Evaluation of response to a cholera outbreak in January 2024 using the 7-1-7 timeliness metrics: a case study of Elegu Point of Entry, Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Cholera is a major public health threat in Uganda, especially in border districts prone to outbreaks from cross-border movement. We investigated and evaluated the initial response to a January 2024 cholera outbreak in Elegu Town, on the Uganda-South Sudan border, using the 7-1-7 timeliness metrics to assess detection, notification, and response capacities, highlighting Uganda's preparedness and challenges in managing cross-border outbreaks. METHODS: We defined a suspected case as the onset of acute watery diarrhea in an asylum seeker at the Elegu border point from January to Febru

COVID-19 and Influenza Incidence among Active Component United States Military Service Members at Installations in US-Mexico Border States (2020-2023).

The objective of this study was to compare coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and influenza among US active-component service members (ACSMs) stationed at military installations near the US-Mexico border (Arizona, California, New Mexico, and Texas). A retrospective cohort study was conducted to assess diagnoses of influenza (2020-2024) and COVID-19 (2020-2023). Incidence rate ratios (IRRs) comparing influenza and COVID-19 at border and non-border locations were calculated for laboratory-confirmed and/or symptom-based encounter diagnoses. Forty-five percent of ACSMs included in the influenza (

Abnormal pancreolauryl tests in coeliac disease: lack of correlation with the degree of intestinal mucosal damage.

AIMS: To determine the frequency of abnormal pancreolauryl tests in untreated and treated adults with coeliac disease and to see whether abnormalities in treated coeliac patients correlate with the degree of recovery of intestinal morphology or brush border enzyme activity. METHODS: Pancreolauryl tests were performed in a study population of 57 adult coeliac patients (25 on gluten containing diets and 32 on gluten free diets), 59 symptomatic controls, and eight patients with pancreatic disease. Brush border enzyme activity and morphological assessment were performed on small intestinal biopsi

Physiological brain clearance architecture revealed by neuronal protein tracing.

The brain must efficiently clear protein waste to maintain homeostasis, yet physiological drainage pathways remain poorly defined. Standard tracer injection approaches may not reflect endogenous efflux. Here, we develop a non-invasive genetic system to trace neuron-derived protein clearance from the brain to cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and border tissues. We identify distinct drainage routes and border hotspots missed by tracer injection, confirmed by bioorthogonal labeling of endogenous neuronal proteins. Pulse-chase kinetics reveal slow skull outflow versus rapid dural and nasal clearance. Tra

Policy challenges in the provision of COVID-19 border screening: evidence from eight countries.

BACKGROUND: While border screening measures were widely adopted by countries during the COVID-19 pandemic, a lack of consensus on the utility of border screening created a gap in best practice for its implementation. As such, countries adopted a diversity of approaches, providing an opportunity to evaluate the configuration and evolution of border screening systems. The article addresses three questions: (i) how did countries configure their border screening systems for COVID-19? (ii) In what contexts did countries rely on public or private providers of these services? (iii) what do policies a

Health Outcomes in EU Cross-Border Regions: A Scoping Review.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review examines health outcome trends in European cross-border regions, identifies available evidence, and highlights research gaps. The European Union's integration efforts aim to harmonise living standards and healthcare access. Removed border controls and freedom of movement enhanced service availability, benefiting populations in border regions with cross-border healthcare access. However, these populations are exposed to different institutional settings, highlighting health differences worth studying. METHODS: We employed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology, u

Experimental pestivirus infections in pregnant goats.

Fifty pregnant goats, inoculated intramuscularly at different gestational stages with a non-cytopathic ovine pestivirus or a cytopathic bovine pestivirus, all developed pestivirus-neutralizing antibodies within 5 weeks of inoculation. The incidence of reproductive failure was similar for the two agents. Parturition at term with only healthy kids occurred in 13 (26 per cent) of the goats. Viable kids were not born to any of the 17 goats inoculated at about day 40 of gestation. Three of the 17 delivered dead or weak kids, seven aborted and three of seven which were necropsied during pregnancy ha

Effectiveness and impact of the cross-border healthcare model as implemented by non-governmental organizations: case study of the malaria control programs by health poverty action on the China-Myanmar border.

BACKGROUND: In the Yunnan province of China, 18 counties in six prefectures border Myanmar. Due to its particular combination of geographic features, climate conditions, and cultural landscape, the area provides a suitable environment for the spread of insect-borne diseases such as malaria. In five identified Myanmar Special Regions along the China-Myanmar border, economic development is lagging, people live in extreme poverty, and the healthcare system is fragile. Coupled with political and other reasons, this precludes malaria control work to be effectively carried out in Myanmar, resulting

Distribution of Silent Cerebral Infarcts in Adults With Sickle Cell Disease.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Previously we demonstrated that 90% of infarcts in children with sickle cell anemia occur in the border zone regions of cerebral blood flow (CBF). We tested the hypothesis that adults with sickle cell disease (SCD) have silent cerebral infarcts (SCIs) in the border zone regions, with a secondary hypothesis that older age and traditional stroke risk factors would be associated with infarct occurrence in regions outside the border zones. METHODS: Adults with SCD 18-50 years of age were enrolled in a cross-sectional study at 2 centers and completed a 3T brain MRI. Part

Ethnic and border differences on blood cancer presentation and outcomes: A Texas population-based study.

