The influence of 1 h of surface cooling on body temperature, variables which contribute to thermoregulation and selected hormones and metabolites has been investigated in seven patients susceptible to malignant hyperpyrexia (MH) and in seven matched control subjects. Cooling was achieved using a liquid conditioned coverall worn next to the skin. Skin temperature decreased similarly in both groups of subjects. Heat production increased in both groups, with a slightly higher heat production being seen in the MH group. Core temperature increased in both groups of subjects at the start of the cool

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of acute and chronic heat load events on scrotal temperature (ST), body temperature (BT) and bull behaviour, and to examine the interrelationship between these parameters; the underlying hypothesis was that adverse heat treatments delivered in a temperature controlled environment will lead to thermoregulatory dysfunction of the bull scrotum. Six sexually mature Wagyu bulls were used in this study with data loggers surgically implanted into the abdominal cavity and scrotum. Body temperate and ST were recorded at 30-min intervals for the

Male Wistar rats, initially maintained at an ambient temperature (Ta) of 23.8 degrees C, were subjected to one of seven different heat acclimation schedules under a 12:12-h light-dark cycle (lights on at 0600 h). Two groups of rats were exposed to Ta of 32.4 degrees C all day for 5 (HC5) or 10 (HC10) days. The other four groups were exposed to Ta of 32.8 degrees C for 5 h/day during the last half of the dark phase for 5 (NI5) or 10 (NI10) consecutive days or during the last half of the light phase for 5 (DI5) or 10 (DI10) consecutive days. Control rats (C) were kept at 23.8 degrees C throughou

It has been demonstrated by Takagi and his colleagues that pressure on a specified area of the body surface causes depression of sweating in a certain body division and changes in the relative sweat rates between body divisions. Furthermore, skin pressure has been assumed to suppress the central thermoregulatory activity, thus bringing about a rise or fall in body temperature in a hot or cool environment, respectively. We examined the effect of skin pressure applied to the bilateral subaxillary regions on body heat balance by means of continuous recordings of evaporative weight loss (total swe

Studies and case reports on excessive sweating frequently state that hyperhidrosis is a disease whose origin and mechanism are unknown. However, the term excessive is rarely based on systematic diagnostic measurements, instead being a description of the symptoms from patient histories, which suggests that hyperhidrosis is purely a problem involving the quantity of sweat, whereas it is a change in the control mechanism of sweating in which the need for and production of sweat are strongly disproportionate. This lack of proportion is perceived by those affected to be a limitation of activities o

The change in body temperature of 21 brachycephalic and 15 normocephalic dogs was recorded using a rectal temperature probe during a standardised 10-minute run on a treadmill and in the subsequent 10-minute recovery phase. While the basal body temperature of the two groups did not differ, the body temperature increase at all representative time points was significantly different (5 min: 0,39 ± 0,17°C vs 0,21 ± 0,12°C; 10 min: 0,59 ± 0,20°C vs 0,25 ± 0,13°C; 15 min: 0,52 ± 0,20°C vs 0,21 ± 0,14°C; 20 min: 0,44 ± 0,24°C vs 0,15 ± 0,15°C) and correlated with both the phenotypic head shape and rad

Three linked clinical observations prompted our current understanding of perioperative heat balance. The first was the extraordinarily rapid decrease in core temperature after induction of general anesthesia which led to an understanding of redistribution hypothermia. The second was the linear reduction in core temperature during the subsequent 2-3 h which led to an understanding of anesthetic effects on metabolic heat production and factors that influence cutaneous heat loss. And the third was the observation that core temperature reaches a plateau at about 34.5 °C which led to the understand

BACKGROUND: Hyperthermia complicates 21% of cases of intrapartum epidural analgesia, but the mechanism is unclear. One hypothesis is that blockade of cholinergic sympathetic nerves prevents active vasodilation and sweating, thus limiting heat loss. Because labour increases heat production, this could create a situation in which heat production exceeds loss, causing body temperature to rise. This physiological study tested a novel laboratory model of epidural-related hyperthermia, using exercise to simulate the increased heat production of labour and surface insulation to simulate the effect of

