BACKGROUND: Demineralized bone matrix is an osteoinductive allograft derived from processed bone that is commonly mixed with autogenous bone in fusion procedures to treat diseases of the spine. An increasing number of demineralized bone matrix-based products are commercially available for spinal fusion procedures, but osteoinductive variability has been found not only across different products but also among production lots from the same demineralized bone matrix formulation. The purpose of this study was to assess the lot-to-lot variability across a single demineralized bone matrix-based prod

Tissue engineering holds great promise for injury repair and replacement of defective body parts. While a number of techniques exist for creating living biological constructs in vitro, none have been demonstrated for in situ repair. Using novel geometric feedback-based approaches and through development of appropriate printing-material combinations, we demonstrate the in situ repair of both chondral and osteochondral defects that mimic naturally occurring pathologies. A calf femur was mounted in a custom jig and held within a robocasting-based additive manufacturing (AM) system. Two defects we

This paper describes a surgical technique to achieve root coverage in deep, wide gingival recessions using a root isolation procedure with ePTFE membrane, combined with tetracycline conditioning of the root surface and fibrin-fibronectin sealing system application. The technique was used on 15 patients with isolated mucogingival defects 4 to 6 mm deep. A large trapezium-shaped flap was raised 3 to 4 mm apical to the margin of the bone dehiscence. The root surface was thoroughly scaled by hand and rotating instruments. Tetracycline HCl solution (100 mg/ml) was topically applied for 4 minutes. E

The application of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) examinations in the assessment of bone mineral density (BMD) in the lumbar spine, hip, and forearm is the basic diagnostic method for recognition of osteoporosis. The constant development of DXA technique is due to the aging of societies and the increasing importance of osteoporosis as a public health problem. In order to assess the degree of bone demineralization in patients with hyperparathyroidism, forearm DXA examination is recommended. The vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) of the thoracic and lumbar spine, performed by a highly-s

Background: Biportal endoscopic transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (BESS-TLIF) is an emerging minimally invasive technique. This study aimed to evaluate the two-year radiological fusion outcomes of single-level BESS-TLIF using a specific banana-shaped, porous titanium interbody cage. Methods: This retrospective study reviewed 51 patients who underwent the specified procedure. The primary endpoint was the radiological fusion rate, assessed by computed tomography (CT) over 24 months using a three-grade system. Factors influencing fusion, particularly bone graft composition (demineralized bon

UNLABELLED: Aseptic non-unions of tibial shaft fractures often need surgical treatment which carry significant socio-economic implications. The causes for non-union include patient co-morbidities, high energy trauma, open fractures and fracture geometry. Oblique fractures are subject to shear forces and, if not adequately neutralised, will fail to unite. Experiments have shown that callus formation is poor in oblique fractures due to local shear stresses. We report a technique of minimally invasive transfocal transverse osteotomy and compression in a hexapod circular fixator, Taylor Spatial Fr

Applying our knowledge of heterotopic osteoinduction by bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) and demineralized bone matrix (DBM), we sought to induce ossification of membrane-isolated latissimus dorsi flaps in the rat. Our aim was to produce an animal model for a versatile "custom-made" bone island flap which could be used as a substitute for bone. Ten latissimus dorsi island flaps in nine Wistar rats, 5-6 weeks of age, were prepared using microsurgical techniques in aseptic conditions. The flaps were isolated from other tissues with silicone, Gortex or OpSite membranes. We applied 3-9 mg partiall

BACKGROUND: Alveolar cleft reconstruction using iliac crest bone graft is considered standard of care for children with complete cleft lip and palate at the time of mixed dentition. Harvesting bone may result in donor-site morbidity and additional operating time and length of hospitalization. Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP)-2 with a demineralized bone matrix is an alternative bone source for alveolar cleft reconstruction. The authors investigated the outcomes of rhBMP-2/demineralized bone matrix versus iliac crest bone graft for alveolar cleft reconstruction by reviewing p

We report on our use of a composite graft of lyophilized cancellous allogenic chips and demineralized bone matrix (DBM; Grafton; Osteotech, Eatontown, NJ) to manage traumatic osseous defects and nonunions. Data were prospectively collected from all patients who received this composite bone graft between 1996 and 2000. Only acute fractures with bone loss resulting in a uncontained defect and atrophic non-unions were included in the present study. Demographic data and complications related to composite use, tobacco use, and other comorbidities that could affect healing were evaluated. One hundre

After restoration of orbit wall fracture, preventing sequelae is important. An absorbable mesh is commonly used in orbit wall fracture, yet it has limitation due to orbit sagging when bony defect is larger than the moderate size (1 × 1 cm2). In this study, the authors present a satisfactory result in treating orbit wall fracture larger than the moderate size with a combination of absorbable mesh and demineralized bone matrix. From 2009 to 2012, 63 patients with bony defect larger than the moderate size, who were treated with a combination of absorbable mesh and demineralized bone matrix, were r

PURPOSE: Guided bone regeneration (GBR) is a widely used strategy for augmenting lost jawbone. The extent of bone gain varies among patients and typically remains unknown until after a healing period of 4-6 months. This study aims to demonstrate the use of novel ultrasonography techniques to provide predictive values for bone gain.
METHODS: This study included 16 subjects with 20 edentulous ridges undergoing GBR for lateral bone deficiencies of 1-3 mm in the posterior mandible. Ultrasound (US) images were captured at the surgical site 10 days postoperatively. Four US-derived parameters were a

BACKGROUND: Bone grafting is commonly used in spine surgery to supplement or replace the need for autografts. This is harvested, prepared, and utilized predominantly for osteoconductive properties. Anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, a procedure to decompress and fuse the spine which treats herniated discs and compressed nerves, commonly uses Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) interbody filled with allograft bone matrices to reconstruct the disc space after a discectomy is performed.
CASE DESCRIPTION: The presented case is one of a 57-year-old male patient who underwent an uneventful cervical 5

BACKGROUND: Atlantoaxial fusion is a surgical technique that is performed for the treatment of atlantoaxial instability. The standard surgical procedure is fixation of the atlantoaxial complex via a C1 lateral mass and C2 pedicle screw with posterior wiring. Bone grafting material may still be biomechanically suboptimal, such as autologous bone obtained from osteoporotic patients, and may result in collapse and loosening of posterior wiring.
METHODS: Fourteen patients with C1 lateral mass and C2 pedicle fixation as a result of atlantoaxial instability were included in this study. All patients

BACKGROUND: A randomized prospective trial of marrow-versus-steroids treatment of solitary bone cyst was ongoing. Protocol required contrast injection of the cyst. A subpopulation was noted to have large, rapid venous outflow of contrast material (omnipaque). Central embolization and resultant acute respiratory distress syndrome has been reported with bone marrow transplant. Particulate injection can result in bradycardia, low exhaled CO2, decreased SaO2 and voltage changes on electrocardiogram.
METHODS: Precordial Doppler can measure flow and turbulence centrally after a peripheral cyst inje

Multipotent adult progenitor cells (MAPCs) from bone marrow have been shown to be capable of forming bone, cartilage and other connective tissues. In addition, MAPCs differentiate into lineages that are different from their germ layers of origin. Previous studies showed the ability of MAPCs to improve cardiac function and control allogenic-reactive responses associated with acute graft versus host disease. In the current study, we evaluated the ability of MAPCs to produce bone matrix on demineralized bone allograft substrates. Specifically, MAPCs expressed alkaline phosphatase, produced extrac
