Thirty-six BraABCB genes were identified in Brassica rapa var. parachinensis; expression and interaction analyses suggest BraABCB27 and BraABCB28 as hormone-responsive candidates associated with BRI1-related proteins. ABCB transporters are ATP-dependent membrane proteins that mediate the transport of diverse substrates, including phytohormones, and play important roles in plant development and environmental adaptation. Previous studies in Arabidopsis have shown that several ABCB proteins participate in phytohormone transport, including auxin and brassinosteroid transport, whereas the functions

The IDA/IDL (INFLORESCENCE DEFICIENT IN ABSCISSION or like) peptides are conserved core components of the plant organ abscission machinery. However, the transcriptional networks governing IDA/IDL expression and their upstream regulators remain poorly understood. We previously identified LcIDL1 as a potential key positive regulator of litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) fruitlet abscission. In the present study, yeast one-hybrid screening revealed that the LcIDL1 promoter is directly bound by the transcription factor BRASSINAZOLE RESISTANT2 (LcBZR2), an essential constituent of the brassinosteroid

Environmental stress in plants often leads to the accumulation of unfolded or misfolded proteins in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), triggering the unfolded protein response (UPR) and ER-associated degradation (ERAD) to restore protein homeostasis. In Arabidopsis, the ER stress sensor IRE1 catalyzes the unconventional splicing of bZIP60 mRNA, producing a transcription factor that regulates UPR-related genes. However, the role of IRE1 in ERAD regulation remains unclear. Here, we demonstrate that ire1a&b double mutants show delayed induction of key ERAD components, including HRD1B, EBS5/HRD3, and

The objective of this study was to increase our understanding of the hormonal regulation of de-etiolation by investigating endogenous hormone levels and response in etiolated pea ( Pisum sativum L.) seedlings after exposure to continuous white light. Recent reports suggest that de-etiolation may result from the down-regulation of an enzyme in the brassinosteroid (BR) biosynthesis pathway in pea. A subsequent review highlighted the need for direct measurements of BR levels to support this hypothesis. We have shown that endogenous castasterone and 6-deoxocastasterone levels are not greatly reduc

Plants produce a considerable number of metabolites, and many of them appear to interfere with certain cellular processes such as cell division. For example, taxanes produced by Taxus are known as anti-cancer drugs that stabilize microtubules and prevent the cell from dividing normally. Disorder of cell division also leads to abnormal growth and development in plants. It is worthy of consideration whether these metabolites have negative effects on plants per se. In this study, we developed an efficient screening system for identifying plant metabolites affecting rapeseed seedling root growth.

This study explores the impact of RNAi in terms of selectively inhibiting the expression of the OsBBTI5 gene, with the primary objective of uncovering its involvement in the molecular mechanisms associated with salt tolerance in rice. OsBBTI5, belonging to the Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBI) family gene, is known for its involvement in plant stress responses. The gene was successfully cloned from rice, exhibiting transcriptional self-activation in yeast. A yeast two-hybrid assay confirmed its specific binding to OsAPX2 (an ascorbate peroxidase gene). Transgenic OsBBTI5-RNAi plants displayed insens

Ammonium toxicity, resulting from prolonged use of ammonium as the sole nitrogen source, can lead to physiological and morphological disorders, ultimately stunting plant growth. Enhancing ammonium assimilation efficiency has been extensively explored as a strategy to mitigate ammonium toxicity. However, the role of AspAT, a key enzyme in nitrogen assimilation, remains underexplored. This study investigates the function of AspAT in alleviating ammonium toxicity and uncovers the underlying physiological mechanisms. The results show that two Populus AspAT genes, AspAT13 and AspAT15, exhibit the h

Salt stress seriously restricts crop yield and quality, leading to an urgent need to understand its effects on plants and the mechanism of plant responses. Although phytohormones are crucial for plant responses to salt stress, the role of phytohormone signal transduction in the salt stress responses of stress-resistant species such as Sophora alopecuroides has not been reported. Herein, we combined transcriptome and metabolome analyses to evaluate expression changes of key genes and metabolites associated with plant hormone signal transduction in S. alopecuroides roots under salt stress for 0

During their lifetime, plants encounter numerous biotic and abiotic stresses with diverse modes of attack. Phytohormones, including salicylic acid (SA), ethylene (ET), jasmonate (JA), abscisic acid (ABA), auxin (AUX), brassinosteroid (BR), gibberellic acid (GA), cytokinin (CK) and the recently identified strigolactones (SLs), orchestrate effective defense responses by activating defense gene expression. Genetic analysis of the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana has advanced our understanding of the function of these hormones. The SA- and ET/JA-mediated signaling pathways were thought to be the b

Plants need to precisely coordinate growth and development with stress responses under constantly changing environmental conditions, and the interaction between redox signaling and plant hormone signaling is an important regulatory mechanism underlying this balance. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are not only oxidative metabolic products generated under stress conditions, but also important second messengers that modulate protein functions through oxidative post-translational modifications (oxi-PTMs). Recent studies have shown that ROS can directly regulate plant hormone signaling transduction

