Markers of inflammation, such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and fibrinogen, have been shown to be predictive of cardiovascular disease. In the Physicians Health Study, the magnitude of reduction in the risk of myocardial infarction with aspirin therapy was related to baseline CRP levels, raising the possibility that the protective effect of aspirin may be due to antiinflammatory properties in addition to its antiplatelet effect. We therefore investigated whether aspirin therapy lowers CRP levels. Because heavy physical exertion is a well-known trigger of myocardial infarction, we also investigat

Over the past few years, a flurry of data in the medical literature has strongly implicated C-reactive protein (CRP) as a marker of inflammation in coronary artery disease (CAD). Recognizing the likely integral role that inflammation plays in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, many hospital laboratories have tests to measure CRP concentration in the clinical setting. However, the clinical use of these tests still need definition. To date, of the plasma-based markers investigated, CRP provides the strongest risk prediction for cardiovascular disease in men and women. Questions remain regardin

The currently recommended protocol for treatment of kala-azar (KA) necessitates repeated bone marrow/splenic aspiration to monitor the response and duration of therapy as well as to detect resistance and change to alternative drugs. These procedures being invasive, there is a pressing need for less invasive diagnostic tools for this purpose. We have evaluated the role of C-reactive protein (CRP) in 201 children with visceral leishmaniasis at different stages of the disease to work out the relationship, if any, between CRP levels and disease activity, including response to therapy. The subjects

Interactions between adult Hymenolepis diminuta and rat C-reactive protein (CRP) were investigated in vivo and in vitro. Using an ELISA technique, serum levels of CRP were monitored in rats infected with 100 cysticercoids. Although infection increased the level of this protein in the early stages of parasitization, the increase was not significant until 35 days post-infection (p.i.). Secondary infections did not enhance the response. When H. diminuta was cultured in the presence of CRP, reduced worm motility and opaque areas were observed and electron microscopical studies revealed shedding of

Circulating levels of haptoglobin and C-reactive protein were studied in patients of skeletal fluorosis and compared with two types of controls. The first type of control included normal healthy individuals consuming water containing permissible levels of fluoride (up to 1 mg/L). The second type of control included individuals consuming water contaminated with fluoride (1.2-14.5 mg/L) but not exhibiting clinical manifestations of skeletal fluorosis. A significant increase in the levels of haptoglobin (p < 0.01) and C-reactive protein (p < 0.01) as well as a raised erythrocyte sedimentation rat

The value of cerebrospinal fluid C-reactive protein (CSF CRP) determination as a diagnostic aid in infective meningitis has been investigated in four groups of children. In a "no meningitis" group of 10 children, a median CSF CRP value of 0.08 micrograms/ml was obtained (range 0 to 0.31 micrograms/ml); in a viral meningitis group of 21 children a median value of 0.01 micrograms/ml (range 0 to 3.06 micrograms/ml); in a bacterial meningitis group of 27 children a median value of 9.6 micrograms/ml (range 0 to 31.5 micrograms/ml); and in a tuberculous meningitis group of 18 children a median value

We have evaluated a commercially available latex agglutination system for the detection of C-reactive protein in CSF by a prospective study of 56 patients with CSF pleocytosis. On initial lumbar puncture, C-RP was detected in 100% (24/24) of patients with culture-proven bacterial meningitis, compared to 6% (2/32) of patients in the nonbacterial group (chi 2 c = 44.8, P less than 0.0001). C-RP in CSF had a sensitivity of 1.0 and a specificity of 0.94 for detecting culture-positive, bacterial meningitis. It was a more sensitive test for differentiating bacterial from nonbacterial meningitis on i

OBJECTIVES: We previously found that discrepancy between serum amyloid A (SAA) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels linked to the difference of SAA/CRP ratio in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis, and the ratio varied among different patients. This study aimed to determine why the SAA/CRP ratio differed among different patients.
METHODS: The patients (n = 466) with most of inflammatory diseases were enrolled. After examined CRP and SAA concentrations, we compared the SAA/CRP ratio, and SAA and CRP concentrations in men and women.
RESULTS: The SAA/CRP ratio varied dramatically among diff

