Calibrated finger rub auditory screening test (CALFRAST).

BACKGROUND: Determination of auditory function is a fundamental part of a complete neurologic examination. Disability from permanent hearing loss is common in the general population. Current bedside auditory tests are unreliable and cumbersome. We evaluated the calibrated finger rub auditory screening test (CALFRAST) as a routine diagnostic tool. METHODS: The sound spectrum and mean peak intensities of standard finger rub were measured, as well as background noise. CALFRAST overlapped the frequency spectrum of normal speech. Patients and companions were recruited from a neurology clinic. With

Calibrated lateral internal sphincterotomy for chronic anal fissure.

UNLABELLED: Lateral internal sphincterotomy is an effective procedure for the treatment of anal fissure, but may affected anal continence. We describe a procedure aimed at tailoring the division of the sphincter according to the degree of the hypertonia and to the sphincter length in order to offer an effective and safe treatment for chronic anal fissure. METHODS: The internal sphincter was divided on the basis of anal manometry results. The average of maximum values of resting pressure determined by the stationary motility protocol was considered the reference parameter to measure hypertonia

Calibrated automated thrombin generation measurement in clotting plasma.

Most eukaryotic cells retain a mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis (FASII) pathway whose acyl carrier protein (mACP) and 4-phosphopantetheine (Ppant) prosthetic group provide a soluble scaffold for acyl chain synthesis and biochemically couple FASII activity to mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) assembly and Fe-S cluster biogenesis. In contrast, the mitochondrion of Plasmodium falciparum malaria parasites lacks FASII enzymes yet curiously retains a divergent mACP lacking a Ppant group. We report that ligand-dependent knockdown of mACP is lethal to parasites, indicating an essential FA

The calibre changes of retinal vessels subject to prolonged hyperoxia.

The constriction of retinal vessels occurring in response to breathing 100% oxygen was studied in 10 normal subjects over a period of 30 min. Brachial blood pressure, radial pulse and end tidal CO2 were recorded throughout. The mean arteriolar constriction was 15.3% +/- 4.6 and venous constriction 21.8% +/- 4.3. Time constants (the time for 95% of the maximal response to have occurred) were 2.25 min +/- 0.75 and 2.37 min +/- 0.57 for arterioles and veins respectively. A highly variable late vascular response was recorded. A small proportion of arterial vessels showing a response were nonunifor

The interaction of chemo- and mechanoreceptor signals in the control of airway calibre.

The volume of an isolated tracheal segment and of the intrathoracic airways (intrathoracic portion of anatomical dead space) were measured during independent changes in ventilation minute volume and alveolar PCO2 and PO2, in order to assess the separate effects of chemoreceptor and mechanoreceptor signals upon airway calibre. The results were highly dependent upon initial airway tone, initial airway constriction favouring dilator responses and vice versa. Increasing alveolar PCO2 caused reflex airway constriction if ventilation was held constant. The magnitude of this response was reduced if v

Grazing-incidence scattering surveyed: towards reference methods for alignment and calibration.

Grazing-incidence small-angle scattering (GISAS) is a relatively young technique with important applications in thin-film technology and untapped potential when it comes to 2D analysis on an absolute intensity scale. Approaching standardization and reference methods early is foundational for reproducibility and comparability across laboratories and reduction of systematic error sources. It underpins trust in data obtained and accelerates innovation by ensuring that scientists work from a common methodological baseline. Accordingly, obtaining reproducible results from different GISAS instrument

MPA-based pointing calibration for Q/V band LEO canted antennas.

China’s satellite Internet infrastructure is undergoing rapid large scale deployment, in which high frequency three axis canted antennas serve as critical gateway stations for low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite networks. This application scenario imposes stringent requirements on antenna pointing calibration, including rapid implementation to support large scale deployment, high precision to accommodate narrow beam high frequency antennas, and strong robustness to ensure stable tracking during high elevation zenith pass satellite passes. To meet these demands, this paper proposes a pointing calib

Imaging and Calibration of Receptor-Specific Cellular Forces Using Biotinylated Ligands.

Covalent conjugation of ligand molecules to force sensors provides a powerful approach to image receptor-transmitted cellular forces. While this strategy is effective for small-molecule ligands, the conjugation process can damage large protein ligands. To address this challenge, we developed a modular mechano-fluorescent coating (mMFC) that enables receptor-specific force imaging using widely available biotinylated ligands. The mMFC construct consists of a poly-L-lysine (PLL) backbone for substrate adsorption, polyethylene glycol (PEG) grafts to prevent nonspecific binding, and DNA-based integ

Calibration-Free Online Detection in Wearable Motor Imagery Brain-Computer Interfaces.

Motor imagery brain-computer interfaces (MI-BCIs) remain challenging for practical use due to their reliance on multi-channel EEG devices and long calibration. To address these limitations, we proposed a wearable system for calibration-free online decoding using a lightweight, few-channel EEG headband, enabling portability, ease of use, and rapid setup. Specifically, we first built a large-scale wearable MI-EEG dataset from 100 healthy subjects to train a subject-independent model. We then developed a CNN-based temporal convolutional network (CTCNet) for online MI detection, which reduced comp

Enhancing Image-Text Retrieval via Region-Grid Interaction and Semantic Calibration.