SUMMARYLeveraging data from innovative experimental approaches, omics technologies, and bioinformatics, we offer new insights into how fungi communicate with and perceive their environment to achieve ecological success. By integrating comparative data from both the fungal and plant kingdoms, we critically reassessed the evolutionary, biochemical, and functional landscape of phytohormones in fungi, challenging the conventional notion that these molecules serve exclusively as plant regulators or as means of communication with them. Our analysis demonstrates that fungi not only synthesize a diver

Cold stress (CS) represents a major environmental factor that adversely affects plant growth, development, and productivity. To cope with low-temperature conditions, plants have evolved sophisticated mechanisms for CS perception and response, mediated through complex cellular signaling networks and physiological processes. Central to these adaptive responses are phytohormones, which function either independently or through synergistic and antagonistic interactions to fine-tune CS tolerance. This review synthesizes current knowledge on the roles of major classical phytohormones and signaling me

Nitric oxide (NO) is a crucial signaling molecule, playing a pivotal role in response to low-temperature (LT) stress in plants. NO mediates cold acclimation mainly via modulation of redox homeostasis, phytohormone signaling, calcium signaling, transcription factors, and other secondary messengers. This review explores the intricate dialogue between NO and various plant growth regulators. NO cross-talk with phytohormones like ethylene, abscisic acid, brassinosteroids, melatonin and salicylic acid, mitigates chilling injuries and alleviates physiological damage during LT. Secondary metabolites s

Anthocyanins play critical roles in protecting plant tissues against diverse stresses. The complicated regulatory networks induced by various environmental factors modulate the homeostatic level of anthocyanins. Here, we show that anthocyanin accumulation is induced by brassinosteroids (BRs) in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) shoots and shed light on the underlying regulatory mechanism. We observed that anthocyanin levels are altered considerably in BR-related mutants, and BRs induce anthocyanin accumulation by upregulating the expression of anthocyanin biosynthetic genes. Our genetic analy

In land plants plastid type differentiation occurs concomitantly with cellular differentiation and the transition from one type to another is under developmental and environmental control. Plastid dynamism is based on a bilateral communication between plastids and nucleus through anterograde and retrograde signaling. Signaling occurs through the interaction with specific phytohormones (abscisic acid, strigolactones, jasmonates, gibberellins, brassinosteroids, ethylene, salicylic acid, cytokinin and auxin). The review is focused on the modulation of plastid capabilities at both transcriptional

As signal molecules produced within the plant, phytohormones (plant hormones) control plant growth and development through the regulation of gene expression. They play also a crucial role in the regulation of cellular activities including elongation, cell division and differentiation, organogenesis, pattern formation, reproduction and responses to abiotic and biotic stress conditions. Cytokinins, auxins, gibberellins, abscisic acid and ethylene are five classic phytohormones that had been discovered by the middle of the twentieth century, while strigolactones, brassinosteroids, jasmonates and

Plant growth regulators (PGRs) are extensively deployed in medicinal and edible plants (MEPs) to enhance yields, yet their environmental persistence and potential ecotoxicological effects have raised significant public health concerns. However, current regulatory frameworks remain deficient in PGR-specific residue limits and cross-matrix surveillance tools. Herein, a data modeling-driven broad-spectrum analytical platform was engineered for comprehensive occurrence mapping and dietary exposure assessment of PGRs. Global optimization was achieved through simplex lattice mixture design combined

Pathogenesis-related proteins (PR), including osmotins, play a vital role in plant defense, being activated in response to diverse biotic and abiotic stresses. Despite their significance, the mechanistic insights into the role of osmotins in plant defense have not been extensively explored. The present study explores the cloning and characterization of the osmotin gene (WsOsm) from Withania somnifera, aiming to illuminate its role in plant defense mechanisms. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis revealed significant induction of WsOsm in response to various phytohormones e.g. abscisic acid, sal

The present study demonstrates that low concentrations of azelaic acid (AZA) significantly impact the metabolism of Arabidopsis thaliana seedlings, leading to imbalances in numerous minerals and metabolites due to AZA-induced stress. Untargeted metabolomic analyses were conducted on untreated and AZA-treated seedlings at two time points: 7 and 14 days after treatment initiation. The results revealed a general accumulation of sugars (e.g., glucose, mannose, xylose), amino acids (e.g., lysine, GABA, threonine, glutamine), and organic acids (e.g., glutaric acid, shikimic acid, succinic acid) in A

Background: Maize (Zea mays L.) is a vital global crop, and yield improvement through dwarfing breeding-inspired by the Green Revolution-holds promise for addressing food security challenges. Despite the identification of over 60 dwarf genes in maize, their genetic diversity remains limited. Brassinosteroids (BRs) are key phytohormones that regulate plant height, and mutations in BR-related genes often result in dwarf phenotypes. Methods: The zmbrd1 mutant was generated via EMS mutagenesis in the B73 background. Phenotypic traits (plant height, root length) and histological features (e.g., mes
