Body mass index and response to abatacept in rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggested that obesity could negatively affect the response to antitumour necrosis factor-α (TNFα) agents in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, data are lacking on whether obesity affects the response to abatacept (ABA). We aimed to determine whether body mass index (BMI) affects the response to ABA in RA. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this multicenter retrospective study, we included RA patients who received ABA. BMI was calculated at the initiation of treatment. After 6 months of treatment, change from baseline in DAS28, pain on a visual analog scale, erythrocyte s

Body mass index and response to infliximab in rheumatoid arthritis.

OBJECTIVES: Excess adipose tissue in obese individuals may have immunomodulating properties and pharmacokinetics consequences. Previous studies have suggested that obesity could negatively affect the response to anti-TNF-α agents, notably infliximab (IFX). We aimed to determine whether body mass index (BMI) is involved in the response to IFX in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). METHODS: We retrospectively examined data for 76 RA patients receiving IFX. BMI was calculated before treatment, and change from baseline in DAS28, pain on a visual analog scale, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive pro

Dapsone and body mass index in subjects with multibacillary leprosy.

BACKGROUND: The physiological changes in obese subjects can modify the pharmacokinetic profiles of drugs influencing the therapeutic efficacy. METHODS: In this study, the authors compare plasma dapsone trough levels of multibacillary leprosy subjects stratified by body mass index (BMI) to evaluate if obesity plays a significant role on drug levels. The relationship between drug levels and BMI was also determined. Dapsone was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography and BMI based on World Health Organization criteria. RESULTS: At steady state, the median plasma dapsone trough level

Body mass index and response to a multidisciplinary treatment of fibromyalgia.

The purpose of this study is to determine whether there are some differences in the treatment responses to a multidisciplinary fibromyalgia (FM) treatment related with the baseline body mass index (BMI) of the participants. Inclusion criteria consisted of female sex, a diagnosis of FM (American College of Rheumatology criteria), age between 18 and 60 years, and between 3 and 8 years of schooling. Baseline BMI was determined, and patients were randomly assigned to one of the two treatment conditions: conventional pharmacologic treatment or multidisciplinary treatment. Outcome measures were pain

The Impact of Body Mass Index as a Predictive Factor of Steatocholecystitis.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Obesity is a chronic inflammatory condition and is strongly linked to raised levels of pro-inflammatory factors and may lead to fatty infiltration of multiple internal organs including the gallbladder and liver, causing organ dysfunction. This study was performed to evaluate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and acute and chronic cholecystitis, and cholecystitis and cholesterolosis. We investigated the clinical implications of BMI as a predictive factor of cholesterol associated cholecystitis. METHODS: This retrospective study covered the period from January 2007

Relationship of maternal body mass index and height to twinning.

OBJECTIVE: Increasing use of fertility drugs is considered the primary cause for the recent increase in dizygotic twinning in developed countries. However, dizygotic twinning has also been related to obesity in foreign populations. We sought to confirm this relationship in U.S. pregnancies, which predated widespread use of fertility drugs. METHODS: We analyzed 51,783 pregnancies (561 twin) in the Collaborative Perinatal Project, which took place at 12 hospitals in the United States from 1959 to 1966. The occurrence of twinning was compared according to maternal self-reported prepregnant body

Relationship of Fat Mass Index and Fat Free Mass Index With Body Mass Index and Association With Function, Cognition and Sarcopenia in Pre-Frail Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Body mass index (BMI) is an inadequate marker of obesity, and cannot distinguish between fat mass, fat free mass and distribution of adipose tissue. The purpose of this study was twofold. First, to assess cross-sectional relationship of BMI with fat mass index (FMI), fat free mass index (FFMI) and ratio of fat mass to fat free mass (FM/FFM). Second, to study the association of FMI, FFMI and FM/FFM with physical function including sarcopenia, and cognition in pre-frail older adults. METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 191 pre-frail participants ≥ 65 years, 57.1% females. Data was col

Comparisons of Visceral Adiposity Index, Body Shape Index, Body Mass Index and Waist Circumference and Their Associations with Diabetes Mellitus in Adults.

The associations between visceral adiposity index (VAI), body shape index and diabetes in adults were inconsistent. We assessed the predictive capacity of VAI and body shape index for diabetes by comparing them with body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). We used the data of 5838 Chinese men and women aged ≥18 years from the 2009 China Health and Nutrition Survey. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the independent associations between Chinese VAI (CVAI) or body shape index and diabetes. The predictive power of the two indices was assessed using the r

Body Mass Index: Does It Really Matter for Breast Reductions?

BACKGROUND: Multiple studies have demonstrated higher complication rates for patients undergoing reduction mammoplasty who have high body mass index (BMI). As a result, some insurance companies and providers have used a BMI limit to deny coverage of this procedure to patients seeking surgery. Still, few studies have examined whether higher complication rates affect patient satisfaction. This study further explores the relationship between BMI, complications, and patient satisfaction in reduction mammoplasty. METHODS: A total of 899 consecutive patients at a single institution underwent reduct

Influence of body mass index on perceived lower facial asymmetry.

Facial asymmetry plays a crucial role in facial esthetics, and factors such as body mass index may influence its visibility by altering soft tissue thickness, which can lead to differences in how orthodontists, dentists, and laypeople perceive lower facial asymmetry. This discrepancy can affect aesthetic evaluations and treatment expectations. The aim of this study is to evaluate the perceptibility of lower facial asymmetry among individuals with different body mass indices as assessed by orthodontists, dentists, and laypeople. Frontal photographs were obtained from four female models represen

Body Mass Index and Incident Tuberculosis in Close Tuberculosis Contacts.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 95% of people infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis do not progress to tuberculosis (TB) disease. Identifying key determinants of TB progression could focus prevention efforts. METHODS: Contacts of pulmonary TB patients were enrolled in a prospective multi-center cohort study (Regional Prospective Observational Research in Tuberculosis [RePORT]-Brazil) from 2015 to 2019 and followed for 24 months. Empirical review and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, using baseline clinical and laboratory information, were used as dimension reduc

Should In Vitro Fertilization Policies Use the Body Mass Index?

Current guidance from the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) indicates that body mass index (BMI) ought not be used alone for in vitro fertilization (IVF) exclusionary policies, but the reasons for using BMI alongside other criteria are less clear. This article aims to fill a gap in the literature on this point and follow the findings to a logical conclusion regarding the role of BMI in IVF policies of the future. The article discusses why BMI might be useful in IVF policies, explores evidence that other metrics