Image-Text retrieval requires accurate semantic alignment between visual content and natural language descriptions. Most existing methods primarily rely on region features, which are typically object-centric and may overlook important contextual information. In contrast, grid features provide denser spatial coverage and richer local details, but often lack explicit semantic structure. To better exploit their complementarity, we propose a novel Region-Grid Interaction and Calibration Network (RGICN) for Image-Text retrieval. Specifically, we first design a Global-Guided Feature Interaction Modu

Surrogate-matrix calibration for quantitative GC-IMS headspace analysis of urine.

Quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in biological matrices remains challenging due to matrix-dependent headspace partitioning, the presence of endogenous analytes, and the intrinsically non-linear response of certain detectors. In this context, static headspace gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (HS-GC-IMS) offers high sensitivity for VOC profiling, but these combined effects complicate calibration and quantitative interpretation. In this work, a practical framework for quantitative VOC analysis in urine using HS-GC-IMS is presented, in which calibration is per

Data-Efficient, Precise Calibration of Optical Tweezers Using Stochastic Force Inference.

Precise quantification of microscopic forces in optical trapping is fundamental to a wide range of single-molecule biophysics. Conventional calibration techniques, however, require extensive datasets (typically exceeding 104 samples) to achieve statistical convergence in the presence of thermal noise and nonequilibrium artifacts. In this work, we employ the stochastic force inference (SFI) method, which combines information theory with statistical physics, to reconstruct deterministic force fields from noisy stochastic trajectories in optical traps. We demonstrate that the SFI-based calibratio

Design of a Multiangle Multidepth Flow Phantom for Ultrasound Flow Calibration.

Ultrasound flow phantoms are essential tools for the development of new flow imaging algorithms and for performing quality assurance in medical imaging. A comprehensive system calibration, from shallow to deep flow regions, is increasingly needed to test novel velocity imaging methods. This study describes the design, implementation, and testing of a novel multiangle, multidepth flow phantom. Such key features are achieved by offsetting the two flow channels from the surface and incorporating acoustic wedges into the design. Our experiments show that the phantom was effective in evaluating the

Spatial Calibration of Weigh-In-Motion Systems-Evaluation of Metrological Properties.

This article presents a method for calibration of dynamic vehicle weighing systems (WIM-Weigh-In-Motion) involving the calibration of all WIM stations operating within a given road network segment as a single process. A key assumption of the method is the presence of at least one scale with significantly higher accuracy than the calibrated systems in this part of road network. This reference scale function may be played by a static scale, slow-pass scale (LS-WIM-Low-Speed WIM) for measurement of vehicle axle load or by a selected WIM system with heightened accuracy. Both the reference scale an

A class-wise quantum relational calibration network for brain tumor diagnosis.

Accurate and reliable brain tumor diagnosis from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) remains a challenging task, particularly in multi-class settings where inter-class ambiguity and miscalibration may degrade predictive performance. In this work, we propose a Class-wise Quantum Relational Calibration Network (CQRCNet), a hybrid quantum-classical framework that integrates quantum relational modeling into a classical convolutional neural network backbone. Our approach employs a parameter-shared and low-qubit quantum circuit to explicitly model pairwise interactions between class-specific evidences,

Advancing low-cost air quality monitor calibration with machine learning methods.

Low-cost monitors for measuring airborne contaminants have gained popularity due to their affordability, portability, and ease of use. However, they often exhibit significant biases compared to high-cost reference instruments. For optimal accuracy, these monitors require calibration and validation in their specific environment using expensive reference instruments, which are often scarce and costly. This study proposes machine-learning calibration methods that utilize a single high-cost instrument as an active reference to improve the accuracy of large networks of low-cost monitors. Three mach

Calibration correction to improve registration during cone-beam CT guided histotripsy.

BACKGROUND: Histotripsy is a non-invasive, non-ionizing, non-thermal focused ultrasound technique. High amplitude short acoustic pulses converge to create high negative pressures that cavitate endogenous gas into a bubble cloud leading to mechanical tissue destruction. In the United States, histotripsy is approved to treat liver tumors under diagnostic ultrasound guidance but in initial clinical cases, some areas of the liver have not been treated due to bone or gas obstructing the acoustic window for targeting. To address this limitation in visualization, cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT)

Developing a Calibration Method to Minimize Variability in Auditory Evoked Potentials.

PURPOSE: To reduce amplitude variability of auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) we developed a circuit that generates an electric calibration pulse (CalPulse) following each evoking sound presentation. We aim to determine if external CalPulse signals can function as a reliable calibration reference for AEP amplitude measurements. METHODS: The CalPulse circuit was integrated with an AEP recording montage. The amplitude and morphology of two CalPulse signals (square wave and sine wave) was first assessed in vitro with electrodes submerged in saline. Repeatability of the two signals was then compa

NMC3D: Non-Overlapping Multi-Camera Calibration Based on Sparse 3D Map.

With the advancement of computer vision and sensor technologies, many multi-camera systems are being developed for the control, planning, and other functionalities of unmanned systems or robots. The calibration of multi-camera systems determines the accuracy of their operation. However, calibration of multi-camera systems without overlapping parts is inaccurate. Furthermore, the potential of feature matching points and their spatial extent in calculating the extrinsic parameters of multi-camera systems has not yet been fully realized. To this end, we propose a multi-camera calibration algorith