General anesthesia as used for rodent research can have adverse effects on physiologic mechanisms. Thermoregulation is often greatly inhibited, with resultant deleterious effects on cardiac and respiratory function. These potential effects can be mitigated by providing external heat support. The circulating warm water blanket and associated heat pump are often used in rodent procedures. The current study demonstrated that the heating pump and water blanket require quality control assessment to ensure adequate function. Our data showed that of the 6 pumps tested, 5 were able to achieve a temper

Flying endothermic insects thermoregulate, likely to improve flight performance. Males of the Sonoran Desert bee, Centris caesalpiniae, seek females at aggregations beginning at sunrise and cease flight near midday when the air temperature peaks. To identify the thermoregulatory mechanisms for C. caesalpiniae males, we measured tagma temperature, wingbeat frequency, water loss rate, metabolic rate and tagma mass of flying bees across shaded air temperatures of 19-38°C. Surface area, wet mass and dry mass declined with air temperature, suggesting that individual bees do not persist for the enti

The effects of intravenous (IV) fluid warming on core body temperature in a group of dogs undergoing an elective orthopedic procedure was studied. An IV fluid warmer was used alone or in conjunction with forced warmed air to determine the individual or additive effects of IV fluid warming. These effects were compared to those in dogs with no heat support or those with only forced warmed air in a randomized prospective study design. The conclusion was that IV fluid warming had no effect on the maintenance or preservation of core body temperature in this population of dogs, and that, as previous

An important safety concern when exercising burned patients is the potential for an excessive increase in core body temperature (hyperthermia=body core temperature>39 degrees C) during exercise. We examined the thermoregulatory response to exercise in the heat (31 degrees C, relative humidity 40%) in a 17-year-old boy with a 99% TBSA burn. A 30-minute exercise test was performed at an intensity of 75% of his peak aerobic capacity. Intestinal temperature was assessed via telemetry with an ingestible capsule. Intestinal temperature was measured before, during, and postexercise. The patient compl

We assessed the central-chemoreflex ventilatory responses to carbon dioxide in six male volunteers using a hyperoxic rebreathing technique. Hyperventilation prior to rebreathing allowed both the threshold and the sensitivity of the response to be measured. We used immersion in water to control the body temperature (tympanic). The water temperature was adjusted to be either thermo-neutral or hot so that body temperature either remained normal [+0.2 (0.04) degrees C, mean (SEM)] or was elevated by 1.5 (0.08) degrees C. The sensitivities of the central-chemoreflex ventilatory responses to carbon

Global intensification of heat extremes has heightened interest in defining critical environmental limits for human thermoregulation. These limits are commonly estimated from the inflection point in core temperature during progressive heat stress protocols. Esophageal temperature (Tes) is the criterion core temperature index, as it reflects right atrial blood temperature and responds rapidly to changes in the body's thermal state. However, measurements of rectal (Tre) and gastrointestinal temperature (Tgi) are more commonly used due to better participant tolerability. We evaluated agreement be

The increase of energy in the climate system caused by anthropogenic climate change is expected to disrupt predictable weather patterns and result in greater temperature extremes.1,2 As a result of these climate shifts, El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), which drives predictable periods of hot/dry and cool/wet across the Pacific, is expected to increase in variability and magnitude.3 These changes will significantly impact ectotherms, whose performance across a range of behaviors is dependent on local environmental temperatures.4 As such, we must understand the way individuals experience cli

OBJECTIVES: This study describes core temperature (Tcore) responses during football matches in warm to hot conditions. It aims to identify which physiological, running, and perceptual factors are associated with reaching high Tcore values while controlling for environmental conditions and cooling.
DESIGN: Forty highly trained male youth football players participated in at least two out of four matches held at temperatures between 26 and 42 °C. In three matches, heat mitigation strategies (passive rest and 17 °C drinks, or cold towels and 5 °C drinks) were applied pre-match, at half-time, and

This study evaluated the effects of using a heated anesthesia breathing circuit in addition to forced-air warming on body temperature in anesthetized rhesus macaques as compared with forced-air warming alone. Hypothermia is a common perianesthetic and intraoperative complication that can increase the risk of negative outcomes. Body heat is lost through 4 mechanisms during anesthesia: radiation, conduction, convection, and evaporation. Typical warming methods such as forced-air warming devices, conductive heating pads, and heated surgical tables only influence radiative and conductive mechanism
