Primary progressive aphasia (PPA) is a neurodegenerative dementia syndrome principally characterized by the gradual dissolution of language functions, especially in the early stages of disorder. In a previous functional neuroimaging study, PPA patients were found to activate core language areas similarly to control subjects when performing semantic and phonological processing tasks (Sonty et al., 2003). In the present study, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and dynamic causal modeling (DCM) were used to study multiregional effective connectivity in early-stage PPA (n = 8) and contr

OBJECTIVE: To combine MRI-based cortical morphometry and diffusion white matter tractography to describe the anatomical correlates of repetition deficits in patients with primary progressive aphasia (PPA).
METHODS: The traditional anatomical model of language identifies a network for word repetition that includes Wernicke and Broca regions directly connected via the arcuate fasciculus. Recent tractography findings of an indirect pathway between Wernicke and Broca regions suggest a critical role of the inferior parietal lobe for repetition. To test whether repetition deficits are associated wi

The Wada test is still considered the gold standard for determining the language-dominant hemisphere prior to brain surgery. The authors report on a 34-year-old right-handed woman whose Wada test results indicated that the right hemisphere was dominant for language. In contrast, functional magnetic resonance (fMR) imaging was indicative of bilaterally represented language functions. Activation in the left hemisphere demonstrated on fMR imaging was most pronounced in the Broca area. Importantly, fMR imaging results in this area were confirmed on electrocortical stimulation mapping. These contra

A critical examination of speech motor control depends on an in-depth understanding of network connectivity associated with Brodmann areas 44 and 45 and surrounding cortices. Damage to these areas has been associated with two conditions-the speech motor programming disorder apraxia of speech (AOS) and the linguistic/grammatical disorder of Broca's aphasia. Here we focus on AOS, which is most commonly associated with damage to posterior Broca's area (BA) and adjacent cortex. We provide an overview of our own studies into the nature of AOS, including behavioral and neuroimaging methods, to explo

To evaluate transcranial direct current stimulation-induced changes in resting state quantitative EEG and cognitive-verbal performance of second language learners, 16 healthy individuals were randomly recruited to sham and real transcranial direct current stimulation groups receiving eight sessions of second language instruction accompanied by a 2 mA transcranial direct current stimulation over Broca's area with the cathode placed over the left arm. Quantitative EEG was recorded during the resting state after the stimulation session and second language instruction. Reduced theta activity at Fp

Occurring at rates up to 6-7 syllables per second, speech perception and understanding involves rapid identification of speech sounds and pre-activation of morphemes and words. Using event-related potentials (ERPs) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we investigated the time-course and neural sources of pre-activation of word endings as participants heard the beginning of unfolding words. ERPs showed a pre-activation negativity (PrAN) for word beginnings (first two segmental phonemes) with few possible completions. PrAN increased gradually as the number of possible completions of

BACKGROUND: Pituitary adenoma (PA) may compress the optic apparatus, resulting in impaired vision. Some patients can experience improved vision rapidly after surgery. During the early period after surgery, however, the change in neurofunction in the extravisual cortex and higher cognitive cortex has yet to be explored.
OBJECTIVE: Our study focused on the changes in the extravisual resting-state networks in patients with PA after vision restoration.
METHODS: We recruited 14 patients with PA who experienced visual improvement after surgery. The functional connectivity (FC) of 6 seeds [auditory

PURPOSE: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a well-established, non-invasive method for pre-operative mapping of speech-eloquent areas. This investigation tests three simple paradigms to evaluate speech lateralisation and visualisation of speech-eloquent areas.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 14 healthy volunteers and 16 brain tumour patients were given three tasks: to enumerate months in the correct order (EM), to generate verbs fitting to a given noun (GV) and to generate words fitting to a given alphabetic character (GW). We used a blocked design with 80 measurements which consisted of

BACKGROUND: This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) as an individualized tool for localizing core language areas in patients undergoing epilepsy surgery.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 31 patients with drug-resistant epilepsy who underwent rs-fMRI-based language localization and stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG). The rs-fMRI data were processed using seed-based correlation analysis. Two neurosurgeons independently reviewed the data and reached a consensus on the rs-fMRI localization r

A case is reported of severe agnosia for verbal and nonverbal sounds in a setting of well-preserved intelligence and transient dysphasic symptoms. The lesions responsible for this disorder were bilateral cerebral infarcts, one of which had virtually destroyed the areas of Wernicke and Broca. The relation between lesions and disabilities is discussed and comparisons made with other published cases.

