A preliminary study of the submandibular gland of the rat after one-year cadmium intoxication. Part I. Cadmium concentration.

The aim of the present study was to establish to what degree a one-year exposure of rat females to 5, 50 and 100 mg Cd/l affects the weight of the submandibular glands and their cadmium levels. We observed a decrease in the weight of the submandibular glands in the rat females from Groups I, II and III, compared to the control rats. We also found an increase in cadmium levels in the submandibular glands in Groups I, II and III, in comparison to the control. The highest cadmium concentration was noted in the submandibular glands in Group III, which was accompanied by the greatest weight reducti

A global perspective on cadmium pollution and toxicity in non-occupationally exposed population.

Cadmium is a non-essential element that has high rates of soil to plant transference compared with other non-essential elements, and certain plant species accumulate large amounts of cadmium from low cadmium content soils. In this paper, levels of cadmium found in major food groups are highlighted together with cadmium levels found in liver and kidney samples from non-occupationally exposed populations. Data on human kidney cadmium levels identified recently, including the study in our own laboratory, are compared with older studies. Human-tissue cadmium contents showed large variations among

[Cadmium toxicity: summary of personal studies].

Occupational and environmental exposure to cadmium leads to a progressive and almost irreversible accumulation of the metal in the body. The epidemiological and experimental studies carried out by the authors allow them to draw the following conclusions: 1) the kidney is usually the critical organ i.e. the organ exhibiting the first signs of adverse effects following long term moderate exposure to cadmium by inhalation or by ingestion. 2) Cadmium interferes not only with the tubular reabsorption process(es) for low molecular weight proteins (e.g. beta 2 . microglobulin, retinol binding protein

Heavy Metal Toxicity in Chronic Renal Failure and Cardiovascular Disease: Possible Role for Chelation Therapy.

Exposure to heavy metals is common. This exposure is related to environmental contamination of air, water and soil, occupational exposure, accumulation in food, tobacco, and other factors. Cadmium and lead are notable for their widespread contamination, long-lasting effects in the body, and renal as well as cardiovascular toxicity. Acute toxicity due to high-level exposure, as well as chronic low-level exposure are now well-established pathogenic entities. Both chronic renal failure and ischemic heart disease patients have been treated separately in recent studies with ethylenediaminetetraacet

Impaired resistance to Listeria monocytogenes in mice chronically exposed to cadmium.

It is shown in this work that resistance to Listeria monocytogenes is greatly impaired in C57BL/6 mice chronically exposed to cadmium (Cd) chloride. Animals received 0.5 mg/kg Cd by an intraperitoneal route three times a week during a 4-week period and were then infected with L. monocytogenes. Susceptibility to this pathogenic bacteria was not due to a defect of the specific immune response, since mice developed normal levels of anti-Listeria T cell-mediated immunity and did not show any impairment of macrophage activation. In fact, bacterial growth in organs was rapid in Cd-exposed mice durin

Zinc oxide/graphene oxide nanocomposites efficiently inhibited cadmium-induced hepatotoxicity via releasing Zn ions and up-regulating MRP1 expression.

Environmental cadmium (Cd) pollution has been verified to associated with various hepatic diseases, as Cd has been classified as one of the TOP 20 Hazardous Substances and liver is the main target of Cd poisoning. However, to design efficient hepatic antidotes with excellent detoxification capacity and reveal their underlying mechanism(s) are still challenges in Cd detoxification. Herein, ZnO/GO nanocomposites with favorable biocompatibility was uncovered their advanced function against Cd-elicited liver damage at the in situ level in vivo by 9.4 T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Rice and heavy metals: A review of cadmium impact and potential remediation techniques.

In recent decades, the menace of heavy metals to food security and human health has become a serious concern. Given its status as the primary provider of food globally, significant research has been done to ensure the safe cultivation of rice, particularly concerning the mitigation of heavy metal contamination. Therefore, this article focuses on the effects and poisoning mechanism of heavy metals, primarily cadmium, on rice. Here, we have discussed the absorption, translocation, and toxicity mechanism of cadmium in rice and the external factors, such as soil pH, organic matter, microorganisms,

The concentration levels of Cd, Pb, Hg, Cu, Zn and Se in blood of the population in the Czech Republic.

