[Simultaneous association of tubercular meningitis and cryptococcal meningitis in an African with human immunodeficiency virus HIV positive serology. University Hospital Center of Bujumbura,Burundi].

The authors report a connection between a meningitis tuberculosis and a meningoencephalitis with cryptococcus in the case of an african VIH+. The diagnostic of a meningitis tuberculosis was retained on an indirect arguments, this of meningoencephalitis of direct arguments (antigen cryptococcus, cultivation on Sabouraud environment). The pulmonary tuberculosis and/or extrapulmonary tuberculosis is current in Central Africa during HIV infection, as well as the crytococcosis during AIDS. But, any observation on neuromeningitis strike of those two infections have been reported up to now.

Heterogeneous effects of socio-economic and cultural factors on fertility differentials in Burundi and Morocco during their fertility transition periods: a retrospective, cross-sectional and comparative study.

INTRODUCTION: few studies have examined the factors influencing fertility differentials and the variation in their effects in countries with different socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds and different fertility transition paces. To address this gap, our study sought to first identify the factors that influenced fertility differentials in Morocco and Burundi during their fertility transition periods, and then to compare the effects of these factors between the two countries. METHODS: using data from the 2003-4 Morocco and 2010 Burundi Demographic and Health Surveys, bivariable and multivari

Effect of mass treatments with ivermectin, with only partial compliance, on prevalence and intensity of O. volvulus infection in adults and in untreated 4 and 5 year-old children in Burundi.

Between 1991 and 1994, 4 annual treatments with ivermectin were offered to the population of an area hyperendemic for onchocerciasis in the province of Bururi (Burundi). In one place, Kinama, the annual coverage ranged between 40 and 49% of the population. Of 151 persons who were examined there in 1987 and again in 1994, 4 months after the last treatment round, 43 took ivermectin all 4 times, 34 took it 3 times, 35 twice and 17 only once. Although the compliance in this population was incomplete and far from regular, the prevalence of infection in a sample of untreated 4 and 5 year-old childre

Can direct smear results that are routinely collected at health centre level be used for monitoring the impact of mass drug administration with praziquantel on schistosomiasis in Burundi? A preliminary assessment.

BACKGROUND: Intestinal schistosomiasis is still a public health problem in Burundi. Since 2008, annual mass drug administration with praziquantel has been rolled out in 11 endemic districts. The national programme relies on school-based surveys with kato-katz to monitor the impact of mass drug administration. We explored whether routine data on intestinal schistosomiasis as determined by direct fecal smears at health centre level could be used. METHODS: From the Burundian National Health Information System, we collected routine incidence data on intestinal schistosomiasis as determined by dir

Tubaramure, a Food-Assisted Integrated Health and Nutrition Program in Burundi, Increases Maternal and Child Hemoglobin Concentrations and Reduces Anemia: A Theory-Based Cluster-Randomized Controlled Intervention Trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite their popularity, food-assisted maternal and child health and nutrition (MCHN) programs have not been evaluated rigorously, and evidence of their impacts on maternal and child outcomes is scant. OBJECTIVE: This study estimated the impact of Tubaramure, a food-assisted MCHN program implemented by Catholic Relief Services and partners in eastern Burundi, on hemoglobin and anemia (primary outcome) in children aged 0-23.9 mo and their mothers and explored the impact pathways. The program targeted women and their children during their first 1000 d of life and included 1) food r

Exploring the determinants of sexual and reproductive health knowledge and intentions for safer sexual practice among out-of-school adolescents in northern rural settings in Burundi: a cross-sectional population-based study.

INTRODUCTION: Comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) knowledge is critical for reducing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among adolescents in low-resource settings. We assessed SRHR knowledge gaps among rural, out-of-school adolescents in Burundi and examined associations with intentions for safer practices (eg, condom use). METHODS: We purposively sampled and surveyed 767 out-of-school adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years from the rural settings of Ngozi health district in northern Burundi examining their SRHR knowledge and practic

Meningitis outbreaks and vaccination strategy.

Three outbreaks of meningitis caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroup A (subgroup III) are described: Niger (1991), Burundi (1992), and Guinea (1993). These outbreaks showed unusual characteristics: a shorter inter-epidemic interval (Niger), unusual geographical location outside the meningitis belt (Burundi and Guinea), and high age-specific attack rates in all age groups (Burundi and Guinea). Mass immunization campaigns mobilized considerable human and financial means (US $322,000 and 3000 person-days of work for health personnel to immunize 629,000 people in Guinea). The vaccination cover

Characterization of mpox transmission in the household, the role of children, the impact on pregnancy, and the association with lactation: a study protocol.

To address key knowledge gaps regarding mpox transmission and its effects on vulnerable populations, UNICEF commissioned an operational research study within the framework of the mpox outbreak response in Burundi. Through enhanced surveillance, this study, to be implemented by the Burundi National Institute of Public Health, will estimate mpox´s household transmission characteristics, including secondary attack rates and essential transmission parameters. The study will also evaluate the burden of mpox among children, its impact on pregnancy and pregnancy outcomes, and its association with bre

The East African Community (EAC) mobile laboratory networks in Kenya, Burundi, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, and South Sudan-from project implementation to outbreak response against Dengue, Ebola, COVID-19, and epidemic-prone diseases.

BACKGROUND: East Africa is home to 170 million people and prone to frequent outbreaks of viral haemorrhagic fevers and various bacterial diseases. A major challenge is that epidemics mostly happen in remote areas, where infrastructure for Biosecurity Level (BSL) 3/4 laboratory capacity is not available. As samples have to be transported from the outbreak area to the National Public Health Laboratories (NPHL) in the capitals or even flown to international reference centres, diagnosis is significantly delayed and epidemics emerge. Detection of circulating anodic antigen by ELISA for seroepidemiology of schistosomiasis mansoni.

Sera of individuals from Burundi excreting eggs of Schistosoma mansoni (prevalence 35%; 178 subjects) and of similar individuals from Maniema, Zaire (prevalence 95%; 99 subjects), and of 159 Dutch and 81 Zairean non-infected controls, were screened by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the presence of schistosome circulating anodic antigen (CAA). No false positive results were obtained. The sensitivity of the test was 75% in Burundi and 93% in Zaire, a significant difference (P less than 0.05). However, in matched egg output classes the test results did not differ significantly; 60% and 67%

[Epidemic typhus in Africa].

Epidemic typhus is caused by a small strictly intracellular virus named Rickettsia prowazekii, a member of the Rickettsial family. It is transmitted to man by the body louse, Pediculus humanus. Although now rare in Western countries, exanthematic typhus remains common in the Southern hemisphere due to poverty, inadequate clothing hygiene, and poor socioeconomic conditions. In Africa, outbreaks have historically occurred in Burundi, Rwanda, southwest Ouganda, and Ethiopia. The largest outbreak of epidemic typhus since the World War II was reported in Burundi where ongoing civil war since Octobe

Status of polio eradication in the seven countries of the Eastern Africa Epidemiological Block.

The progress that Burundi, Eritrea, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, the seven countries of the Eastern Africa Epidemiological Block (EAEB), have made toward polio eradication is summarized. Despite low per capita gross national product, poor infrastructure (especially for communication and transportation), and civil unrest, the EAEB has made significant progress toward polio eradication. Five of the seven countries have achieved high levels of routine coverage with at least three doses of oral polio vaccine. Virologic surveillance is established in Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Ke
