Craniofacial resection for intracranial inverting papilloma and frontal sinus mucocele.

Inverting papilloma is a locally aggressive neoplasm; however, intracranial extension is very rare. The authors herein report a case of massive inverting papilloma with intracranial extension and an associated frontal sinus mucocele, causing marked frontal lobe compression. Treatment consisted of combined anterior craniofacial resection. Magnetic resonance imaging provided accurate preoperative differentiation between neoplasm and inflammation. Skull base reconstruction may prove more difficult when there is significant frontal dead space resulting from chronic brain displacement by an associa

Cytomegalovirus DNA in non-glioblastoma multiforme brain tumors of infants.

PURPOSE: CMV antigens have been detected in some brain tumors specially glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). As brain tumors in the first years of life are among the most aggressive neoplasms with poor prognosis, novel therapeutic options like targeted therapy against virus antigens are demanded. Infantile central nervous system tumors, other than GBM, have not been so far studied for CMV. To our best knowledge, this is the first study in which the presence of CMV-DNA, as a potential viral target for therapy, in non-GBM infantile brain tumors has been investigated. METHODS: The paraffin blocks of n

Complications Following Stereotactic Needle Biopsy of Intracranial Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Data from single-institution studies suggest that perioperative complication rates after stereotactic needle brain biopsies range from 6% to 12%, with permanent morbidity and mortality ranging from 3.1% to 6.4% and 0% to 1.7%, respectively. However, no population-level data are available. We conducted a population-based analysis to study complications after needle brain biopsy. METHODS: We analyzed patients recorded in the Nationwide Inpatient Sample who underwent stereotactic needle brain biopsy for neoplastic lesions between 2006 and 2012. A multivariate logistic model was used

Olfactory neuroblastoma in a heifer.

A nasal neuroblastoma (esthesioneuroblastoma) extending into the brain in a heifer produced mouth breathing and proptosis. The mass filled much of the left nasal cavity, palatine sinus and maxillary sinus, with turbinate atrophy and deviation of the septum. Caudally the neoplasm extended into the nasopharynx and olfactory bulb. It was a cellular neoplasm composed of small, undifferentiated piriform cells showing infrequent pseudorosettes and immature axonal processes. Mitosis was common is some areas.

Diagnosing necrotic meningioma: a distinctive imaging pattern in diffusion MRI and MR spectroscopy.

The differential diagnosis of necrotic meningiomas includes brain abscess and malignant neoplasms. We report and discuss hereby the work-up of two patients diagnosed with necrotic meningioma using diffusion-weighted imaging, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, resective surgery, and histopathology. The purpose of the present article is to add to the scant literature on the use of advanced imaging modalities in the routine investigation of brain lesions and their utility in arriving at the final diagnosis.

Neurofibromatosis from Head to Toe: What the Radiologist Needs to Know.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) are autosomal dominant inherited neurocutaneous disorders or phakomatoses secondary to mutations in the NF1 and NF2 tumor suppressor genes, respectively. Although they share a common name, NF1 and NF2 are distinct disorders with a wide range of multisystem manifestations that include benign and malignant tumors. Imaging plays an essential role in diagnosis, surveillance, and management of individuals with NF1 and NF2. Therefore, it is crucial for radiologists to be familiar with the imaging features of NF1 and NF2 to allow promp

Meningiomas mimicking cerebral schwannoma.

A brain tumor with histological features reminiscent of schwannoma with underlying meningioangiomatosis was subjected to electron microscopic and immunohistochemical analysis, which confirmed the neoplasm as a meningioma. This prompted reexamination of a similar tumor, described in a previous publication as a cerebral schwannoma, with identical immunohistochemical techniques. The results obtained favored alteration of this diagnosis to that of meningioma. This experience has led the authors to recommend the use of immunohistochemistry techniques when evaluating unusual intracranial neoplasms.

Trends in cancer mortality in Czechoslovakia 1949-1978.

The analysis of the trends of the principal causes of deaths in Czechoslovakia indicated leading second position of malignant neoplasms in the whole mortality over the period 1949 through 1978. The rapidly growing all sites cancer mortality trends in males together with their unimportant changes in females resulted in the steadily increasing overmortality of males. Among digestive organs important decrease of stomach and in lesser extent also of oesophageal cancers with simultaneously increasing mortality trends of malignant neoplasms of colon, pancreas and rectum in both sexes were observed.

Early-Stage Supraglottic "In Situ" Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Larynx Incidentally Detected by 18F-Fluorocholine PET/CT.

F-fluorocholine (F-FCH) PET/CT is widely used to study patients affected by prostate cancer. Despite its specificity, however, F-FCH may be taken up by other neoplasms such as multiple myeloma, lymphomas, lung, bladder, and colon cancer; brain tumors; and renal and hepatocellular carcinoma. This is due to its ability to evaluate the cell proliferation, which is typical of neoplastic cells. While this behavior may be an opportunity to image more neoplasms, on the other hand it could represent a source of error in the evaluation of the images. Here we present the case of a laryngeal squamous cel

Thalamic aphasia secondary to glioblastoma multiforme.

BACKGROUND: Thalamic aphasia is an unusual clinical presentation of brain neoplasm with few cases reported. Herein, we present a case of an adult woman with thalamic aphasia due to glioblastoma of the thalamus. CASE PRESENTATION: A 57-year-old female patient presented with difficulty walking, slow speech and cognition and altered mental status. At baseline, she was conversant and interactive. Physical examination showed right hemiparesis in addition to word finding difficulties, an impaired naming of objects and semantic paraphasia but preserved repetition and comprehension. Malignant Ependymoblastoma Mimicking a Benign Pilocytic Astrocytoma.

