Interhemispheric visual integration in three cases of familial callosal agenesis.

Three cases of callosal agenesis (a 39-year-old woman and her 11- and 12-year-old daughters) were tested on their ability to integrate visual information between the visual hemifields. They were all able to name colors and digits in either hemifield with high accuracy and were able to decide whether letters or digits in opposite hemifields were the same or different. They had greater difficulty deciding whether colors in opposite hemifields were the same or different. When shown 6-letter words made up of pairs of 3-letter words that straddled the midline (e.g., MANAGE, ROTATE), they responded

Anterior (atypical) callosal absence due to cortical dysplasia and schizencephaly.

The corpus callosum develops from anterior to posterior, starting at the commissural plate of the lamina terminalis. We report a patient with cortical dysplasia and schizencephaly, which apparently interfered with the normal callosal development before 20 gestational weeks. The result was an atypical callosal dysgenesis in which the anterior parts (including anterior body, genu and rostrum) were absent while the remaining parts were developed. This finding suggests that the commissural plate may not be the only region where the corpus callosum starts to develop in some congenital brain malform

Dissociation of letter and picture naming resulting from callosal disconnection.

BACKGROUND: Detailed mapping of the corpus callosum for functional fractionation in humans remains incomplete. OBJECTIVE: To examine separable interhemispheric transfer of visual information by callosal fibers, especially in the splenium. METHODS: We examined callosal disconnection signs in a 14-year-old boy with a lesion confined to the posterior part of the splenium and reviewed reported cases with callosal lesions. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The patient presented with left hemialexia as the only manifestation of callosal disconnection syndrome. The only difficulty demonstrated was in readin

Corpus callosal changes associated with hydrocephalus: a report of two cases.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Focal or diffuse corpus callosal changes can occur in patients with active hydrocephalus who undergo shunting procedures. The neural compression caused by active hydrocephalus and the conditions that follow ventricular shunting may contribute to the development of these changes. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: Two patients who underwent successful shunting for hydrocephalus subsequently developed thickening and diffuse signal changes in the corpus callosum, which were revealed by magnetic resonance imaging. The abnormal signal intensity extended laterally and linearly along t

Callosal transfer of finger localization information in phonologically dyslexic adults.

Dyslexia, particularly phonological dyslexia, has been hypothesized to be associated with deficits in interhemispheric interactions mediated by the corpus callosum. Twenty-one dyslexic subjects were compared to 21 controls on the Finger Localization Test in order to observe patterns of tactile-motor integration and interhemispheric collaboration. When compared to control subjects, dyslexics showed consistent deficits in finger localization, particularly when more complex trials had to be completed. When subjects were re-grouped according to phonological processing ability (regardless of diagno

Chiari I malformation associated with callosal dysgenesis and ectopic neurohypophysis.

In patients with Chiari I malformation there usually is no anomaly of the supratentorial structures. In this communication we report a patient with Chiari I malformation, callosal dysgenesis, and an ectopic neurohypophysis. Both the splenium and the rostrum of the corpus callosum were hypoplastic, suggesting an intrinsic error which operated around 20 weeks of gestation. This may provide a clue for the time of onset of Chiari I malformation.

[A case of diagnostic dyspraxia without ideomotor apraxia by callosal lesion].

A case of diagnostic dyspraxia was reported. A 57-year-old right handed male had been suffering from the lack of cooperation between his right and left hands for six months. Except for decreased deep tendon reflexes in all extremities, there were no abnormal findings on neurological examination. On neuropsychological examination, he was attentive, well orientated and his spontaneous speech, comprehension, naming, repetition and reading were intact. There was peculiar dissociative behavior between his right and left hands. For instance, he put a cigarette or coin in the pocket with his right ha

Limitations of interhemispheric extracallosal transfer of visual information in callosal agenesis.

