Bystander intervention programs are emerging as a promising approach to prevent and respond to gender-based violence (GBV). However, no extensive review of bystander interventions in community-based settings or in lower- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is available. This narrative review aimed to map the existing literature on bystander interventions and identify gaps for future research priorities in the field. Using the scoping review methods of Arksey and O'Malley, relevant studies were identified through broad search criteria across the MEDLINE, Scopus, and PsycINFO databases, as well

Complement plays a vital role in both the innate and adaptive immune systems. It recognizes a target, opsonizes it, generates anaphylatoxins, and directly kills cells through the membrane attack complex (MAC). This final function, which assembles C5b-9(n) on viable cell surfaces, can kill host cells through bystander lysis. Here we identify for the first time compounds that can inhibit bystander lysis while not interfering with the other essential functions of complement. We show that aurin tricarboxylic acid (ATA), aurin quadracarboxylic acid (AQA), and aurin hexacarboxylic acid (AHA), block

PURPOSE: This article seeks to illustrate some contributions of radiation chemistry to radiobiology and related science, and to draw attention to examples where radiation chemistry is central to our knowledge of specific aspects. Radiation chemistry is a mature branch of radiation science which is continually evolving and finding wider applications. This is particularly apparent in the study of the roles of free radicals in biology generally, and radiation biology specifically. The chemical viewpoint helps unite the spatial and temporal insight coming from radiation physics with the diversity

We describe a case of post-incisional atrial tachycardia resembling typical atrial flutter on the surface ECG. Typical atrial flutter reentry was ruled out by the results of activation and entrainment mapping. Nevertheless, overdrive pacing from the lateral edge of the cavo-tricuspid isthmus produced tachycardia entrainment with concealed fusion associated with post-pacing and stimulus-to-P wave onset intervals exactly matching the tachycardia cycle length duration and the electrogram-to-P wave onset interval, respectively. Therefore, that site was firstly severed by sequential radiofrequency

Cells infected with pathogens can contribute to clearing infections by releasing signals that instruct neighbouring cells to mount a pro-inflammatory cytokine response, or by other mechanisms that reduce bystander cells' susceptibility to infection. Here, we show the opposite effect: epithelial cells infected with Salmonella Typhimurium secrete host factors that facilitate the infection of bystander cells. We find that the endoplasmic reticulum stress response is activated in both infected and bystander cells, and this leads to activation of JNK pathway, downregulation of transcription factor

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association between Child Opportunity Index (COI) and race and ethnicity and pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) outcomes and the role of bystander response (bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation and/or defibrillator use) as a mediator.
METHODS: This is a retrospective cohort study using the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival (CARES) of children ≤18 years with OHCA. The exposures are COI quintiles (very low indicates the most disadvantaged neighborhoods) and race and ethnicity. The primary outcome is survival to hospital discharge with favorab

Background/Objectives: Bystander cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) improves outcome after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA), but whether its neurological benefit operates solely through prehospital return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) is unresolved. We quantified the mediated and unmediated components. Methods: Retrospective cohort study of the Korean nationwide OHCA registry (2009-2024) in adults with cardiac or respiratory arrest, excluding arrests witnessed by on-duty personnel. The primary outcome was favorable neurological survival (Cerebral Performance Category 1-2 at discharge

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The current review aims to summarize the epidemiology, cause, pathophysiology, and management of hemolytic transfusion reactions in sickle-cell disease (SCD).
RECENT FINDINGS: Patients undergoing occasional, isolated transfusions have been shown to have a higher risk of developing this condition. Despite the identification of well known risk factors, including alloimmunization, the pathophysiology of this syndrome remains unclear, as very severe forms with hyperhemolysis may develop in the absence of detectable antibodies, or with antibodies that are not considered to be cl

On March 11, 2011, a devastating earthquake and subsequent tsunami caused serious damage to areas of the Pacific coast in Fukushima prefecture and prompted fears among the residents about a possible meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant reactors. As of 2017, over six years have passed since the Fukushima nuclear crisis and yet the full ramifications of the biological exposures to this accidental release of radioactive substances remain unclear. Furthermore, although several genetic studies have determined that the variation in radiation sensitivity among different individuals i

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs) are complex diseases that develop as a result of interactions between genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors. Significant progress has been made in our understanding of the genetic and environmental triggers contributing to AITD. The major environmental triggers of AITD include iodine, smoking, medications, pregnancy, and possibly stress. In this review we will focus on two well-documented environmental triggers of AITD, hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and interferon alpha (IFNa) therapy. Chronic HCV infection has been shown to be associated with i