A 69-year-old left-handed man developed Broca aphasia and jargon agraphia following a right cerebral infarction. He learned to write with his right hand. There is no family history of left-handedness. Neurological examination revealed hemiparesis, sensory impairment, and hyperreflexia with pathological reflexes on the left side. An MRI demonstrated lesions in the area including the pre- and post-central gyri, the posterior part of the middle and inferior frontal gyri, and inferior parietal lobule on the right side. Neuropsychologically he was alert and cooperative. He demonstrated severe Broca

Five patients with left-sided visual neglect following focal infarction of the right frontal lobe are presented. Lesion location was assessed using computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging. The common area of lesion overlap was small, being confined to the dorsal aspect of the inferior frontal gyrus (Brodmann's area 44) and the immediate underlying white matter. This cortical region is part of the homologue of Broca's area in the right hemisphere and is considered to be part of human premotor cortex. The association of neglect with injury to this area suggests it may play an important

The Persian language can be considered to have a relatively more complex and combinatorial morpho-syntax than languages like Chinese and English. For example, the Persian verbal system is largely constituted of light verb constructions, in which light verbs are combined with specific items coming from other grammatical classes to generate entirely new verbal entities. This study was designed to examine the mediating effect of language-inherent properties related to morpho-syntax on activation of the left inferior frontal gyrus (LIFG), a brain area involved in morpho-syntactic processing. To th

BACKGROUND: Mostly, visual food stimuli paradigms for functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging are used in studies of eating disorders. However, the optimal contrasts and presentation modes are still under discussion. Therefore, we aimed to create and analyse a visual stimulation paradigm with defined contrast.
METHODS: In this prospective study, a block-design fMRI paradigm with conditions of randomly altering blocks of high- and low-calorie food images and images of fixation cross was established. Food pictures were rated in advance by a group of patients diagnosed with anorexia nervosa to add

We analyzed the specific brain activity, measured by fMRI in spatial and verbal tasks, in 15 healthy sub- jects and in 9 patients with dysarthria or mild sensorimotor aphasia. In healthy participants, verbal thinking was characterized by activation in Brodmann area 19 and Broca area while specific activation for spatial thinking was observed in bilateral temporal-occipital-parietal areas, left insula, left visual fields 17 and 18. In patients with impaired speech, this distribution of networks specific to a particular type of task underwent significant changes with deactivation of the brain ar

Microscopic neuroanatomy of limbic system and basal forebrain on MRI is complex and is a terra incognita for many radiologists, clinicians, and neuroscientists. Interestingly, most of the important structures/at least anatomical regions containing these structures demonstrable on cadaveric and surgical dissections can be identified on clinical MRI, with 3T being much better than 1.5T. This article teaches the practical MRI identification of these structures which will greatly help in evaluating complex ailments like temporal lobe epilepsy, Alzheimer dementia, and other neuropsychiatric disorde

Dyslexia, or reading difficulty, is characterized by slow, inaccurate reading accompanied by executive dysfunction. Reading training using the Reading Acceleration Program improves reading and executive functions in both children with dyslexia and typical readers. This improvement is associated with increased activation in and functional connectivity between the anterior cingulate cortex, part of the cingulo-opercular cognitive-control network, and the fusiform gyrus during a reading task after training. The objective of the current study was to determine whether the training also has an effec

Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are frequently evaluated before therapeutic embolization by superselective injection of anesthetics into individual arterial branches so as to determine whether permanent occlusion would affect eloquent function. In Experiment 1, we used this adaptation of the Wada procedure to study three right-handed adult patients with left frontal cerebral AVMs by injecting vessels in Wernicke's and Broca's areas, respectively, and assessing language functions. The results showed that superselective testing in the inferior division of the left MCA in all three pa

The literature suggests that that semantic and phonological fluency tasks selectively activate left Brodmann's area (BA) 45 and 44, respectively, in Broca's speech region. We used functional MRI to test this hypothesis. Subjects performed a semantic and a phonological fluency task. In addition, a syntactic fluency task (e.g. "Generate nouns with masculine gender") was included. Resting blocks were included as a low-level control condition. The exact localisation of the effects was tested with cytoarchitectonic probability maps of BA 44 and BA 45. Participants generated fewer words in the synta

In the guinea pig brain, LH-RH-containing cell bodies are located not only within the classical hypophysiotrophic area but also in the medial preoptic area, septum and olfactory tubercle. LH-RH fiber tracts project not only to the primary portal plexus in the median eminence but also throughout the limbic forebrain and limbic midbrain regions. Using radiofrequency lesions in different brain regions, the projections of LH-RH cell bodies were determined. Cells in the medial preoptic area project ot the organum vasculosum of the lamina terminalis (OVLT), the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the mammillar
