Inlay butterfly cartilage tympanoplasty (Eavey technique) modified for adults.

INTRODUCTION: Popular myringoplasty techniques include either an underlay or an onlay approach using tissues such as temporalis fascia or perichondrium as grafts. In 1998, Eavey described an inlay tympanoplasty technique in children using a cartilage graft which resembled butterfly wings. This technique was effective for closure of tympanic membrane perforations, while being more rapid for the surgeon and more comfortable for the patient. The aim of this study was to describe our results with modification of this technique in adults under local anesthesia. METHODS AND MATERIAL: Cartilage butt

Sensory receptor expansion and neural accommodation in butterfly color vision.

The evolution of complex brains required the incorporation of newly evolved neurons into existing circuits, yet the genetic and developmental mechanisms enabling their integration remain poorly understood. Butterflies expanded their color vision by adding a second R7 photoreceptor per ommatidium, a rare departure from the conserved insect eye ground plan. Because each R7 makes an independent stochastic fate choice, this duplication increased the number of ommatidial types from two to three. We identified the genetic basis of this expansion and demonstrated how the brain accommodates the new in

Seasonal Variation of Butterfly Diversity in Subtropical Urban Forests of Nepal.

Butterflies exhibit seasonal dynamics in diversity and population in response to bioclimatic factors. However, their seasonal diversity remains poorly understood in urban landscapes. Therefore, we examined how butterfly diversity varies across seasons in the urban forests of Pokhara City, located in Nepal's subtropical region. We selected three urban forests-Banpale, Bhadrakali, and Shanti Ban Batika-to sample butterflies. We employed the Pollard Walk Survey method to collect data across all four seasons and analyzed various diversity indices, community composition, and indicator species. We a

Cardenolide toxin diversity impacts monarch butterfly growth and sequestration.

In coevolutionary interactions, host plants accrue novel chemical defenses that specialist herbivores counter by detoxification and sometimes sequestration. We recently found unusual nitrogen- and sulfur-containing (N,S-) cardenolides in some milkweeds-highly toxic compounds that monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus) detoxify during sequestration. We hypothesized that the N,S-cardenolides in Asclepias curassavica (uscharin and voruscharin) would reduce caterpillar performance and sequestration more than other abundant related cardenolides (15-hydroxy-calotropin, frugoside, calactin). Cardenol

Butterfly Glioma of the Corpus Callosum Mimicking Rapidly Progressive Dementia.

A butterfly-pattern, high-grade glioma involving the corpus callosum is an uncommon but highly aggressive brain tumour that may present with neuropsychiatric manifestations and mimic rapidly progressive dementia, leading to diagnostic delay. Disruption of frontal-callosal connectivity may produce behavioural and cognitive abnormalities resembling behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), resulting in initial misdiagnosis. A 65-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with a two-week history of vomiting, progressive disorientation, generalized weakness, irrelevant speech, cognit

The temporomandibular joint disc: A complex fable about an elusive butterfly.

INTRODUCTION: Discussions related to the diagnosis and management of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders (TMDs) have always been interesting, and at times controversial, since they involve combinations of dental, medical, and surgical etiological theories and management strategies. Amongst the various recommendations that emerged over the years was that any dental and surgical procedures that are primarily focused on mandible repositioning and irreversible changes to dental occlusion should be avoided. This statement has important implications for appraising the validity of physiopathology

A tool to assist rheumatologists to engage their lupus patients: the Purple Butterfly.

OBJECTIVE: Translating the highly technical medical jargon of SLE into understandable concepts for patients, their families and individuals without expertise in SLE is a serious challenge. To facilitate communication and enable self-management in SLE, we aimed to create an innovative visual tool, the Purple Butterfly. METHODS: We selected clinically representative criteria for SLE and transposed them as graphical features in an attractive and meaningful visual. We developed a script in R programming language that automatically transposes clinical data into this visualization. We asked SLE pat

A case study on the pitfalls in prenatal ultrasonic detection of butterfly vertebra.

INTRODUCTION: Butterfly vertebra is a rare congenital anomaly that is observed both in isolation and also as part of syndromic diseases. In prenatal ultrasonic scans the typical shapes of the two halves for butterfly vertebra are wedge-shaped or triangular. In the case we presented, the 3 dimensional computed tomography (3D CT) showed that the shape was unusual and rare. To improve the prenatal ultrasonic discriminability of this rare form of butterfly vertebra we used multi-directional ultrasonic images, corresponding to postpartum 3D CT images. CASE REPORT: A 25-year-old woman was referred

Reprotoxic effects of the systemic insecticide fipronil on the butterfly Pieris brassicae.

In addition to controlling pest organisms, the systemic neurotoxic pesticide fipronil can also have adverse effects on beneficial insects and other non-target organisms. Here, we report on the sublethal effects of fipronil on the farmland butterfly Pieris brassicae. Caterpillars were reared on plants that had been grown from seeds coated with fipronil or on leaf discs topically treated with a range of fipronil dosages (1-32 µg kg-1 on dry mass basis). Females that had developed on fipronil plants laid ca half the number of eggs than females that had developed on control plants. In the bioassay

Solvent Effect on the Photoinduced Structural Change of a Phosphorescent Molecular Butterfly.

Photoinduced structural changes (PSC) is one of the fundamental excited-state dynamic processes, and yet often very challenging to distinguish from competing electronic excited-state relaxation channels having similar or even comparable timescales. Here, we report a detailed study on the PSC of a pyrazolate bridged platinum(II) binuclear complex, BFPtPZ (C^NPt(μ-pz')2 PtC^N, C^N=2-(2,4-difluorophenyl)pyridine, pz'=pyrazolate), a molecular butterfly, using time-correlated single photon counting measurements at different wavelengths and sample temperatures. Analysis of the results obtained using

[Surgical Treatment of Acetabulum Fractures with a New Acetabulum Butterfly Plate].

Introduction: There have been significant increases in the number of acetabular fractures in elderly patients with primarily ventral pathology and medial protrusion of the femoral head. We have developed the "acetabulum wing plate", which is designed to facilitate repositioning, with its anatomically precontoured structure, and which offers full support of the quadrilateral surface, thus counteracting the force of the femoral head pushing inwards. Conventional plate osteosynthesis only provides insufficient support to the medial surface. After a successful series of biomechanical tests, we now