Autoimmune reactions to vaccinations may rarely be induced in predisposed individuals by molecular mimicry or bystander activation mechanisms. Autoimmune reactions reliably considered vaccine-associated, include Guillain-Barré syndrome after 1976 swine influenza vaccine, immune thrombocytopenic purpura after measles/mumps/rubella vaccine, and myopericarditis after smallpox vaccination, whereas the suspected association between hepatitis B vaccine and multiple sclerosis has not been further confirmed, even though it has been recently reconsidered, and the one between childhood immunization and

OBJECTIVE: Understanding the consequences that occur when bystanders intervene to address problematic alcohol use in others is of utmost importance because the consequences that bystanders experience can influence their behavior in future situations. Consequences are defined as the effects of attempting to help another person and may be positive and/or negative. Given the dearth of measurement scales for alcohol-related bystander intervention, the present study aimed to develop two valid and reliable measures of consequences following alcohol-related bystander intervention: one assessing posit

In most traffic accidents, bystanders arrive at the scene before the rescuers. If they provide the right help, they can play an important and effective role in reducing the number of deaths and complications caused by these accidents. However, in many cases, fears and concerns prevent bystanders from providing assistance. This study aims to investigate and understand the fears and concerns of bystanders when they decide to help in traffic accidents. In 2022, this study was carried out in Iran using a qualitative content analysis approach. The data was collected through semistructured interview

INTRODUCTION: Hantaan virus (HTNV) can cause endothelium injury in hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) patients. Bystander activation of CD8+ T cells by virus infection has been shown that was involved in host injury, but it is unclear during HTNV infection. This project aimed to study the effect of bystander-activated CD8+ T cell responses in HTNV infection.
METHODS: The in vitro infection model was established to imitate the injury of endothelium in HFRS patients. Flow cytometry was performed to detect the expression of markers of tetramer+ CD8+ T cells and human umbilical vein end

Image-based sexual abuse (IBSA) encompasses the taking, sharing, and/or making threats to share nude or sexual images of others without consent. Research shows that a large percentage of individuals have been a bystander to IBSA, but most do not intervene. Currently, there is little understanding of why this is the case. The research presented in this article begins to address this gap in the literature by identifying situational factors that facilitate or inhibit behavioral intentions to intervene through three experimental studies. In each study, situational factors were manipulated using vi

It is often said that intimate partner violence (IPV) happens "behind closed doors"; however, research on IPV and other crimes suggests that witnesses are sometimes present. This suggests that bystanders may be in a position to help victims or potential victims of violence. Bystander behavior has been studied primarily in school settings, and consequently, little is known about how often it occurs or what its effects may be in the broader community. This study examined IPV incidents in a rural sample to assess the presence and potential impact of bystanders on victim-reported outcomes. One tho

Bystander intervention skills training is a leading sexual assault prevention strategy aimed at increasing an individual's ability to discern when someone is at risk for harm and increase their willingness and ability to safely intervene. Minimal research has considered the association of alcohol use and sexual assault victimization history on identifying bystander intervention opportunities (events when someone can intervene to prevent harm) and engaging in bystander behaviors (events when someone intervenes to prevent harm). We explored the interactions between alcohol use and sexual assault

Small-molecule drug conjugates (SMDCs) have emerged as a promising class of targeted therapeutics, yet their clinical translation has been hindered by suboptimal efficacy and safety, with conventional optimization largely restricted to variations in ligand design and linker chemistry. We propose a dual-payload strategy that enhances therapeutic efficacy while concurrently minimizing off-target diffusion that contributes to systemic toxicity. In this proof-of-concept study, a representative SMDC bearing two degrader payloads, termed Bi-LIVTAC (XZ1618), demonstrates improved targeted cytotoxicit

Extracellular vesicles from eukaryotic cells and outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) released from gram-negative bacteria have been described as mediators of pathogen-host interaction and intercellular communication. Legionella pneumophila (L. pneumophila) is a causative agent of severe pneumonia. The differential effect of bacterial and host cell vesicles in L. pneumophila infection is unknown so far. We infected THP-1-derived or primary human macrophages with L. pneumophila and isolated supernatant vesicles by differential centrifugation. We observed an increase of exosomes in the 100 k pellet by