Ependymoblastoma is an uncommon, exceedingly malignant brain neoplasm that adversely influences children's quality of life. Ependymoblastoma represents a subtype of primitive neuroectodermal tumors, categorized as grade IV, according to the 2007 World Health Organization (WHO) classification of central nervous system tumors. Ependymoblastomas are often located in the supratentorial zone and often associated with the ventricular system. Histopathological sections of the tumor revealed uniform, primitive, small blue cells, with multi-layered rosettes, accompanied by abundant mitoses. The clinica

[Vascular endothelial growth factor expression in cerebral neoplasms].

Angiogenesis plays an important role in growth of neoplasm. Among a variety of proangiogenic agents, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) is regarded as a crucial mediator of tumour angiogenesis. It acts in a paracrine way through the receptors localised in endothelial cells. Many authors maintain that rich vasculature of the neoplasm is associated with its malignant nature. The aim of this study was to examine the relations between expression of VEGF and features of malignancy of brain tumours. Sixty-seven samples of brain tumours were examined: 17 meningiomas, 34 gliomas and 16 metastas

Disseminated Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Neoplasm (NEN) with an Uncommon Localisation in the Central Nervous System. A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NEN) are rare neoplasms that originate from neuroendocrine cells and are characterized by the potential of hormonal activity. Approximately 70% of these tumours are located in the gastrointestinal system (GI), followed by the bronchi, endocrine glands-like C cells of the thyroid (medullary carcinoma), the parasympathetic and sympathetic system (paragangliomas, pheochromocytoma) and other very rare locations. The prevalence of cerebral metastases in neuroendocrine tumours is estimated by various authors to be approximately 1.5-5%. When the primary tumour is

[Rol of thallium-201/gallium-67 cerebral tomogammography in the differential diagnosis of cerebral space occupying lesions].

INTRODUCTION: Central nervous system (CNS) neoplasms are 10% of all tumors. A metastasis of an unknown primary neoplasm should be suspected in an adult with a cerebral tumor. In this location, the origin of most of metastases (62%) is lung, breast, skin and kidney. However, a differentiation of CNS focal infection and brain tumor, based on clinical status and morphologic imaging, may be difficult. A positive Tl-201 next to a negative Ga-67 SPECT brain scans is entirely in accord with brain metastatic tumor. CLINICAL CASE: A 72-year-old man, with history of excised bladder cancer, was admitted

How often are nonenhancing supratentorial gliomas malignant? A population study.

The presence of contrast enhancement in a brain tumor is often regarded as a sign of malignancy. The authors identified 314 patients with malignant and low-grade supratentorial glial neoplasms in an unselected population, 58 of which lacked contrast enhancement on preoperative neuroimaging. Nonenhancing gliomas were malignant in approximately one third of cases, especially in older patients. Histologic confirmation of the diagnosis is therefore important in all patients suspected of harboring a primary glial neoplasm.

Epidermal growth factor binding in intracranial neoplasms: preliminary biochemical and clinicopathological findings.

The binding capacity for epidermal growth factor (EGF) was determined in 34 intracranial neoplasms (14 glioblastoma, seven low-grade gliomas, six meningiomas, and seven others) and four specimens of normal brain by using [I125]EGF. EGF binding and binding affinity of the sites in the tumour and brain samples were compared to placenta and rat liver. All specimens of normal brain were negative. Ten of 14 glioblastoma specimens contained EGF binding (level range 10-39,660 fmol/mg protein), however, ligand binding affinity was high in only three tumours. Only one of nine low-grade gliomas containe

Incidence, Prognostic Factors, and Survival Trend in Pineal Gland Tumors: A Population-Based Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Pineal gland tumors are exceedingly rare and account for 0.4-1.0% of brain neoplasms. Their rarity has confounded a clear understanding of the prognostic factors and standards of care for these neoplasms. In this study, we aimed to investigate the incidence, prognostic indicators, and survival trend of tumors emanating from the pineal gland. METHODS: We accessed the Surveillance, Epidemiology, End Results (SEER) Program for pineal gland tumors from 1975-2016. A multivariate Cox regression model was used to investigate the impact of clinicopathological parameters on all-cause mor

Synchronous cerebral and pleural solitary fibrous tumour.

Solitary fibrous tumours of the pleura (SFTPs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms usually originating from the visceral pleura, but they have been reported in many other sites. To the best of our knowledge, this report describes the first known case of synchronous SFTP in the left visceral pleura and brain. The SFTP of the brain was resected via craniotomy, whereas the SFTP of the pleura, widely compressing and displacing the left lower lung lobe, was resected via left thoracotomy.

Cytologic features of mesenchymal, melanocytic and haematolymphoid tumours of the central nervous system and metastases.

The current World Health Organization (WHO) classification of central nervous system (CNS) tumours includes several neoplasms that, while occurring in this location, are more frequently seen extracranially. These include mesenchymal, melanocytic and haematolymphoid neoplasms, as well as metastases. A few of these entities are exclusive of the CNS and have no extracranial counterpart. Despite their diverse histogenesis, these neoplasms share a peculiar predilection for involving meningeal structures. In fact, in the context of an intraoperative pathologic consultation of a meningeal tumour, vir

DNA repair protects against cutaneous and internal neoplasia: evidence from xeroderma pigmentosum.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP), is a rare, autosomal recessive disease with sun sensitivity and multiple neoplasms in association with reduced DNA repair. As a reflection of the clinical consequences of deficient DNA repair, XP serves as a model for determining the effects of proficient DNA repair. To estimate the risk of developing neoplasms in XP, we abstracted reports of 726 XP patients (from 41 countries) published from 1874 to 1982. Despite limitations of a literature survey, the XP patients under age 20 years had an estimated 2000-fold increase in frequency of basal cell and squamous cell ca
