Effects of medications on regulation of body temperature of patients with Tourette syndrome.

Tourette syndrome is defined and characterized mainly by the presence of motor and phonic tics. Frequently, other medical, psychologic, and psychiatric symptoms coincide with Tourette syndrome. Despite extensive efforts extended over many years of research, the etiology leading to Tourette syndrome remains obscure. A number of hypotheses have been offered in the past to resolve the pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome. Based on the existence of an abnormal body temperature profile in patients with Tourette syndrome, an idiopathic hypothalamic disorder has been proposed to be involved in this a

Effect of etiology and topography of lesion on body temperature at stroke onset.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Hyperthermia is a well-known factor for neurologic deterioration, morbidity, and mortality in the early phase of stroke. However, the timing, localization of lesion, origin of stroke, which may influence body temperature, have not been clearly established. METHODS: The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between body temperature and origin, lesion topography, and prognosis at 3 months after onset of stroke. Axillary temperature was taken every hour for 72 hours in 473 patients with supra- or infratentorial cerebral vascular lesion. The time at which

Attributes of the oral cavity as a site for basal body temperature measurements.

The thermal topography of the oral cavity of 11 women was mapped with thermocouples in early morning waking conditions. A reference thermocouple was placed in the vagina. No significant difference was found in the time required to reach a steady-state oral temperature and in the achieved steady-state temperature difference (Tv-To) in the preovulatory and postovulatory phases of the menstrual cycle. Location of the thermocouple in the oral cavity had a significant effect on steady-state temperature differences. After equilibration of oral thermometers, women breathed through their mouths for ex

Ciliary body temperatures during cyclocryotherapy in the clinically normal dog.

Three cryosurgical units were compared on the basis of the ability of each unit to freeze the ciliary body of enucleated normal canine eyes. The coldest average temperatures reached were -13.4 C, -4.3 C, and -17.6 C. One of the units was then used to freeze the ciliary body in the left eye of 25 dogs for 5 minutes. Ciliary body temperatures were monitored every 15 s during cyclocryosurgery. In 18 eyes in situ, the coldest average temperature reached was -13.4 C. In 7 proptosed globes, the coldest average temperature reached was -13.8 C. The results were not significantly different (P less than

Effect of Imaging Distance and Chicken Body Size on Infrared Thermal Camera Accuracy in Body Temperature Measurement.

The accurate monitoring of body temperature is critical to poultry health and welfare. Rectal thermometry, the conventionally employed method, is invasive and stressful. Infrared thermography (IRT) offers a non-invasive alternative, but its accuracy may be influenced by body size and camera-to-object distance. This study evaluated the efficiency of thermal imaging compared with rectal thermometry in measuring chicken body temperature, with a focus on the effects of body size and measurement distance. A cross-sectional, repeated-measures design was applied to ninety clinically healthy Buff Suss

Acute dim light at night increases body mass, alters metabolism, and shifts core body temperature circadian rhythms.

The circadian system is primarily entrained by the ambient light environment and is fundamentally linked to metabolism. Mounting evidence suggests a causal relationship among aberrant light exposure, shift work, and metabolic disease. Previous research has demonstrated deleterious metabolic phenotypes elicited by chronic (>4 weeks) exposure to dim light at night (DLAN) (∼ 5 lux). However, the metabolic effects of short-term (<2 weeks) exposure to DLAN are unspecified. We hypothesized that metabolic alterations would arise in response to just 2 weeks of DLAN. Specifically, we predicted that mic

Circadian rhythms in bed rest: Monitoring core body temperature via heat-flux approach is superior to skin surface temperature.

Continuous recordings of core body temperature (CBT) are a well-established approach in describing circadian rhythms. Given the discomfort of invasive CBT measurement techniques, the use of skin temperature recordings has been proposed as a surrogate. More recently, we proposed a heat-flux approach (the so-called Double Sensor) for monitoring CBT. Studies investigating the reliability of the heat-flux approach over a 24-hour period, as well as comparisons with skin temperature recordings, are however lacking. The first aim of the study was therefore to compare rectal, skin, and heat-flux tempe

Effect of cold ambient temperature on heat flux, skin temperature, and thermal sensation at different body parts in elite biathletes.

INTRODUCTION: When exercising in the cold, optimizing thermoregulation is essential to maintain performance. However, no study has investigated thermal parameters with wearable-based measurements in a field setting among elite Nordic skiers. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the thermal response and sensation measured at different body parts during exercise in a cold environment in biathletes. METHODS: Thirteen Swiss national team biathletes (6 females, 7 males) performed two skiing bouts in the skating technique on two consecutive days (ambient temperature: -3.74 ± 2.32 °C) at 78 ± 4% of

Measuring Core Body Temperature Using a Non-invasive, Disposable Double-Sensor During Targeted Temperature Management in Post-cardiac Arrest Patients.

