Enamel specimens from unerupted third molars were treated with the supernatant of monofluorophosphate (MFP)-containing toothpaste slurries in water. Calcium fluoride-like particles were formed on the enamel surface during a 24-h exposure. The globules were soluble in alkali. More particles were seen on enamel treated with a toothpaste containing both MFP and NaF. The experiments showed that the calcium fluoride-like material formed on enamel after treatment with MFP-containing toothpaste probably originates from the free fluoride present in the pastes. The relatively moderate deposition of flu

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of two different fluoride varnishes used alone or in combination with laser treatment on permanent and primary tooth enamel. Methods: Ninety-six primary and 96 permanent molar samples were divided into six groups. The levels of calcium, phosphorus, fluoride, and silver ions of each sample were analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Six different treatments were applied to 12 different groups (n = 15) as control (g1/G1), fluoride varnish (g2/G2), casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP)-fluoride

Blocks of human enamel were cycled through a demineralization--F-treatment-remineralization procedure and then analyzed for fluoride and the presence of caries-like lesions. Treatments with a sodium fluoride gel (5000 ppm F) increased the enamel fluoride concentration to 6500 ppm F, whereas a stannous fluoride gel (1000 ppm F) increased enamel fluoride to about 1200 ppm F. Although a control treatment (water) allowed caries-like lesions to form, as observed by microradiography, no lesions were found in either of the fluoride-treated groups. When the experiment was repeated with radioactive tee

It may be assumed that free ionic concentrations of calcium and phosphate in resting saliva tend to equilibrate with those in plaque fluid, and that salivary data can therefore be used to illustrate chemical conditions in both saliva and plaque. In the present study, salivary data collected from the literature or obtained in our laboratory were used to calculate degrees of super- and undersaturation with respect to apatites, brushite, beta-tricalcium phosphate, octacalcium phosphate, calcium carbonate and calcium fluoride in the pH range from 3 to 9. Concentrations of calcium, phosphate, fluor

Endemic skeletal fluorosis is a chronic metabolic bone and joint disease caused by ingesting large amounts of fluoride either through water or rarely from foods of endemic areas. Fluoride is a cumulative toxin which can alter accretion and resorption of bone tissue. It also affects the homeostasis of bone mineral metabolism. The total quantity of ingested fluoride is the single most important factor which determines the clinical course of the disease which is characterized by immobilization of joints of the axial skeleton and of the major joints of the extremities. A combination of osteosclero

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of CO(2) laser on fluoride uptake in the loosely- and firmly-bound forms in enamel.
METHODS: Five human molars were cut into halves before being treated with 2.0% NaF topical gel. Each half had three windows on the enamel surface, including one control and two experimental windows irradiated by two laser therapies. One half of each tooth was treated with 1 M KOH solution to remove the loosely-bound fluoride (calcium fluoride). A tooth section was obtained from each window and the relative fluorine concentration was analyze

Recent experience from different groups suggests that low fluoride doses resulting in moderate increases in bone mineral density (BMD) may be advantageous in terms of fracture-reducing potency. In a randomized prospective 3-year study we examined the therapeutic efficacy of different dosages of monofluorophosphate (MFP) plus calcium in comparison with calcium alone in 134 women with established postmenopausal osteoporosis (mean age 64.0 years, average vertebral fractures per patient 3.6). Group A received 1000 mg calcium/day and a low-dose intermittent MFP regimen (3 months on, 1 month off) co

This study evaluated the effect of tricalcium phosphate-containing fluoride varnish on the prevention of root caries using an in-air micro-proton induced X-ray/gamma-ray emission system and microcomputed tomography. Either fluoride varnish (FV) or tricalcium phosphate-containing fluoride varnish (WV) was applied to root dentin, whereas dentin without varnish were considered controls. After immersion in saline, dentin sections were prepared, and concentration of fluoride ion was measured. These specimens were demineralized, and the mineral loss was measured. In this in vitro study, examination of the enamel surface morphology after topical application of an amine fluoride solution with different fluoride (F) content was carried out. Sound human enamel slabs were treated with an amine fluoride solution containing either 1.0, 0.5 or 0.25% F for 3 min. during 3 days. All slabs were examined using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) qualitative analysis. The globular precipitates were revealed in all treated specimens, regardless of F content. The distribution of the deposits was more homogeneous in groups treated

Current models for increasing the anti-caries effects of fluoride (F) agents emphasize the importance of maintaining a cariostatic concentration of F in oral fluids. The concentration of F in oral fluids is maintained by the release of this ion from bioavailable reservoirs on the teeth, oral mucosa and - most importantly, because of its association with the caries process - dental plaque. Oral F reservoirs appear to be of two types: (1) mineral reservoirs, in particular calcium fluoride or phosphate-contaminated 'calcium-fluoride-like' deposits; (2) biological reservoirs, in particular (with r

The effect of sodium fluoride treatment in patients with otospongiosis has been evaluated blindly in a morphological and microchemical element analysis of otospongiotic specimens together with a prospective clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled study. The results show that using the calcium/phosphorus ratio as an indication for bone maturity, the sodium fluoride treatment can stabilize otospongiotic lesions in retaining calcium relative to phosphorus. The clinical double-blind, placebo-controlled study of 95 patients showed a statistically significant worse deterioration of the hearing los
