Cadmium (Cd) is a highly toxic heavy metal that accumulates in living system and as such is currently one of the most important occupational and environmental pollutants. Cd reaches into the environment by anthropogenic mobilization and it is absorbed from tobacco consumption or ingestion of contaminated substances. Its extremely long biological half-life (approximately 20-30 years in humans) and low rate of excretion from the body cause cadmium storage predominantly in soft tissues (primarily, liver and kidneys) with a diversity of toxic effects such as nephrotoxicity, hepatotoxicity, endocri

Selection of poplar species with greater Cd tolerance and exploiting the physiological mechanisms involved in Cd tolerance are crucial for application of these species to phyto-remediation. The aim of this study is to investigate variation in Cd tolerance among the six poplar species and its underlying physiological mechanisms. Cuttings of six Populus species were cultivated for 10 weeks before exposure to either 0 or 200 μM CdSO(4) for 20 days. Gas exchange in mature leaves was determined by a portable photosynthesis system. Cd concentrations in tissues were analyzed by a flame atomic absorba

Cadmium is a nonessential heavy metal and ubiquitous potential environmental pollutant. Although the kidney proximal tubule is an important target for cadmium, the underlying cellular mechanisms of cadmium-induced renal toxicity remain elusive. Numerous studies have demonstrated that cadmium induces apoptotic cell death in various cell types via several apoptotic pathways, including mitochondria-mediated apoptotic cell death. In the epithelial cells of renal proximal tubules, cadmium can also induce apoptotic cell death in vivo and in vitro, which suggests that cell death of the epithelial cel

Cadmium is an ubiquitous environmental contaminant that represents hazard to humans and wildlife. It is found in the air, soil and water and, due to its extremely long half-life, accumulates in plants and animals. The main source of cadmium exposure for non-smoking human population is food. Cadmium is primarily toxic to the kidney, but has been also classified as carcinogenic to humans by several regulatory agencies. Current evidence suggests that exposure to cadmium induces genomic instability through complex and multifactorial mechanisms. Cadmium dose not induce direct DNA damage, however it

Complex formation between heavy metal ions and glutathione (GSH) is considered as the initial step in many detoxification processes in living organisms. In this study the structure and coordination between the cadmium(II) ion and GSH were investigated in aqueous solutions (pH 7.5 and 11.0) and in the solid state, using a combination of spectroscopic techniques. The similarity of the Cd K-edge and L(3)-edge X-ray absorption spectra of the solid compound [Cd(GS)(GSH)]ClO(4).3H(2)O, precipitating at pH 3.0, with the previously studied cysteine compound {Cd(HCys)(2).H(2)O}(2).H(3)O(+).ClO(4) (-) c

Recent epidemiological studies suggest a positive association between exposure to the environmental pollutant cadmium (Cd) and the incidence and severity of diabetes. In this review, we examine the literature suggesting a relationship between Cd exposure, elevated blood glucose levels, and the development of diabetes. In addition we review human and animal studies indicating that Cd potentiates or exacerbates diabetic nephropathy. We also review the various possible cellular mechanisms by which Cd may alter blood glucose levels. In addition, we present some novel findings from our own laborato

In the title compound, [Cd(dien)(2)]I(2), where dien = diethyl-enetriamine (C(4)H(13)N(3)), the Cd(II) ion is in a distorted octa-hedral coordination environment. In the crystal structure, inter-molecular N-H⋯I hydrogen bonds link cations and anions into a three-dimensional network.

The cadmium body burden, blood and urine cadmium concentrations, and renal function were studied in a group of 53 cadmium solderers. The results showed raised blood and urine cadmium concentrations and raised cadmium body burden in all workers (31) with more than five years exposure, with 27 having urine cadmium concentrations in excess of the proposed biological threshold of 10 nmol/mmol creatinine. Renal tubular dysfunction was found in 17 of the subjects with more than five years exposure and in one this was associated with glomerular dysfunction. These data indicate that cadmium body burde

Occupational and environmental exposure to cadmium leads to a progressive and almost irreversible accumulation of the metal in the body. The epidemiological and experimental studies carried out by the authors allow them to draw the following conclusions: 1) the kidney is usually the critical organ i.e. the organ exhibiting the first signs of adverse effects following long term moderate exposure to cadmium by inhalation or by ingestion. 2) Cadmium interferes not only with the tubular reabsorption process(es) for low molecular weight proteins (e.g. beta 2 . microglobulin, retinol binding protein

