Five trypanotolerant N'Dama (Bos taurus) and five susceptible Boran (Bos indicus) cattle were challenged by tsetse flies infected with Trypanosoma congolense IL 13-E3. These animals had experienced five previous infections with T. congolense, each terminated by drug therapy. Immunoblotting and ELISA were used to determine isotype and specificity of antibody responses to trypanosome invariant antigens. Three Boran (Bos indicus) cattle infected with T. congolense IL 1180, and two uninfected control Boran cattle were used to study the effect of trypanosomiasis on the function of the thyroid gland. On a weekly basis, plasma thyroxine (T4) was measured by 125I-radioimmunoassay. Results indicated that T. congolense caused a significant decline in plasma T4 concentration in infected animals.

The oxidative addition of bromo(phosphino)boranes to platinum(0) compounds enabled the formation of platinum(II) complexes with unprecedented side-on coordination of the boryl ligand. Alkyl-B(C6F5)2 boranes are markedly α-CH-acidic. Using DFT we have calculated the pK a-values of a series of examples. Typically, (C6F5)2B-CH3 [pK a (calcd) = 18.3 in DMSO, 16.2 in dichloromethane] is almost as CH-acidic as cyclopentadiene. Neutral molecular zinc(ii) dihydrides supported by N-heterocyclic carbene ligands bearing a pendant phosphine group were synthesized and then reacted with carbon dioxide to afford zinc diformates. The zinc dihydrides were found to be active catalysts for hydroboration of carbon dioxide under mild conditions, selectively giving boryl formate, bis(boryl)acetal, or methoxy borane compounds by changing the nature of the borane reductant.

[reaction: see text] (S)-2-(tert-Butylmethylphosphino)phenol and its methyl ether were synthesized from tert-butyldichlorophosphine via optically active phosphine-boranes as the intermediates. The former compound was used as a P/O hybrid ligand in the Cu-catalyzed asymmetric conjugate addition of diethylzinc to acyclic enones to achieve high enantioselectivity of up to 96%.

It has been reported that some breeds of cattle such as the N'Dama mount a more effective antibody response to the variable surface glycoprotein coat of trypanosomes and that this may contribute to their ability to control the infection. Thus we have investigated antibody responses to surface exposed epitopes of the variable surface glycoprotein in Trypanosoma congolense-infected N'Dama (trypanotolerant) and Boran (susceptible) cattle. Radical hydroboration reactions have only recently been reported and are still rare. Here we describe a photoredox radical hydroboration of α,β-unsaturated esters, amides, ketones, and nitriles with NHC-boranes that uses only an organocatalyst and visible light. The conditions are mild, the substrate scope is broad, and the α/β regioselectivity is high. The reaction requires only the organocatalyst; there is no costly metal, and there are no other additives (base, cocatalyst, initiator).

The title compound, [Ag2(NO3)2(C14H38B10P2)2]·2CH2Cl2, was synthesized by the reaction of 1,2-bis-(diiso-propyl-phosphan-yl)-1,2-dicarba-closo-dodeca-borane with AgNO3.