Purpose: C-reactive protein (CRP) functions as a nonspecific marker in various inflammatory disorders, particularly in evaluating the efficacy of pharmacological treatments in patients with ulcerative colitis. The existing body of evidence does not offer adequate support for the direct implication of CRP in modulating the advancement of ulcerative colitis. Methods: Our study employed a rigorous mouse model. An ulcerative colitis mouse model was established by subjecting CRP-deficient mice to dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) treatment. The phenotype of the mice, which encompassed parameters such as

Acute phase response is a nonspecific reaction to disturbances in homeostasis during which the production of some Acute Phase Proteins (APPs) is stimulated; they are sensitive but nonspecific markers of systemic inflammatory processes. The major positive APP in dogs is the C-reactive protein (CRP). The dynamic of its concentration changes fast, rising and decreasing rapidly with the onset and removal of the inflammatory stimulus. It increases within the first 4-24 h after the stimulus and reaches up to a 50-100-fold increase of the baseline level. It has been documented that this APP's concent

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an acute inflammatory protein that increases up to 1,000-fold at sites of infection or inflammation. CRP is produced as a homopentameric protein, termed native CRP (nCRP), which can irreversibly dissociate at sites of inflammation and infection into five separate monomers, termed monomeric CRP (mCRP). CRP is synthesized primarily in liver hepatocytes but also by smooth muscle cells, macrophages, endothelial cells, lymphocytes, and adipocytes. Evidence suggests that estrogen in the form of hormone replacement therapy influences CRP levels in the elderly. Having been

We observed the changes in serum levels of interleukin 6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in a patient with hepatoblastoma exhibiting thrombocytosis. The concomitant changes of IL-6 and CRP concentrations after the initiation of chemotherapy, in the absence of infection, suggested that the IL-6, which is synthesized in hepatoblastoma cells and induces thrombocytosis, also stimulated CRP production in the present case. IL-6 is thought to play an important role in thrombocytosis in hepatoblastoma.

Measurements of C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with Dupuytren's contraction have confirmed that such measurements may help objective the contraindications to surgery and specify the scope of intervention. CRP levels increase parallel with the flexion contracture augmentation and depend on the clinical form of the disease.

The C-reactive protein is specifically increased in the acute phase of inflammation. Its level in the serum is measured by the use of immunonephelometry and is obtainable after 2.5 hours. It normally ranges between 3 and 22 mg/litre. The authors have measured the C-reactive protein after 50 surgical procedures in septic cases. They have compared its levels with other biological tests such as the sedimentation rate and the leucocyte count. The variations in C-reactive protein occurred very early and were very extensive, the increase ranging between 200 and 1500 per cent after the surgical proce

UNLABELLED: Currently, the research of the pathogenetic mechanisms of the chronification of the demyelinating after the development of an acute demyelination episode (ADE) remains an urgent issue. An important role in maintaining autoimmune inflammation in the central nervous system is played by proinflammatory cytokines and proteins of the acute phase of inflammation, among which interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and C-reactive protein (CRP) are distinguished.
THE AIM OF THE STUDY: Is to estimate the levels of IL-1β, IL-6 and CRP in the blood plasma of patients with ADE and in the

Background Acute pancreatitis (AP) is a common and potentially life-threatening condition with a wide spectrum of severity. While most cases are mild, a subset progresses to severe disease with high mortality. This study evaluates the predictive value of the C-reactive protein (CRP)/albumin ratio (CAR), an inflammation-based biomarker, in determining AP severity. Methods A prospective, observational study was conducted among adult patients diagnosed with AP. CRP and albumin levels were measured at presentation, and CAR was calculated and categorized into three quantiles (≤6.7, 6.7-30.5, ≥30.5)
