Influenza alone and in sequence with pneumonia due to Streptococcus pneumoniae in the squirrel monkey.

Squirrel monkeys (Saimiri sciureus) inoculated intratracheally with 10(4.2)-10(8.2) egg median infectious doses (EID50) of type A influenza virus (H3N2) responded with clinical illness including such signs as fever, sneezing or coughing, coryza, and increased respiratory rates. Necropsy studies performed six days after inoculation revealed bronchopneumonia in addition to a mild tracheitis. Squirrel monkeys given 10(5)-6 x 10(8) colony-forming units (cfu) of Streptococcus pneumoniae intratracheally died four to six days later after developing severe illness characterized by fever, bacteremia, l

Retrospective study of pneumonia in non-racing horses in California.

Pneumonia is a significant disease of horses. Although pneumonia has traditionally been studied in racehorses, little information is available for non-racing horses. Non-racing horses that died with pulmonary lesions (n = 156) were available from cases submitted for autopsy from January 2015 to June 2020. Bronchopneumonia (35%), interstitial pneumonia (29%), embolic pneumonia (21%), granulomatous pneumonia (13%), and pleuritis (2%) were observed in the examined horses. Seventy-four horses died or were euthanized because of pulmonary diseases, and 82 horses died or were euthanized because of no

Interstitial pneumonia in feedlot cattle: concurrent lesions and lack of immunohistochemical evidence for bovine respiratory syncytial virus infection.

The objectives of this study were to describe the nature and distribution of microscopic lung lesions in feedlot cattle with interstitial pneumonia and to determine whether bovine respiratory syncytial virus (BRSV) antigen was present in affected lungs. Lungs with macroscopic lesions compatible with interstitial pneumonia were collected from cattle from 5 west-central Saskatchewan feedlots that had been on feed for greater than 60 days at the time of death. Interstitial pneumonia was most consistently present in dorsal portions of caudal lung lobes and in 21/28 cases (75%) had a multifocal to

Childhood infections in Nigeria: an autopsy study.

Infections are the leading cause of childhood morbidity and mortality in developing countries. Bronchopneumonia, meningitis and gastroenteritis are the commonest fatal infections encountered in Ibadan. Tuberculous lymphadenitis, bronchopneumonia and meningitis are other frequent causes of death. The predominant sequela of measles is respiratory tract infection. Another important cause of childhood mortality is cerebral malaria. In half of the cases of tetanus no obvious portal of entry can be found. It is advocated that the implementation of immunization schedules should be vigorously pursued

Laboratory investigation of cases of fatal bacterial pneumonia in dairy cows.

OBJECTIVE: Bacterial bronchopneumonia occurs in mature dairy cows but much of the information is extrapolated from knowledge of the disease in calves. The study was prompted by perceptions of an increasing occurrence and a paucity of information on fatal Mannheimia haemolytica pneumonia in dairy cows in Ontario. The study objectives were to describe the seasonality, main pathogens involved, and suggested predisposing factors for cases of fatal bacterial bronchopneumonia in mature dairy cows submitted for postmortem examination to a diagnostic laboratory, and to evaluate if the frequency of suc

Demographic, etiological, and histological pulmonary analysis of patients with acute respiratory failure: a study of 19 years of autopsies.

INTRODUCTION: Acute respiratory failure has been one of the most important causes of death in intensive care units, and certain aspects of its pulmonary pathology are currently unknown. OBJECTIVES: The objective was to describe the demographic data, etiology, and pulmonary histopathological findings of different diseases in the autopsies of patients with acute respiratory failure. METHOD: Autopsies of 4,710 patients with acute respiratory failure from 1990 to 2008 were reviewed, and the following data were obtained: age, sex, and major associated diseases. The pulmonary histopathology was ca

[Intravenous immunoglobulin (GB-0998) for prophylaxis of recurrent acute otitis media and lower respiratory tract infection in infancy with IgG 2 deficiency].

The prophylactic effect of intravenous immunoglobulin (GB-0998) on the recurrent acute otitis media, bronchitis and bronchopneumonia in IgG 2 deficient infants was investigated in a multicenter trial. GB-0998 was administered 6 times every 4 weeks. The doses were 300 mg/kg wt. during the first treatment, followed by 5 doses of 200 mg/kg wt. The results indicated that GB-0998 was effective in the prophylaxis of the recurrent infection of acute otitis media, bronchitis and bronchopneumonia in infancy with IgG 2 deficiency and/or IgG 2 antibody deficiency specific for Streptococcus pneumoniae.

[Diagnosis and monitoring of postoperative pulmonary complications].

There is no distinct difference between regular postoperative pulmonary changes and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPC). Beside the "classic" PPC, atelectases and bronchopneumonia, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and barotraumas are becoming of increasing importance. A single examination allows the diagnosis of up to 60% of PPC. Only in 63% of cases of bronchopneumonia does the X-ray diagnosis agree with the necropsy results. The varieties of germs found in bronchial secretions and lung parenchyma, however, are not considerably different. CAT scan seems to be the best diagno

Pathology of Bolivian Hemorrhagic fever in the African green monkey.

Gross and microscopic pathological findings are presented for an African green monkey model of fatal Bolivian hemorrhagic fever. Six animals were inoculated with 1,000 plaque-forming units of Machupo virus, the etiological agent of Bolivian hemorrhagic fever. Five of the monkeys died within 13 days with signs of fever, anorexia, shock, and hemorrhage. The sixth monkey survived until the 24th day and died with signs of central nervous system disease. Gross lesions in the five monkeys that die in the acute stage included hepatic necrosis, necrotic enteritis, bronchopneumonia, and hemorrhages in

Primary ciliary dyskinesia in Newfoundland dogs.