Knowledge of normal levels of concentrations of trace elements (Cd, Pb, Hg, Cu, Zn, and Se) in the population serves, among others, in design of regulations concerning health protection, determination of exposure limits and prevention of diseases caused by deficiency of trace elements. Concentrations of the named elements in whole blood of the Czech population were determined by means of atomic absorption spectrometry. The blood was collected during 1996-1998 from 1,216 blood donors (896 males and 320 females, average age 33 years) and 758 children (397 boys and 361 girls, average age 9.9 year

[Aspects of enzymatic toxicology of metals. A review (author's transl)].

The adverse and beneficial effects of metals have occupied a great concern in many branches of biology for centuries, but their biochemical roles have been studied systematically only in the last four decades. Almost all the metals, especially those of high toxicity, bind readily to mercapto groups, and these are frequently important in enzyme systems. Furthermore, a large number of in vitro and in vivo studies have shown that toxic metals can replace essential metals in many of their metalloenzymes, with resultant changes in activity. Metals also bind to protein, phospholipid and nucleic acid

[Biological function of some elements and their compounds. III. Zinc--component and activator of enzymes].

Zinc plays many basic metabolic functions in human organism as a co-enzymatic or activator about 80 enzymes. It participates in metabolic changes of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates. Zinc easily binds with nucleic acids with beneficial effect on active transport, protein biosynthesis, transcription, and mRNA synthesis. It is inevitable for proper functioning of the respiratory and reproductive systems. Zinc acts protectively in lead and cadmium poisoning and it participates in the elimination of free superoxide radicals (it inhibits of oxygenation of non-saturated fatty acids). It enables no

Chemistry, Pharmacology, and Toxicology of Monoisoamyl Dimercaptosuccinic Acid: A Chelating Agent for Chronic Metal Poisoning.

Arsenic, a metalloid, is known to cause deleterious effects in various body organs, particularly the liver, urinary bladder, and brain, and these effects are primarily mediated through oxidative stress. Chelation therapy has been considered one of the promising medical treatments for arsenic poisoning. Meso 2,3- dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) has been recognized as one of the most effective chelating drugs to treat arsenic poisoning. However, the drug is compromised with a number of shortcomings, including the inability to treat chronic arsenic poisoning due to its extracellular distribution.

Abnormalities in cadmium fluoride kinetics in serum, bile, and urine after single intravenous administration of toxic doses to rats.

Cadmium fluoride (CdF2, CdF for short) is the most lethal and hepatotoxic of all Cd-containing compounds. The toxic effects of CdF appear to depend on its detoxification and elimination. This study was designed to determine the early dynamics of the absorption, systemic distribution, and metabolism of CdF. The kinetics of cadmium and fluoride were investigated in the blood, bile, and urine of rats as a model of accidental occupational exposure to CdF. The serum concentration-time profiles measured after intravenous CdF (1.34, 2.67 or 4.01 mg/ per kg body weight) administration were analyzed by

Cadmium, metallothionein and renal tubular toxicity.

Cadmium-induced nephrotoxicity develops at cadmium concentrations in the renal cortex of 10-300 micrograms/g wet weight. The actual concentration at which it develops depends on a number of factors, e.g., exposure route, chemical species of cadmium administered, rate of administration and simultaneous exposure to other metals. The role of these factors can be explained by a mechanism of cadmium nephrotoxicity in which both extracellular and intracellular metallothionein binding play an essential role. In reindeer used for human food, cadmium was shown to be bound to metallothionein-like protei

Study on workers exposed to cadmium in alkaline storage battery manufacturing and PVC compounding.

The extent of cadmium exposure was studied in a cadmium-nickel battery factory and 8 PVC factories using cadmium stabilisers in the compounding of PVC. A total of 101 cadmium-exposed workers and 21 control subjects matched by sex, age, ethnic group and smoking history was investigated. Blood and urine cadmium levels were considerably elevated in the battery workers but were not raised in the PVC workers. These findings were consistent with the results of cadmium-in-air assessments. Among the female battery workers, urine cadmium excretion increased significantly with employment time. There was