Background: Precisely measuring the core body temperature during targeted temperature management after return of spontaneous circulation is mandatory, as deviations from the recommended temperature might result in side effects such as electrolyte imbalances or infections. However, previous methods are invasive and lack easy handling. A disposable, non-invasive temperature sensor using the heat flux approach (Double Sensor), was tested against the standard method: an esophagus thermometer. Methods: The sensor was placed on the forehead of adult patients (n = 25, M/F, median age 61 years) with r

Thermal anomaly of erythrocyte osmotic fragility and aquaporin function at body temperature.

The recently proposed Interfacial Water Quantum Transition (IWQ) model presents a novel framework for functional changes in proteins at critical temperatures. Building on this, we hypothesized that red blood cell (RBC) osmotic fragility (OF) and aquaporin (AQP) function might exhibit similar transitions. We assessed the osmotic resistance of human and chicken RBCs across 24-50 °C. Mean corpuscular fragility (MCF50) was obtained by logistic curve fitting. In human RBCs, MCF50 consistently decreased with increasing temperature in whole blood, washed RBCs, and HgCl2-treated (known to reduce AQP w

SHANK3 in vagal sensory neurons regulates body temperature, systemic inflammation, and sepsis.

Excessive inflammation has been implicated in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), but the underlying mechanisms have not been fully studied. SHANK3 is a synaptic scaffolding protein and mutations of SHANK3 are involved in ASD. Shank3 expression in dorsal root ganglion sensory neurons also regulates heat pain and touch. However, the role of Shank3 in the vagus system remains unknown. We induced systemic inflammation by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and measured body temperature and serum IL-6 levels in mice. We found that homozygous and heterozygous Shank3 deficiency, but not Shank2 and Trpv1 deficiency

[Body temperature measurement in pigs: Are infrared thermometers a non-invasive alternative?].

OBJECTIVE: Internal body temperature is an essential parameter in evaluation an animal's general health status. The rectal temperature as 'gold standard' requires restraining of the animal which may cause stress especially when not accustomed to handling procedures. Stress on the other hand should whenever possible be avoided as it negatively affects animal welfare and may increase body temperature. The present study evaluated whether measuring the body surface temperature with an infrared thermometer (IRT) may represent a stressless alternative method to rectal body temperature measurements.

Beat the heat: Culex quinquefasciatus regulates its body temperature during blood feeding.

Mosquitoes are regarded as one of the most dangerous animals on earth. Because they are responsible for the spread of a wide range of both human and animal pathogens, research of the underlying mechanisms of their feeding behavior and physiology is critical. Among disease vector mosquitoes, Culex quinquefasciatus, a known carrier of West Nile virus and Western Equine Encephalitis, remains relatively understudied. As blood-sucking insects, adaptations (either at the molecular or physiological level) while feeding on warm blood are crucial to their survival, as overheating can result in death du

Bioresorbable, Wireless, Passive Sensors as Temporary Implants for Monitoring Regional Body Temperature.

Measurements of regional internal body temperatures can yield important information in the diagnosis of immune response-related anomalies, for precisely managing the effects of hyperthermia and hypothermia therapies and monitoring other transient body processes such as those associated with wound healing. Current approaches rely on permanent implants that require extraction surgeries after the measurements are no longer needed. Emerging classes of bioresorbable sensors eliminate the requirements for extraction, but their use of percutaneous wires for data acquisition leads to risks for infecti

Quantifying body surface temperature differences in canine coat types using infrared thermography.

Infrared thermography (IRT) has been used to assess the health of canines by measuring surface temperatures. However, little is known about the effect hair coat differences has on expected surface temperature in healthy canines under the influence of hair coat differences. The aim of this study was to identify the influence of coat characteristics in body surface temperature (BST) in canines (Canis lupus familiaris). To determine the changes in BST, an infrared thermal imaging camera (i.e. FLIR B400) was used. Thermal images of the left and right sides of privately-owned dogs (n = 50) were acq

Re-visiting the tympanic membrane vicinity as core body temperature measurement site.

Core body temperature (CBT) is an important and commonly used indicator of human health and endurance performance. A rise in baseline CBT can be attributed to an onset of flu, infection or even thermoregulatory failure when it becomes excessive. Sites which have been used for measurement of CBT include the pulmonary artery, the esophagus, the rectum and the tympanic membrane. Among them, the tympanic membrane is an attractive measurement site for CBT due to its unobtrusive nature and ease of measurement facilitated, especially when continuous CBT measurements are needed for monitoring such as