Few works have addressed the effects provoked by the exposure to cadmium containing nanoparticles (NPs) on adult zebrafish (Danio rerio). We studied the effects of CdS NPs (5 nm) or ionic cadmium (10 μg Cd/L) after 3 and 21 d of exposure and at 6 months post-exposure (mpe). Acute toxicity was recorded after exposure to both forms of cadmium. Significant cadmium accumulation was measured in the whole fish after both treatments and autometallography showed a higher accumulation of metal in the intestine than that in the liver. Histopathological alterations, such as inflammation in gills and vacu

In this study we investigate the effects of cadmium stress on Astragalus membranaceus seedlings and the alleviative effects of attapulgite clay in growth substrate on cadmium stress to A. membranaceus seedlings. The results showed that the Y (Ⅱ) (effective photochemical quantum yield of PSⅡ photosynthetic), qP(photochemical quenching coefficient), ETR(the rate of non-cyclic electrontransport through PSⅡ), and chlorophyll content of the leaves were significantly decreased with the increase of cadmium concentrations, while the cadmium content, non-photochemical quenching(NPQ, qN) of the leaves a

Simultaneous treatment with cadmium chloride (5 micrograms/ml medium) and manganese chloride (5 or 10 micrograms/ml medium) was less toxic to mouse pre-implantation zygotes in vitro than cadmium alone. Such a protective effect of manganese, resembling that of zinc, suggests that amelioration of cadmium-treated pre-embryos in vitro is not unique to zinc. The amelioration may require only the presence of another divalent metallic ion, such as zinc or manganese, which is capable of competing with cadmium for binding sites possibly involved in uptake. Under calcium-free conditions cadmium embryoto

Phytochelatins (PCs) are glutathione-derived peptides that function in heavy metal detoxification in plants and certain fungi. Recent research in Arabidopsis has shown that PCs undergo long-distance transport between roots and shoots. However, it remains unknown which tissues or vascular systems, xylem or phloem, mediate PC translocation and whether PC transport contributes to physiologically relevant long-distance transport of cadmium (Cd) between shoots and roots. To address these questions, xylem and phloem sap were obtained from Brassica napus to quantitatively analyze which thiol species

Although the link between cadmium (Cd) and N availability has been studied, the mechanisms of Cd transport and detoxification in dioecious plants remain underexplored. This study examined sex-specific Cd transport, accumulation, and cell wall detoxification in Populus cathayana using histochemical assays, ecophysiological measures, energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis, and transcriptomic analyses. Bark accumulated 85% Cd in the shoots of both sexes, while leaf Cd was highest in females under NH4 + supply. Root Cd accumulation was greater with NO3 - than NH4 +, with 40%-60% of Cd sequestrated

Cadmium (Cd) contamination of farmland soils leads to Cd accumulation in crops and reduced micronutrient uptake, posing grave risks to food safety. Herein, we investigated the enrichment and transportation patterns of Cd and trace elements in different parts of six wheat genotypes grown in weakly alkaline Cd-contaminated soils via pot experiments. The results revealed that the wheat grain variety with high Cd accumulation (Ningmai13) demonstrated a 1.94-fold increase compared to the variety with low accumulation (Yanong0428). The transfer factor of Cd from wheat straw to grain ranged from 0.31

Cadmium is a heavy metal and a non-biodegradable environmental contaminant, and its omnipresence ensures its recurrent exposure to humans and animals. Its intake by chicks leads to fatal implications. Cadmium chloride (CdCl2) because of its bio-accumulative nature is an emerging threat to the poultry industry as well as to the humans which consumes these cadmium-intoxicated chickens. In the current study, the target was to elucidate the toxic effects of CdCl2on body weight, hematological, and biochemical parameters as well as its bioaccumulation in different organs of broiler chicks. Various c

Cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) concentrations were determined by solid sampling atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) in rat maternal and fetal tissues after exposure to cadmium. Cadmium was administered subcutaneously as CdCl2 in saline daily during pregnancy. Two experiments were performed. In expt. I we investigated the tissue concentration at day 19 (gestational age) after administration of several doses: 0, 1.1, 2.2, 4.4, and 8.8 mumol Cd/kg/day. In expt. II the course of the Cd and Zn concentrations during pregnancy was investigated by collecting samples at days 14, 16, 18 and 20, after daily
