TRAPS is a very rare disease with an estimated prevalence of about one per million. We present a 53-year-old patient from Bulgaria. The clinical features of the disease are periodic fever, arthralgia, myalgia, rash, abdominal pain and hepatosplenomegaly. Laboratory studies yield leukocytosis, highly elevated levels of CRP, significantly high ESR. Secondary amyloidosis AA is determined. The genetic analysis found a heterozygous T>C nucleotide substance (c.250T>C) in exon 3 of TNFRSF1A gene which is associated with ТRAPS (MIM*191190). The presented case of genetic changes and clinical manifestat

A total of 455 confirmed and reported to the Bulgarian Ministry of Health leptospirosis cases between 1989 and 2001 were analysed. Overall incidence of the disease was 0.42/100.000 population (range 0.20-0.64/100.000). The overall fatality rate was 6.6%. Infection was acquired through occupational (30.3%), recreational (45.1%), and accidental (4.6%) exposure or was home contracted (5.1%). A tendency towards the main mode of transmission moving from occupational to recreational exposure was noted. Fishing and livestock farming together accounted for more than half of all leptospirosis cases. Le

A mumps vaccine, using strain Sofia 6 prepared in guinea-pig kidney primary cell cultures, was gradually introduced in Bulgaria to vaccinate 1- to 12-year-old children between 1972 and 1976. It was included in the national vaccine programme in 1977. The vaccine showed a slight reactogenicity, a good immunogenicity and a high epidemiological efficacy. Due to the increased morbidity of mumps, revaccination was carried out in 4- to 12-year-old children in 1982. A high level of side-effects, mainly meningitis, was registered, and led to suspension of the mumps vaccine in Bulgaria.

Medical abortion by definition is termination of pregnancy by means of administration of abortifacient pharmaceutical drugs. The most widely spread abortifacients are Mifepriston and Misoprostol. This is the gold standard for induced abortion worldwide, for first trimester, as well as for second. In Bulgaria Mifepriston is available as of June 2014. We represent here our first experience in administering Mifepriston for induced abortion in second trimester. We share our first impressions and discuss the results.

Two new dimeric anthraquinone derivatives, bulgareone A(1) and bulgareone B(2), were isolated from the fruit bodies of Bulgaria inquinans. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of extensive spectroscopic analysis. The in vitro cytotoxic activity of compounds 1 and 2 was assayed. They displayed inhibitive activities against human cancer cell lines HL60 and K562.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment adherence is crucial for managing chronic diseases, including plaque psoriasis. In Bulgaria, patients with plaque psoriasis can receive treatment with reimbursed biologics, such as guselkumab, if they meet National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) requirements. These requirements include stringent disease criteria and a complex administrative process. The objective of this analysis is to assess the proportion of patients adhering to the guselkumab administration schedule, as specified in the summary of product characteristics (SmPC), after the first continuation of the NHIF

The specificity of the life cycle of T. gondii, the causative agent of toxoplasmosis, determines its relevance in some patient groups; especially in women of childbearing age. The objective of this study was to ascertain the prevalence of this parasitic infection in Bulgaria between 2014 and 2023, focusing on pregnant women and those applying for an in vitro procedure or after an abortion. During the period, 115,053 individuals were tested for toxoplasmosis in the country, with an average seropositivity rate of 16.96%. At the NRL for the Diagnosis of Parasitic Diseases, ELISA tests were utiliz

BACKGROUND: In the autumn of 2024, an outbreak of Maedi-visna (MV) was identified in Bulgaria in the village of Sigmen, Burgas district. The disease is a slowly progressive, persistent, usually subclinical viral infection in sheep, distributed worldwide. Difficulties in early diagnosis are the long period between infection and the dynamics of the antibody titer (seroconversion), the emission of an infectious onset without clinical signs, the lack of vaccines, as well as some ongoing misunderstandings in the epidemiology and the transmission mechanisms, which determine the complex nature of the

In 2018, an increase in echovirus 30 (E30) detections was reported in some European countries. To assess the circulation and phylogenetic relationships of E30 in Bulgaria, E30 samples identified at the National Reference Laboratory for Enteroviruses, National Centre of Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, Bulgaria (NRL for Enteroviruses) in 2017 and 2018 were subjected to sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. The present study revealed that sample positivity did not significantly increase in Bulgaria during the European upsurge. E30 was identified in six patients, two of whom were epidemiologica

Malaria is an infectious disease caused by several types of parasitic plasmodia and transmitted to humans through Anopheles mosquitoes. The disease has long been widespread and has caused a significant number of deaths and decreased life quality from sequelae worldwide. As understanding of the disease increased immensely at the beginning of the 20th century, eradication plans were implemented to decrease disease transmission. This led to the successful eradication of malaria across predominantly industrialized countries, with multiple geographic areas remaining malaria endemic zones to this da

The article presents brief descriptive review of manpower resources in health care of Greece, Spain and Bulgaria. It is noted that countries differ in redundancy of specialists at relative deficiency of general practitioners. The medical personnel of analyzed countries are characterized by aging, tendency to migration to other countries, deficiency of paramedical personnel and excess of required number of dentists that is especially pronounced in Bulgaria. Furthermore, accessibility of medical care is reduced by limits of number of patients per one physician established for specified time peri

BACKGROUND: Rare diseases (RDs) are life-threatening or chronically debilitating and offer a high level of complexity. The aim of this study is to assess medical students' knowledge and awareness of RDs as well as their perceptions of potential measures to boost training in RDs. The cross-sectional survey was conducted at the Medical University of Plovdiv, Bulgaria, in 2019. The questionnaire contained 12 questions, divided into three main categories: (1) sociodemographic profile; (2) knowledge and awareness of RDs; and (3) attitudes about potential measures to improve training in RDs.

This article outlines pathomorphologic findings of a study involving commercial mule ducks with confirmed influenza A H5N8 infections after a series of outbreaks in Bulgaria. Examinations were carried out after performing necropsy on dead birds from three different age groups (up to 15, 20 to 30, and 40+ days of age) fattened on different farms. Among birds of all ages, gross lesions were present as lesions affecting the heart. Histologically, the myocardium exhibited severe intermyofibrillar edema, moderate to massive hemorrhages, and degenerative changes. All lesions resulted in single or mu

Increased HIV transmission in persons who inject drugs (PWIDs) has led to subepidemics and outbreaks in several countries in Europe, including Bulgaria. In this study in Bulgaria, we investigate the origin and spatiotemporal evolutionary history of HIV-1 infections in PWIDs and the distribution of antiretroviral resistance mutations and hepatitis co-infections in these populations. We analyzed HIV-1 polymerase sequences available from 117 of 359 PWIDs diagnosed with HIV/AIDS from 1999 to 2011. Of these, 50 (42.7%) were classified as CRF02_AG, 41 (35.0%) CRF01_AE, 12 (10.3%) URFs, ten (8.5%) su

PURPOSE: Visceral leishmaniasis (VL), caused by the parasite Leishmania infantum, which was once largely confined to Southern Europe is now being diagnosed throughout Northern Europe, including Great Britain. In an effort to help EU clinicians improve their diagnosis and management of VL, this paper defines clinical features typical of the disease as it presents in Bulgaria, where VL is endemic.
METHODS: The list of clinical symptoms presented here was gleaned from the medical records (patient histories, epidemiological survey cards, laboratory data) of 59 Bulgarian patients with VL. This stu