BACKGROUND: The Texas/Chihuahua (US/Mexico) border is a medically underserved region with many reported barriers for health care access. Although Hispanic ethnicity is associated with health disparities for many different diseases, the population-based estimates of incidence and survival for patients with blood cancer along the border are unknown. The authors hypothesized that Hispanic ethnicity and border proximity is associated with poor blood cancer outcomes. METHODS: Data from the Texas Cancer Registry (1995-2016) were used to investigate the primary exposures of patient ethnicity (Hispan

Tumor border configuration added to TNM staging better stratifies stage II colorectal cancer patients into prognostic subgroups.

BACKGROUND: Reproducible and well characterized prognostic histomorphologic criteria added to current pathological staging could have an immediate effect on refining prognosis in colorectal cancer. The aim of this study was to determine the additive effect of tumor border configuration and peritumoral lymphocytic infiltration on the selection of patients for adjuvant therapy classified by TNM. METHODS: A total of 1420 primary colorectal cancers with complete clinicopathological data from multiple treatment centers were analyzed. The prognostic effect of tumor border configuration (pushing or

Ultrasound findings suggestive of microscopic extranodal extension in papillary thyroid carcinoma.

PURPOSE: Extranodal extension (ENE) of metastatic carcinoma in patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) has been associated with an increased risk of recurrent disease, persistent disease, and disease-specific mortality; however, ultrasound findings suggestive of ENE have not been well established. In this study, we aimed to identify ultrasound findings suggestive of microscopic ENE and validate them histologically. METHODS: We retrospectively examined the ultrasound and histological findings of 21 PTC patients with microscopic ENE and 46 without ENE. RESULTS: Node matting, irregular

Clinical and laboratory findings in border collies with presumed hereditary juvenile cobalamin deficiency.

Juvenile cobalamin deficiency is a rare disease in border collies and its diagnosis requires a high level of clinical suspicion. The goal of this study was to increase awareness of this disease by describing the clinical and laboratory findings in four young border collies with inherited cobalamin deficiency. The median age of the dogs was 11.5 mo (range, 8-42 mo), and two of the four dogs were full siblings. Clinical signs included intermittent lethargy (n = 4), poor body condition (n = 4), odynophagia (n = 2), glossitis (n = 1), and bradyarrhythmia (n = 1). Pertinent laboratory abnormalities

Ultrasound segmentation analysis via distinct and completed anatomical borders.

PURPOSE: Segmenting ultrasound images is important for precise area and/or volume calculations, ensuring reliable diagnosis and effective treatment evaluation for diseases. Recently, many segmentation methods have been proposed and shown impressive performance. However, currently, there is no deeper understanding of how networks segment target regions or how they define the boundaries. In this paper, we present a new approach that analyzes ultrasound segmentation networks in terms of learned borders because border delimitation is challenging in ultrasound. METHODS: We propose a way to split t

Delineation of the normal esophagus at computed tomography.

It has been accepted by many that the esophagus in its entire length is easy to delineate at CT in most patients due to surrounding fat planes. As this is not the experience of the present authors, the CT of the thorax in 100 normal men and women without mediastinal disease and in good nutritional status was reviewed, to record the relationship between the esophagus and neighbouring structures. In the upper third of the esophagus there is almost never a definite border between its wall and that of the trachea, while a separating border or even a fat plane can be seen to the spine in between 25

Borders of STN determined by MRI versus the electrophysiological STN. A comparison using intraoperative CT.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequence most accurately corresponds with the electrophysiological subthalamic nucleus (STN) obtained during microelectrode recording (MER, MER-STN). CT/MRI fusion allows for comparison between MER-STN and the STN visualized on preoperative MRI (MRI-STN). OBJECTIVE: To compare dorsal and ventral STN borders as seen on 3-Tesla T2-weighted (T2) and susceptibility weighted images (SWI) with electrophysiological STN borders in deep brain stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease (PD). METHODS: Intraoperative CT (iCT) was performed

Characterization of the Transition Zone in Short Segment Hirschsprung Disease Using Calretinin Immunostaining.

Introduction: The detailed expression pattern of calretinin immunohistochemistry in the transition zone (TZ) of Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) has not yet been reported. This study aims to examine the value of calretinin immunohistochemistry for more accurately determining the distal and proximal border of the TZ in short segment HSCR. Methods: Specimens of pull-through surgery from 51 patients with short form of HSCR were analyzed on two longitudinal strips using hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and calretinin immunohistochemistry. Results: In all but two patients, the first appearance of ca

Intestinal parasitic infections in officers of the Border Guard in East Poland.

BACKGROUND: Poland has experienced increased economic migration since 2021. Large waves of migrants, mostly from Asian and African countries, are trying to get into the European Union by crossing Poland's eastern border illegally. The influx of illegal migrants into Poland is the result of a policy adopted by the Belarusian and Russian regimes that are trying to provoke another migrant crisis in Europe. In the opinion of some Polish politicians illegal migration contributes to the spread of parasitic diseases in our country as many migrants arriving into Poland carry intestinal parasites. The

Identification of surgical biopsy borders by use of india ink.

Separation of surgical biopsy borders from artifactual borders created during trimming of biopsy specimens is necessary to avoid misinterpretation of histologic borders. Misinterpretation of a contaminated trimming border as a surgical border may lead to additional surgery and excessive removal of normal tissue. Likewise, a neoplasm may regrow locally or metastasize if a surgical border infiltrated with neoplastic cells is falsely assumed to be an artifactual trimming border. The use of India ink for distinguishing between surgical biopsy borders and artifactual borders was evaluated. Ten norm
