Apropos of an Olfactory Reference Syndrome case.

Olfactory Reference Syndrome (ORS) is one of the varieties of the somatic type of the Delusional Disorder, and it is characterized by the mistaken statement of a patient who declares the issuance of a foul odor coming from his own body and that others may notice. In the upcoming edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) it has been proposed to break off ORS as an independent pathology. From an illustrative case report, we review the relevant literature and discuss this proposal.

[A case of a child with bad odor].

The odor emitted by a patient may be one of the first major clues leading to an early diagnosis. Certain conditions produce a characteristic smell and several diseases are associated with a specific odor. We report an illustrative case and review olfactory physiology, the value of smell in physical examination, and finally discuss several illnesses associated with unusual odors.

[Olfactory dysfunction in Parkinson disease and REM sleep behavior disorder].

Olfactory dysfunction is an appealing biomarker for Parkinson disease (PD) because of the high prevalence (>90%) among PD patients and the relative ease of testing, as compared to other putative biomarkers such as neuroimaging of the dopamine system. Hyposmia develops during the early stages of PD and, therefore, may be one of the most sensitive markers for the early diagnosis of PD. Sniffin' Sticks, the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test, and the Odor Stick Identification test for the Japanese, a short and simple nonlexical, olfactory identification test, can be useful for d

Myiasis in the Neglected Tracheostomy Wound.

Myiasis is the term referring to an infestation of dipterous larvae in the living body tissue, where they feed on the tissue and cause infection. It is typically found in individuals living in unhygienic conditions, with foul-smelling odor emanating from neglected wounds or body discharge, which attract flies to lay their eggs in the affected area. Myiasis can cause life-threatening complications if maggots invade vital organs, resulting in sepsis, hemorrhage, and organ dysfunction. The mainstay of treatment includes mechanical removal of the maggots, wound debridement, daily wound dressing, a

The impact of olfactory dysfunction on interoceptive awareness.

This study aimed to investigate how the impairment of the olfactory system influences interoception. Interoception is known as the awareness of one's body or the sense of the condition of the body; more precisely, this construct is defined as the processing, representation, and perception of the internal physical state. Interoceptive sensitivity and chemosensory performance were assessed in 77 subjects, including 43 functional anosmics, 18 hyposmics, and 16 healthy controls. Interoceptive awareness was predicted by odor detection threshold, as well as the duration of olfactory loss in patients

Ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty treatment for axillary bromidrosis: clinical experience of 375 cases.

Bromidrosis is a condition of abnormal offensive body odor caused mostly by apocrine gland secretion from the axilla. Although no morbid sequelae are known, the odor can be disturbing enough to cause social impairment and psychological distress. Medical care is available but is temporary and yields limited clinical benefit. Surgical treatment may provide a more definite remedy through reduction of the apocrine gland. However, there are risks for complication following surgical treatment such as subdermal excision, subcutaneous shaving, en bloc excision, and liposuction. The search for a less i

Reduced dietary electrolyte balance affects growth performance and fecal odor compounds in growing pigs.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary electrolyte balance (dEB), which influences growth performance, has recently been suggested as a cost-effective acidification strategy for odor mitigation in swine production, yet its effects on fecal volatile fatty acids and volatile organic compounds remain poorly understood. This study was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary electrolyte balance (dEB) on growth performance and fecal odor-related compounds of growing pigs. METHODS: A total of 90 crossbred barrows (34.1 ± 2.97 kg) were allocated to three treatments with six replicate pens using a randomized compl

A preliminary evaluation on mixed probiotics as an antimicrobial spraying agent in growing pig barn.

The purpose of this study is to examine whether spraying an anti-microbial agent into the slurry pit will reduce the noxious odor substances from piggery barns. For this, a total of 200 crossbred ([Landrace × Yorkshire] × Duroc) growing pigs with an initial average body weight (BW) of 23.58 ± 1.47 kg were selected and housed in two different rooms, i.e. control (CON) and treatment (TRT). Each room has 100 pigs (60 gilts and 40 borrows). For a period of 42 days, all pigs were fed with corn-soybean meal-based basal diet. Later the noxious odor substances were measured by the following methods. F

Is the mouse nose a miniature version of a rat nose? A computational comparative study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although the mouse is a widely used animal model in biomedical research, there are few published studies on its nasal aerodynamics, potentially due to its small size. It is not appropriate to assume that mice and rats' nasal structure and airflow characteristics are the same because the ratio of nasal surface area to nasal volume and body weight is much higher in a mouse than in a rat. The aim of this work is to use anatomically accurate image-based computational fluid dynamic modeling to quantitatively reveal the characteristics of mouse nasal airflow and mass transp

Unraveling female communication through scent marks in the Norway rat.

Chemical communication by females remains poorly understood, with most attention focused on female advertisement of sexual receptivity to males or mother-offspring communication. However, in social species, scents are likely to be important for mediating competition and cooperation between females determining individual reproductive success. Here, we explore chemical signaling by female laboratory rats (Rattus norvegicus) to test i) whether females target their deployment of scent information differentially according to their sexual receptivity and the genetic identity of both female and male

Body-Mass-Index Associated Differences in Ortho- and Retronasal Olfactory Function and the Individual Significance of Olfaction in Health and Disease.

