Foreign body ingestion is a common complaint in the pediatric population; however, in adults, this entity remains quite rare. Most cases are managed conservatively with serial examinations and imaging. Rarely, foreign body ingestion may cause small bowel perforation and peritonitis in adults. Perforation often warrants operative management, and assessment of bowel viability is crucial. Here, we present a case of foreign body ingestion requiring exploration, without the need for bowel resection or repair. Although the need for operative intervention in adults after foreign body ingestion remain

The application of fungi in forensic investigations remains limited, particularly in cases involving dismembered human remains. In this study, we characterized the mycobiome of a decomposing human body and a detached upper limb recovered from different locations using culture-dependent methods. A total of 23 fungal species were identified across four culture media and three incubation temperatures, including 20 species from the body and ten from the upper limb. The dominant taxa included Yarrowia lipolytica, Yarrowia deformans, Mucor hiemalis, and Geotrichum candidum. Notably, seven species we

BACKGROUND: Body image disturbance is conceptualised as arising from the interaction between perceptual and attitudinal components, yet the psychological complexity embedded within the attitudinal domain remains underexplored. This study tested an integrated model of perceptual, attitudinal, and interoceptive influences on women's judgments of their own body size.
METHODS: In a sample of 269 adult women, behavioural measures of body size estimation were combined with network analysis, exploratory factor analysis, and regression modelling to distinguish psychological processes exerting direct

BACKGROUND: In patients with lower lateral medullary infarction (LMI) located under the vestibular nucleus, proprioceptive impairment due to dorsal spinocerebellar tract (DSCT) is considered a pathological condition for body lateropulsion. In patients with brainstem infarction located at or above the level of the vestibular nucleus, other pathways, such as the crossed vestibulothalamic tract (CVTT), are considered responsible.
RESEARCH QUESTION: The clinical course of body lateropulsion between each anatomical level of infarction remains unclear. Further, whether body lateropulsion refers to

Russell bodies are eosinophilic intracytoplasmic globules which are likely the result of disturbed secretion of immunoglobulins that accumulate within the plasma cell. Russell body collections have been identified within the stomach, known as Russell body gastritis. Similar lesions within the duodenum are referred to as Russell body duodenitis, which is rare. Several Russell body gastritis case reports are associated with Helicobacter pylori. However, the etiology of Russell body duodenitis remains unclear. Here we report the first case of Russell body duodenitis with immunoglobulin light chai

We present a case of skeletonised human remains. In the present case report, a body was exhumed from the ground above a cemetery. On exhumation, the body was partially-skeletonised with adipocere formation on the upper part of the body. Autopsy of the body showed two bullets in the right thigh muscle and lumbar vertebrae between L4 and L5. Postmortem changes and destruction of soft tissue made it impossible to determine direction of fire through the body, even in a careful complete autopsy.

Background: Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is a hepatotropic, blood-borne virus, but in up to one-third of infections of the transmission route remained unidentified. Viral genome copies of HCV have been identified in several body fluids, however, non-parental transmission upon exposure to contaminated body fluids seems to be rare. Several body fluids, e.g., tears and saliva, are renowned for their antimicrobial and antiviral properties, nevertheless, HCV stability has never been systematically analyzed in those fluids. Methods: We used state of the art infectious HCV cell culture techniques to inves

Wireless body sensor networks could enable unencumbered human-machine interfaces for robotics, assistive healthcare, and immersive computing. However, their widespread adoption remains constrained by bulky batteries and inefficient wireless communication. Here, we report a battery-free wireless body sensor network enabled by a dual-mode metamaterial textile for continuous and unobtrusive human-machine interactions. The textile, digitally embroidered with liquid-metal fibers, establishes ultra-wideband electromagnetic pathways to simultaneously support efficient near-field power transfer and Bl

The impact of global warming on wild bee decline threatens the pollination services they provide. Exposure to temperatures above optimal during development is known to reduce adult body size but how it affects the development and scaling of body parts remains unclear. In bees, a reduction in body size and/or a reduction in body parts, such as the antennae, tongue and wings, and how they scale with body size (i.e. their allometry) could severely affect their fitness. To date, it remains unclear how temperature affects body size and the scaling of morphological traits in bees. To address this kn

BackgroundSevere injuries and illnesses during an athlete's active career can lead to career interruption or retirement, and are associated with negative body image and decreased quality of life (QoL). However, the relationship between body image and QoL in retired female athletes with such medical histories remains unclear. Although support for athletes' health has recently increased, post-retirement support remains insufficient.ObjectivesThis study examined whether body appreciation, defined as respect for, acceptance of, and gratitude toward one's body, mediates the association between inju

PURPOSE: It is well described that adolescents with obesity show a higher cost of walking (Cw) compared with their lean counterparts, but it remains unknown how the degree of obesity and adiposity impact this Cw in this population. The present study, a secondary analysis of the EBOY cohort (Energy Balance and Obesity in Youth), explores the influence of the degree of obesity and adiposity on the Cw in adolescents with obesity.
METHOD: The Cw was assessed using indirect calorimetry, and body composition was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Participants were divided into tertiles b

Body packing is a well recognized method of drug trafficking by smuggling drug containers in the gastrointestinal tract. Medical professionals might get involved with body packers after presentation by law enforcement or in case of medical emergencies such as drug overdose or mechanical intestinal obstruction due to the containers within the gastrointestinal tract. Besides the medical aspects in treating these patients, physicians must be aware of all the different legal specifics in dealing with body packers. In case of medical emergencies, drug traffickers have the legal status of regular pa

OBJECTIVES: Whole-body vibration training (WBVT) is considered a time-saving, low-impact exercise modality that may aid in body mass management. However, the effectiveness of WBVT in changing body composition remains unclear. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the effects of WBVT on body mass, body mass index (BMI), and fat mass across different BMI and age categories.
METHODS: A systematic search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, Embase, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus was performed to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) investigating the effects of WBVT on weight

Body donation remains fundamental to anatomical education, supporting not only technical training but also the development of ethical awareness, empathy, and humanistic values among health professionals. In recent decades, the anatomical community has moved toward shared ethical standards centered on voluntary informed consent, transparency, and explicit recognition of donors. International consensus statements have promoted standardized acknowledgment practices, responsible stewardship of human remains, and the ethical use of body donor images. Across regions, sociocultural, religious, legal,

Accidental foreign body aspiration is not uncommon during a dental procedure and remains a real risk for many dental procedures. Although approximately 50% of patients are asymptomatic after aspiration of a foreign body, understanding the appropriate next steps in management of these patients is critical in preventing morbid and even lethal outcomes in some instances. Appropriate knowledge of identification and management of such instances is important for all practicing dentists. This article goes into the diagnosis and management of both uncomplicated foreign body ingestion and complicated f

Obesity remains a significant public health concern with substantial implications for military readiness. Rising rates of overweight and obesity among service members challenge recruitment, retention and deployability. Although the military continues to screen and manage obesity, current body composition tools and policies often fail to capture true health risk or operational capability. This narrative review evaluates the prevalence and impact of obesity in the US military, critiques existing assessment methods and discusses recent policy updates across service branches. Particular attention
