Dorsolateral prefrontal cortex-based control with an implanted brain-computer interface.

The objective of this study was to test the feasibility of using the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex as a signal source for brain-computer interface control in people with severe motor impairment. We implanted two individuals with locked-in syndrome with a chronic brain-computer interface designed to restore independent communication. The implanted system (Utrecht NeuroProsthesis) included electrode strips placed subdurally over the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. In both participants, counting backwards activated the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex consistently over the course of 47 and 22 mont

Topographic Somatosensory Imagery for Real-Time fMRI Brain-Computer Interfacing.

Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a promising non-invasive method for brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). BCIs translate brain activity into signals that allow communication with the outside world. Visual and motor imagery are often used as information-encoding strategies, but can be challenging if not grounded in recent experience in these modalities, e.g., in patients with locked-in-syndrome (LIS). In contrast, somatosensory imagery might constitute a more suitable information-encoding strategy as the somatosensory function is often very robust. Somatosensory imagery ha

Feasibility of an EEG-based brain-computer interface in the intensive care unit.

OBJECTIVE: We tested the feasibility of deploying a commercially available EEG-based brain-computer interface (BCI) in the intensive care unit (ICU) to detect consciousness in patients with acute disorders of consciousness (DoC) or locked-in syndrome (LIS). METHODS: Ten patients (9 DoC, 1 LIS) and 10 healthy subjects (HS) were enrolled. The BCI utilized oddball auditory evoked potentials, vibrotactile evoked potentials (VTP) and motor imagery (MoI) to assess consciousness. We recorded the assessment completion rate and the time required for assessment, and we calculated the sensitivity and sp

Brain-computer interface (BCI) evaluation in people with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) might restore communication to people severely disabled by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or other disorders. We sought to: 1) define a protocol for determining whether a person with ALS can use a visual P300-based BCI; 2) determine what proportion of this population can use the BCI; and 3) identify factors affecting BCI performance. Twenty-five individuals with ALS completed an evaluation protocol using a standard 6 × 6 matrix and parameters selected by stepwise linear discrimination. With an 8-channel EEG montage, the subjects fell into two groups in BCI

Brain-muscle-computer interface: mobile-phone prototype development and testing.

We report prototype development and testing of a new mobile-phone-based brain-muscle-computer interface for severely paralyzed persons, based on previous results from our group showing that humans may actively create specified power levels in two separate frequency bands of a single surface electromyography (sEMG) signal. EMG activity on the surface of a single face muscle site (auricularis superior) is recorded with a standard electrode. This analog electrical signal is imported into an Android-based mobile phone and digitized via an internal A/D converter. The digital signal is split, and th

Comparison of classification methods for P300 brain-computer interface on disabled subjects.

We report on tests with a mind typing paradigm based on a P300 brain-computer interface (BCI) on a group of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), middle cerebral artery (MCA) stroke, and subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) patients, suffering from motor and speech disabilities. We investigate the achieved typing accuracy given the individual patient's disorder, and how it correlates with the type of classifier used. We considered 7 types of classifiers, linear as well as nonlinear ones, and found that, overall, one type of linear classifier yielded a higher classification accuracy. In addition to the

An online brain-computer interface for detecting incongruity in augmented reality applications.

Objective.Augmented reality can provide digital information about physical entities presented within its real-world context. However, this information might disagree with the user's expectations due to factual errors in the data or cognitive biases. Such incongruity can impair user experience and undermine trust in the AR system. To address this issue, we propose detecting inconsistencies between physical objects and digital information through hybrid brain-computer interfaces.Approach.We conducted two complementary experiments. First, we implemented a strategy that integrates eye-tracking and

A Few-Channel Brain-Computer Interface System Based on a Heuristic Algorithm.

Traditional P300 brain-computer interface (BCI) systems rely on multi-channel EEG acquisition, causing cumbersome setup, lengthy preparation, and high user workloads, which limits their real-world application. To enhance practicality, this paper proposes a fixed few-channel selection framework based on a heuristic algorithm to balance decoding performance and user experience. We integrated a genetic algorithm (GA) with Bayesian linear discriminant analysis (BLDA) to identify a strongly generalizable few-channel combination from a traditional eight-channel system, avoiding costly subject-specif

Neurofeedback and Brain-Computer Interface-Based Methods for Post-stroke Rehabilitation.

Stroke has been identified as a major public health concern and one of the leading causes contributing to long-term neurological disability. People suffering from stroke often present with upper limb paralysis impacting their quality of life and ability to work. Motor impairments in the upper limb represent the most prevalent symptoms in stroke sufferers. There is a need to develop novel intervention strategies that can be used as stand-alone techniques or combined with current gold standard post-stroke rehabilitation procedures. There was reported evidence about the utility of rehabilitation

Research on Adaptive Discriminating Method of Brain-Computer Interface for Motor Imagination.