Odor (including flavor) perception plays a major role in dietary behavior. Orthonasal olfactory function (OOF) has been shown to decrease in obese subjects. Changes in retronasal olfactory function (ROF) after weight loss and in the individual significance of olfaction (ISO) in obesity are yet to be investigated. Firstly, 15 obese subjects were recruited in a pilot study and supported to conventionally lose weight. OOF (Sniffin' Sticks) was measured at the beginning and after 5.6 ± 1.3 months. Eleven subjects re-visited but barely lost weight and no major changes in OOF were observed. Secondly

"Toilet cake" encephalopathy.

Paradichlorobenzene (PDB) is an aromatic compound found in several household insect repellents and deodorizers. Paradichlorobenzene may cause dependence and damage when inhaled or ingested. Prior cases of PDB neurotoxicity involved ingestion or inhalation of mothballs or occupational exposure. We report the first case of PDB neurotoxicity from chronic toilet bowl deodorizers ("toilet cake") sniffing. A 19-year-old woman, 4 weeks postpartum, presented with gradual mental status deterioration, lethargy, and general weakness for 2 weeks. On physical examination, the patient was found to have a st

Self-estimation of oral malodor.

Bad breath (halitosis, oral malodor) is a common condition, usually the result of microbial putrefaction within the oral cavity. Often, people suffering from bad breath remain unaware of it, whereas others remain convinced that they suffer from foul oral malodor, although there is no evidence for such. The purpose of the present investigation was to determine whether objective self-measurement of oral malodors is possible. Each of 52 volunteers was asked to sample the odor from his/her mouth, tongue, and saliva. Results were compared with (i) self-assessments prior to (preconception) and follo

Hypomorphic CEP290/NPHP6 mutations result in anosmia caused by the selective loss of G proteins in cilia of olfactory sensory neurons.

Cilia regulate diverse functions such as motility, fluid balance, and sensory perception. The cilia of olfactory sensory neurons (OSNs) compartmentalize the signaling proteins necessary for odor detection; however, little is known regarding the mechanisms of protein sorting/entry into olfactory cilia. Nephrocystins are a family of ciliary proteins likely involved in cargo sorting during transport from the basal body to the ciliary axoneme. In humans, loss-of-function of the cilia-centrosomal protein CEP290/NPHP6 is associated with Joubert and Meckel syndromes, whereas hypomorphic mutations res

The Use of Biomass for Electricity Generation: A Scoping Review of Health Effects on Humans in Residential and Occupational Settings.

The utilization of biomass for power generation has become more prevalent globally. To survey the status of evidence concerning resulting health impacts and to depict potential research needs, a scoping-review was conducted. Biomass life cycle phases of interest were the conversion and combustion phases. Studies from occupational and residential settings were considered. The scoping review was conducted systematically, comprising an extensive literature search, a guided screening process, in-duplicate data extraction, and critical appraisal. Two reviewers executed most review steps. Nine artic

[Optical recording of the odor-evoked responses in olfactory structures of the brain of the terrestrial mollusk Helix].

Regular oscillations were recorded in olfactory part of the brain (procerebrum) of gastropod mollusk Helix both electrographically and optically. In general, oscillations resembled those in slugs reported earlier. Odor application caused a transient change in the procerebral oscillations followed by appearance of a special pattern. For the first time the evoked potential was recorded in procerebrum and mapped in reference to the area of oscillations. The area of spreading of evoked potential roughly corresponded to the neuropil projection, while the oscillations were recorded in the projection

Precocious Puberty Associated with Testicular Hormone-secreting Leydig Cell Tumor.

Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) are rare testicular tumors that may be a cause of precocious puberty in males. We present a 5-year-old boy with a five-month history of pubic hair appearance associated with an increase in penile length, scrotal hyperpigmentation, change in body odor, and bone age advanced by two years. His hormonal tests revealed the diagnosis of pseudo precocious puberty. Testicular ultrasound showed a unilateral right testicular enlargement. Surgery was performed to remove the mass. Histopathology confirmed the diagnosis of LCT. This case report highlights the importance of conside

Successful treatment by paroxetine of delusional disorder, somatic type, accompanied by severe secondary depression.

The case of a 42-year-old woman with delusional disorder, somatic type (DDST), with infestation delusion and delusions of body odor and halitosis accompanied by severe secondary depression is presented. These somatic delusions and depressive symptoms responded favorably to treatment with paroxetine 10 to 30 mg/d. Hypoperfusion in the left temporal and parietal lobes observed when she had marked clinical symptoms was improved at near recovery. The present report suggests that paroxetine is effective and a reasonable drug for DDST with secondary depression. It also supports previous observations

Headache-Associated Phantosmia as a Harbinger of Lewy Body Dementia.

Olfactory hallucinations, or phantosmias, can occur in many neurological, psychiatric, and medical conditions, but no widely used standardized approach exists to comprehensively assess qualitative olfactory dysfunction in the clinical setting. Additionally, medical professionals, patients, and their family members may not recognize phantosmia as a potentially neurological problem. Given the many possible etiologies for symptomatic phantosmia, it is important to recognize this unusual presentation and elicit a meaningful history to explore the potential underlying cause. We describe a 77-year-o

Necrotic enteritis challenge and high dietary sodium level affect odorant composition or emission from broilers.

Necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge and high dietary sodium (from sodium chloride) level on odor flux from broiler litter was investigated using 160 day-old Ross 308 male chicks randomly assigned to 4 dietary treatments with 4 replicates of 10 birds each. A 2 × 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was employed. Factors were: presence or absence of NE challenge and normal (1.6 g/kg) or high (4.0 g/kg) dietary sodium (Na) level. On d 20, odorants were collected from litter headspace with a flux hood and measured using selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS). On d 33, while challenge di
