The Risk of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip in Premature Infants with Breech Presentation at Birth.

OBJECTIVE: This article evaluates the risk (defined here as incidence per 1,000 infants) of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in premature infants undergoing hip ultrasound (HUS) for breech presentation only compared with other indications. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of infants born between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2018 at <37 weeks' gestation with a HUS obtained in the first year of life, at Nationwide Children's Hospital, the only available facility for pediatric radiology and orthopaedic services in central Ohio. We calculated risk differences and odds ratios of DDH b

[Impact of a service protocol on the practice of vaginal delivery of breech presentations at term].

OBJECTIVES: The delivery of breech presentations remains controversial. Our study analysed the impact of a service protocol on the proportion of planned vaginal delivery and its success. Immediate neonatal morbidity and factors that may influence the success of vaginal delivery were studied. METHODS: Retrospective study, between 2009 and 2020 at the CHRU of Limoges, type 3 maternity hospital, on patients with a breech foetus at term. The proportion of planned vaginal delivery and the rate of effective vaginal delivery were compared before/after 2015. Neonatal morbidity was compared for planne

Influence of mode of delivery on outcomes in preterm breech infants presenting in labor.

Objective: Rates of vaginal breech delivery at term have fallen significantly. We sought to examine rates of preterm vaginal breech delivery and outcomes associated with delivery route. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was carried out at a large tertiary referral center serving an urban population, from 2001 to 2011. The primary objective was to compare outcomes of breech presenting preterm infants according to mode of delivery. The incidence of preterm breech delivery was examined as well as maternal and neonatal outcomes associated with vaginal and abdominal delivery of preterm breech

Prognosis for term breech presentations in Africa (Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso).

to describe the mode of delivery and the fetal prognosis for breech presentations in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso. this prospective, descriptive, cross-sectional study covered the entire year 2013 and included patients from the city's three principal maternity units. The sample included 184 women who gave birth at term to fetuses in breech presentation and a control group of 368 women with infants in cephalic presentation. Data were collected with standardized case report forms. The analysis was conducted with Epi-Info 3.5.1 software. We used the Chi-square test to compare percentages and the

Long-term follow-up for organic dysfunction in breech - presenting children.

BACKGROUND: The authors performed a long term outcome analysis of minimal brain damage in children delivered in breech presentation, and related the results to the mode of delivery (vaginal or by cesarean section). MATERIAL/METHODS: In the Department of Obstetrics at the Medical University of Gdansk (Poland), 917 breech deliveries took place between 1981 and 1990. Excluding stillbirths and multiple pregnancies, 874 deliveries were analyzed. We received positive responses from 232 mothers, who provided us with considerable information about the children's further development and problems that

Protocol for the evaluation of a decision aid for women with a breech-presenting baby [ISRCTN14570598].

BACKGROUND: There is now good evidence about the management options for pregnant women with a breech presentation (buttocks or feet rather than head-first) at term; external cephalic version (ECV) - the turning of a breech baby to a head-down position and/or planned caesarean section (CS). Each of these options has benefits and risks and the relative importance of these vary for each woman, subject to her personal values and preferences, a situation where a decision aid may be helpful.Decision aids are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions using information

The term breech presentation. A retrospective study with regard to the planned mode of delivery.

BACKGROUND: To analyze retrospectively a large group of term breech and vertex deliveries, with regard to the influence of the mode of delivery on the frequency of fetal and maternal complications. METHODS: All singleton breech deliveries after completed 36 weeks of pregnancy, with a live fetus, delivered at Rogaland Central Hospital, from September 1 1996 to the May 10 2001 were included (n = 575). Correspondingly as a control group, 582 cases in vertex presentation were analyzed. RESULTS: Planned vaginal delivery (VD) for the fetus in breech presentation (n = 448) in comparison with electi

Epidural analgesia, fetal monitoring and the condition of the baby at birth with breech presentation.