(1) Background: Brain-computer interface (BCI) technology represents a cutting-edge field that integrates brain intelligence with machine intelligence. Unlike BCIs that rely on external stimuli, motor imagery-based BCIs (MI-BCIs) generate usable brain signals based on an individual's imagination of specific motor actions. Due to the highly individualized nature of these signals, identifying individuals who are better suited for MI-BCI applications and improving its efficiency is critical. (2) Methods: This study collected four motor imagery tasks (left hand, right hand, foot, and tongue) from

Signal properties and stability of a chronically implanted endovascular brain computer interface.

BACKGROUND: Implanted brain-computer interfaces (iBCIs) establish direct communication with the brain and hold the potential to enable people with severe disability to achieve control of digital devices, enabling communication and digital activities of daily living. The ability to access brain signals reliably and continuously over many years post-implantation is crucial for iBCIs to be effective and feasible. This study investigates the signal characteristics and long-term stability of neural activity recorded with a stent-electrode array over 1 year post-implant. METHODS: We report on five

MXene-Based Microneedle Electrode for Brain-Computer Interface in Diverse Scenarios.

In this study, we introduce a brain-computer interface (BCI) framework incorporating MXene microneedle EEG electrodes, tailored for versatile deployment. The dry electrodes, configured as 1 mm2 microneedles, underwent meticulous processing to establish a cohesive integration with the MXene conductive material. The microneedle architecture facilitates epidermal penetration, yielding low contact impedance, enabling the recording of spontaneous EEG and induced brain activity, and ensuring high precision in steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) speller. Simultaneously, the microneedle elect

Status of deep learning for EEG-based brain-computer interface applications.

In the previous decade, breakthroughs in the central nervous system bioinformatics and computational innovation have prompted significant developments in brain-computer interface (BCI), elevating it to the forefront of applied science and research. BCI revitalization enables neurorehabilitation strategies for physically disabled patients (e.g., disabled patients and hemiplegia) and patients with brain injury (e.g., patients with stroke). Different methods have been developed for electroencephalogram (EEG)-based BCI applications. Due to the lack of a large set of EEG data, methods using matrix

Can Children With Perinatal Stroke Use a Simple Brain Computer Interface?

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Perinatal stroke is the leading cause of hemiparetic cerebral palsy resulting in lifelong disability for millions of people worldwide. Options for motor rehabilitation are limited, especially for the most severely affected children. Brain computer interfaces (BCIs) sample brain activity to allow users to control external devices. Functional electrical stimulation enhances motor recovery after stroke, and BCI-activated functional electrical stimulation was recently shown to improve upper extremity function in adult stroke. We aimed to determine the ability of children wi

Portable brain-computer interface based on novel convolutional neural network.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is a powerful, noninvasive tool that provides a high temporal resolution to directly reflect brain activities. Conventional electrodes require skin preparation and the use of conductive gels, while subjects must wear uncomfortable EEG hats. These procedures usually create a challenge for subjects. In the present study, we propose a portable EEG signal acquisition system. This study consists of two main parts: 1) A novel, portable dry-electrode and wireless brain-computer interface is designed. The EEG signal acquisition board is based on 24 bit, analog-to-digital c

Single-paradigm and hybrid brain computing interfaces and their use by disabled patients.

Brain computer interfacing (BCI) has enjoyed increasing interest not only from research communities such as engineering and neuroscience but also from visionaries that predict it will change the way we will interact with technology. Since BCIs establish an alternative communication channel between the brain and the outside world, they have been hailed to provide solutions for patients suffering from severe motor- and/or communication disabilities such as fully paralyzed locked-in syndrome patients. However, despite single-case successes, which sometimes reach a broad audience, BCIs are actuall

Estimated Prevalence of the Target Population for Brain-Computer Interface Neurotechnology in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: People who suffer from paralysis have difficulties participating in society. Particularly burdensome is the locked-in syndrome (LIS). LIS patients are not able to move and speak but are cognitively healthy. They rely on assistive technology to interact with the world and may benefit from neurotechnological advances. Optimal research and design of such aids requires a well-defined target population. However, the LIS population is poorly characterized and the number of patients in this condition is unknown. OBJECTIVE: Here we estimated and described the LIS patient population in the

A vibrotactile p300-based brain-computer interface for consciousness detection and communication.

Brain-computer interface (BCI) has been used for many years for communication in severely disabled patients. BCI based on electrophysiological signals has enabled communication, using auditory or visual stimuli to elicit event-related potentials (ERPs). The aim of this study was to determine whether patients with locked-in syndrome (LIS) could elicit a P300 wave, using a vibrotactile oddball paradigm for establishing somatosensory BCI-based communication. Six chronic LIS patients performed 2 electroencephalography (EEG)-based vibrotactile P300 oddball tasks. After a simple mental counting task
