell subsets (CD56low/dim vs. CD 56bright) were examined in 9 untreated children. CD56 and perforin were evaluated in situ in six untreated JDM and three orthopedic, pediatric controls. 56% of treatment-naive JDM had reduced circulating NK cell counts, designated "low NK cell". This low NK group had mo

A case of fatal acute bacterial meningoencephalitis with extremely high cerebrospinal fluid white blood cell count.

Acute bacterial meningoencephalitis is still prevalent despite the widespread vaccination and still fatal despite the advances in antimicrobial therapy. Identifying patients at risk, lowering the threshold of clinical diagnosis and early treatment of such a curable disease will save patients' lives.

The Role of White Blood Cell Count in Perianal Pathologies: A Retrospective Analysis of Hematologic Malignancies.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Infections are the most common cause of anal and perianal pathologies in patients with hematological malignancies. Perianal infection diagnosis in this group of patients is difficult; thus, a careful anorectal examination is necessary with imaging modalities. In addition, the literature reveals a knowledge gap in the approach to anal pathologies in patients with neutropenia during diagnosis or chemotherapy. This study aimed to examine our institutional data on perianal complications and investigate the relationship between the white blood cell-neutrophil count, perian

Common infectious morbidity and white blood cell count in middle childhood predict behavior problems in adolescence.

We examined the associations of middle childhood infectious morbidity and inflammatory biomarkers with adolescent internalizing and externalizing behavior problems. We recruited 1018 Colombian schoolchildren aged 5-12 years into a cohort. We quantified white blood cell (WBC) counts and C-reactive protein at enrollment and prospectively recorded incidence of gastrointestinal, respiratory, and fever-associated morbidity during the first follow-up year. After a median 6 years, we assessed adolescent internalizing and externalizing behavior problems using child behavior checklist (CBCL) and youth

White blood cell count and incidence of hypertension in the general Japanese population: ISSA-CKD study.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between the white blood cell (WBC) count and hypertension in the general Japanese population. METHODS: We conducted a population-based retrospective cohort study using annual health check-up data of residents of Iki City, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan. A total of 2935 participants without hypertension at baseline were included in the present analysis. WBC counts were classified as tertile 1 (<4700/μL), tertile 2 (4700-5999/μL), and tertile 3 (≥6000/μL). The outcome was incident hypertension (blood pressure ≥140 mmHg). Multivariable-adjuste

Blood Cell Count Biomarkers, Risk, and Outcomes of Ischemia-Related Lower Limb Amputations: A Systematic Review.

Lower limb amputations due to ischemia represent an important health care and social issue. However, there are currently no specific biomarkers able to predict the risk of amputation and postamputation complications and prognosis. We conducted a systematic review of studies investigating whether blood cell count indexes of systemic inflammation are linked to the risk and the outcome of lower limb amputations due to ischemia. Overall, in 22 studies involving 8832 patients selected for review, several blood cell count indexes, particularly the neutrophil lymphocyte ratio, showed some promise in

Decoding Immuno-Competence: A Novel Analysis of Complete Blood Cell Count Data in COVID-19 Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: While 'immuno-competence' is a well-known term, it lacks an operational definition. To address this omission, this study explored whether the temporal and structured data of the complete blood cell count (CBC) can rapidly estimate immuno-competence. To this end, one or more ratios that included data on all monocytes, lymphocytes and neutrophils were investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Longitudinal CBC data collected from 101 COVID-19 patients (291 observations) were analyzed. Dynamics were estimated with several approaches, which included non-structured (the classic CBC format) a

Relationship between circulating white blood cell count and inflammatory skin disease: a bidirectional mendelian randomization study.

Observational studies have shown a strong association between circulating white blood cell counts (WBC) and inflammatory skin diseases such as acne and psoriasis. However, the causal nature of this relationship is unclear. We performed a two-way two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis to investigate potential causal relationships between leukocytes and inflammatory skin diseases. The circulating white blood cell count, basophil cell count, leukocyte cell count, lymphocyte cell count, eosinophil cell count, and neutrophil cell count data were obtained from the Blood Cell Consortium (BC

Chest Pain Diagnosed as Acute Leukemia: Focus on Coagulation Abnormalities Rather Than White Blood Cell Count.

Chest pain is an important symptom for emergency physicians. It is one of the most common causes for admission in emergency departments. Acute leukemia (AL) rarely causes chest symptoms due to ostalgia, and it is difficult to diagnose leukemia as the cause of chest pain. An 83-year-old woman with no history of trauma presented to the emergency department with a one-day history of severe chest pain. There were no abnormalities on electrocardiography, echocardiography, specific biomarkers for cardiac injury, or contrast computed tomography of the chest and pelvis. The white blood cell count was

High Reticulocyte Count with Abnormal Red Blood Cell Morphology in Normal Wistar Rats after Garlic Administration.

Despite the high acceptability of Allium sativa (Garlic) as a remedy for many diseases as earlier stated by manyresearchers, previous studies have shown that chronic and unregulated consumption of garlic may result to intra vascularhaemolytic anaemia in rats. The present study was conducted to examine the effect of crude extract of garlic on microscopicstatus of red blood cells and some other haematological indices of normal albino rats. The animals were grouped into two;group 1 were normal animals treated with water while group 2 were normal animals administered 150mg/kg body weight ofcrude e

Elevated admission white blood cell count in pregnant trauma patients: an indicator of ongoing placental abruption.

Placental abruption (PA) is a common cause of fetal demise in pregnant trauma patients. Diagnosis of PA may be difficult, and multiple diagnostic clues are currently used including uterine/abdominal pain and tenderness, bleeding, maternal hemodynamic instability, and evidence of PA by ultrasonography or other fetal monitoring. Although diagnosis may be problematic fetal and maternal survival are dependent on early diagnosis and intervention. The purpose of this study is to determine predictive factors present at admission associated with PA in trauma victims. Records of all pregnant trauma pat