Between December 1970 and March 1973, 138 patients with a singleton fetus presenting by the breech after 36 weeks of pregnancy were deemed suitable for vaginal delivery under epidural analgesia; 130 were delivered vaginally, 10 of them by breech extraction. There was one stillbirth and no neonatal deaths. Epidural analgesia for vaginal breech delivery seemed beneficial. In 65 cases it was possible to compare the umbilical vein pH with the Apgar score at one minute. In 35 patients a continuous recording of the fetal heart rate was used to predict the Apgar score at one minute and the results ar

Revisiting the management of term breech presentation: a proposal for overcoming some of the controversies.

BACKGROUND: The debate surrounding the management of term breech presentation has excessively focused on the mode of delivery. Indeed, a steady decline in the rate of vaginal breech delivery has been observed over the last three decades, and the soundness of the vaginal route was seriously challenged at the beginning of the 2000s. However, associations between adverse perinatal outcomes and antenatal risk factors have been observed in foetuses that remain in the breech presentation in late gestation, confirming older data and raising the question of the role of these antenatal risk factors in

Is a breech presentation at term more frequent in women with a history of cesarean delivery?

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether breech presentation at term is more common among women with at least 1 previous cesarean delivery. STUDY DESIGN: This historic cohort study (n = 84,688) included women with a singleton term pregnancy and at least 1 previous delivery. Results were expressed as crude relative risks and adjusted odds ratios. RESULTS: While 2.46% of women had a fetus in breech presentation at term, 14.91% of women had had 1 or more previous cesareans. The relative risk of a breech presentation at term for women with a history of cesarean was 2.18 (95%

Development and pilot-testing of a decision aid for women with a breech-presenting baby.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a decision aid for pregnant women with a breech presentation at term, and to assess its acceptability. METHODS: The external cephalic version (ECV) decision aid was developed using the Ottawa Decision Support Framework and a systematic review of the evidence to provide probabilistic information about the benefits and risks of options. It incorporates a workbook supplemented by a CD and worksheet, and these were evaluated in a pilot study using self-administered questionnaires. PARTICIPANTS: 19 women with a breech presentation attending antenatal clinics at a local obste

[A case of complete amelia in a newborn infant. (Contribution on the etiology of breech presentation)].

The authors related a case of complete absence of all extremities (amelia) in a newborn delivered by the breech. The cause of the breech presentation has been attributed to the shape of the fetus and to lack a fetal movements. The reflexes of the fetus are important for establishing a normal presentation.

Spontaneous cephalic version and risk factors for persistent breech presentation: a longitudinal retrospective cohort study.

AIMS: To address the rate of spontaneous version in breech presentation until term and explore the risk factors for persistent breech presentation diagnosed by the second-trimester ultrasound examination. METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study of pregnant women with a singleton pregnancy who had their ultrasound examination conducted at the time of 22-26 weeks of gestation in the Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center. Cox regressions were applied to determine the strength of association between selected risk factors and persistent breech presentation. RESULTS: Among 25,313 pre

Inner Ear Malformations in Congenital Deafness Are Not Associated with Increased Risk of Breech Presentation.

BackgroundThere is speculation that an immature vestibular system may be associated with breech presentation at delivery. Our aim was to determine whether syndromes with congenital inner ear malformations were accompanied by a higher frequency of breech presentation/malpresentations than in the general population (2%-3%). Methods: A review was conducted for published literature using PubMed/MEDLINE (1936-2016), to determine frequency of breech presentation and transverse lie in cases with congenital deafness (Michel aplasia, Wildervanck syndrome, Mondini-Alexander dysplasia, Waardenburg syndro

Systematic review of adverse outcomes of external cephalic version and persisting breech presentation at term.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes of both external cephalic version (ECV) and persisting breech presentation at term. We conducted a systematic review of the literature using Medline, Embase and All Evidence Based Medicine (EBM) Reviews databases. Data were extracted from studies that compared women who had an ECV from 36 weeks' gestation with a similar control group of women enrolled at the same gestational age, eligible for, but who did not have an ECV. Eleven studies with a total of 2503 women were included. Adverse outcomes related