A 57-year-old patient with callosal but not anterior commissure agenesis was investigated with a visual interfield comparison and a naming task. Stimuli were presented tachistoscopically either bilateral-simultaneously or unilaterally in the LVF and/or RVF. The stimuli presented bilaterally differed with respect to their degree of similarity. Whereas the patient was able to detect gross differences between stimuli presented in the left and right half-field, he was impaired at discriminating similar and identical stimuli across the half-fields. Identification by naming was correct on unilateral

Osteochondrodysplasia with rhizomelia, platyspondyly, callosal agenesis, thrombocytopenia, hydrocephalus, and hypertension.

A female infant born at term to phenotypically normal nonconsanguinous parents had hypertension, thrombocytopenia, hydrocephalus, callosal agenesis, and nonlethal rhizomelic osteochondrodysplasia. Her osteochondrodysplasia was characterized roentgenographically by shortening and metaphyseal broadening of long bones, without bowing, and by platyspondyly, with deficient ossification of dorsal and central portions of vertebral bodies. By light microscopy, the iliac crest growth plate showed expansion of the zone of chondrocyte hypertrophy and degeneration, with faulty columnar alignment, sparse v

Cerebrocortical microdysgenesis with anomalous callosal connections: a case study in the rat.

A spontaneously occurring area of cerebrocortical microdysgenesis, resembling microgyria, and having its origin during development was noted in the left auditory cortex of a rat which had received a callosal section in adult life. Adjoining sections were prepared with cresyl violet for visualization of cell bodies, and by the Fink-Heimer method for degenerating axonal terminals. The microdysgenetic region was characterized by fused molecular layers containing ectopic neurons and by abnormal cortical lamination. The architecture of terminal degeneration of callosal axons within this region was

Structural mediation of the default-mode network in children with callosal agenesis.

Agenesis of the corpus callosum is a neurodevelopmental condition characterized by the partial or complete absence of the corpus callosum, the largest white matter bundle connecting the cerebral hemispheres. The default-mode network comprises bilateral frontal, temporal, and parietal regions that exhibit correlated activity at rest. Previous studies show that individuals with agenesis of the corpus callosum show overall preserved default-mode network functional connectivity, suggesting compensatory mechanisms for maintaining bilaterally correlated activity. In this study, we aimed to explore w

First-trimester ventriculomegaly in fetuses with callosal agenesis: Cause or association?

The sonographic findings in four fetuses presenting with ventriculomegaly at first-trimester ultrasound that were subsequently diagnosed as having agenesis of the corpus callosum (ACC) are described. The diagnosis of early ventriculomegaly was suspected subjectively by identification of increased cerebrospinal fluid within the lateral ventricles and confirmed by measuring choroid plexus-to-lateral ventricle length and area ratios. Subsequent scans revealed complete ACC in two cases and partial ACC in the other two. This report adds to the increasing evidence suggesting that first-trimester ven

Heterogeneity in defining fetal corpus callosal pathology: systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal anomalies of the corpus callosum (CC) have been reported in the prenatal imaging literature since 1985, and, especially when isolated, pose challenges for both the patient and fetal medicine specialist. The purpose of this study was to review systematically the literature on prenatally diagnosed abnormalities of the CC, focusing on the terminology used to describe abnormalities other than complete agenesis of the CC, and to assess the heterogeneity of the nomenclature and definitions used. METHODS: This study was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA statement for reporting

Uncertain, Not Unimportant: Callosal Dysgenesis and Variants of Uncertain Significance in ROBO1.

Congenital anomalies affect 3% to 5% of births and remain the leading cause of infant death in the United States. As whole exome and genome sequencing are increasingly used to diagnose underlying genetic disease, the patient's clinical presentation remains the most important context for interpreting sequencing results, including frequently reported variants of uncertain significance (VUS). Classification of a variant as VUS acknowledges limits on evidence to establish whether a variant can be classified as pathogenic or benign according to the American College of Medical Genetics guidelines. Agnosia, apraxia, callosal disconnection and other specific cognitive disorders.

Cortical function deficits have long been studied by anatomoclinic correlations. Recent functional imaging studies have allowed scientists to better understand which cerebral areas and which networks are involved in cognitive function deficit. This chapter will review the current knowledge on agnosia, apraxia and callosal disconnection syndromes.