Primary ciliary dyskinesia was diagnosed in three Newfoundland dogs with histories of chronic rhinitis and bronchopneumonia from an early age. Thoracic radiographs of two of them showed severe, dependent bronchopneumonia and right displacement of the cardiac apex but normal positioning of other organs. Histopathological examination of sections of lung from the other dog showed severe bronchopneumonia. A semen sample from one dog had a high percentage of spermatozoa with abnormal tails and poor progressive motility. Transmission electron microscopy of nasal brushings from all three dogs showed

Respiratory syncytial virus--associated lower respiratory diseases in hospitalised pre-school children in Ibadan.

An analysis of the features of lower respiratory diseases (LRD) associated with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) in 21 children aged 1-23 months, indicated that the clinical features did not differ appreciably from those described for LRD due to other infective agents. It was however, remarkable that none of the children was grossly malnourished, neither was there any death. The final respiratory diagnoses were bronchiolitis alone (6 cases), bronchopneumonia (6 cases), empyema/pleural effusion (3 cases, including one with bronchopneumonia), lobar pneumonia (3 cases, including one with associa

Pathological and molecular evidence for the role of Pasteurella multocida in respiratory disease of lambs.

Pasteurella multocida is an opportunistic pathogen associated with respiratory disease in sheep, although its relevance has not yet been fully defined. The objective of the present study was to investigate the association between P. multocida and pulmonary lesions through an integrated pathological and molecular approach. A comparative cross-sectional study was conducted in southern Spain using 201 lung samples collected from apparently healthy fattening lambs (50-60 days old) during winter and summer. This study aimed to molecularly characterize pulmonary lesions in fattening lambs and assess

Risk factors for mortality due to shigellosis: a case-control study among severely-malnourished children in Bangladesh.

To determine the risk factors for death of severely-malnourished Bangladeshi children with shigellosis, a case-control study was conducted at the Clinical Research and Service Centre of ICDDR,B: Centre for Health and Population Research in Dhaka, Bangladesh. One hundred severely-malnourished children (weight-for-age <60% of median of the National Center for Health Statistics), with a positive stool culture for Shigella dysenteriae type 1 or S. flexneri, who died during hospitalization, were compared with another 100 similar children (weight-for-age <60% and with S. dysenteriae type 1 or S. fle

Production of granulomas in Mycoplasma bovis infection associated with meningitis-meningoencephalitis, endocarditis, and pneumonia in cattle.

Mycoplasma bovis, the most important primary pathogen in the family Mycoplasmataceae, causes pneumonia, arthritis, otitis media, and mastitis in cattle. Histopathologic pulmonary changes associated with M. bovis infection have been characterized as suppurative-to-caseonecrotic bronchopneumonia; infection in other organs has been reported in only a few studies that examined caseonecrotic endocarditis and suppurative meningitis. Granulomatous lesions associated with M. bovis infection have been reported only rarely. We studied the granulomatous inflammation associated with M. bovis infection in

Endogenous lipoid pneumonia in a cachectic patient after brain injury.

Endogenous lipoid pneumonia (EnLP) is an uncommon non-life-threatening inflammatory lung disease that usually occurs in patients with conditions such as lung cancers, primary sclerosing cholangitis, and undifferentiated connective tissue disease. Here we report a case of EnLP in a paralytic and cachectic patient with bronchopneumonia after brain injury. A 40-year-old man experienced a severe brain injury in an automobile accident. He was treated for 1 month and his status plateaued. However, he became paralyzed and developed cachexia and ultimately died 145 days after the accident. Macroscopic

Pathological findings in harbour seals (Phoca vitulina): 1996-2005.

Between 1996 and 2005 the carcasses of 355 harbour seals originating from the coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, were investigated for pathological changes. The animals were collected before (n=280) and after (n=75) the second phocine distemper virus (PDV) epizootic in 2002. The seals were either found dead or were killed due to severe illness. Necropsy was performed in each case, in addition to histopathological, immunohistochemical, microbiological and parasitological examinations. Throughout the period of study, the respiratory and alimentary tracts were the organ systems most consistent

The relationship of schizophrenic births to 16 infectious diseases.

BACKGROUND: Recently, several investigators have reported an association between influenza epidemics and increased birth rates of 'preschizophrenic' individuals some four to six months later. Here we examine whether maternal exposure to other infectious diseases can also predispose the foetus to later schizophrenia. METHOD: Two independent sets of dates of birth of first admission schizophrenic patients, born between 1938 and 1965 in England and Wales, were obtained from the Mental Health Enquiry in England and Wales. Data on the number of deaths per month from 16 infectious diseases between

Fallot's tetralogy in a European beaver (Castor fiber).

A 20-mo-old, female, 9-kg European beaver (Castor fiber) presented with apathy, reduced appetite of 3-day duration and a grade 5/6 systolic heart murmur. Thoracic radiographs revealed a diffuse broncho-interstitial pattern suspicious for bronchopneumonia. The echocardiographic findings of a hypertrophied right ventricle, ventricular septal defect with overriding aorta, and infundibular pulmonic stenosis were consistent with Fallot's tetralogy. Even though the bronchopneumonia rather than the congenital cardiac defect was considered of primary importance for the presenting clinical signs, the l
