CAMELLIA: an alignment-free pipeline integrating k-mer feature selection and supervised classification for genomic sequence subtyping.

Scalable analysis of biological sequences is essential for functional characterization, biomarker discovery, and therapeutic and vaccine development. Alignment-based pipelines often fail to capture intraspecific variation and become computationally limited on large datasets, while alignment-free methods treat each class as homogeneous, ignoring sample heterogeneity. We present CAMELLIA (Combining AlignMent-free fEature seLection cLassIficAtion), an alignment-free framework that combines feature selection with explainable machine learning for genomic sequence analysis and classification. CAMELL

Astragalin From Camellia sinensis Flowers Increases Collagen Content Alongside Autophagy-Related Mitochondrial Metabolic Changes in Caenorhabditis elegans.

Collagen, the predominant structural protein in skin, is essential for maintaining elasticity and delaying aging. With age-related collagen depletion, enhancing its biosynthesis, particularly via natural bioactive compounds, has attracted scientific and commercial attention. Here, we investigated the collagen-promoting activity of edible flowers by assessing their matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibition and collagen content change. Among 28 tested flower extracts, Camellia sinensis (CSK) exhibited the strongest MMP inhibition (>75%) and significantly increased collagen content in Caenorhabdi

Low-temperature stress modulates pollen tube growth through temperature-dependent multi-level regulatory mechanisms in Camellia sinensis.

Low temperature is a major environmental stress factor that limits male reproductive success in plants; however, the mechanistic basis of pollen responses to different degrees of low temperature stress remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the cytological, biochemical, and molecular responses of tea (Camellia sinensis) pollen grains to low-temperature stress by germinating pollen in vitro at 15, 10, and 5 °C. Although pollen germination rate and pollen tube length were reduced under all low-temperature treatments compared with the control, the underlying regulatory response

CsCBF2 contributes to cold repression of chlorophyll and carotenoid biosynthesis in albino Camellia sinensis cv. Baiye 1.

C-repeat binding factors (CsCBFs) play a pivotal role in regulating cold response in higher plants. Camellia sinensis cv. Baiye 1, a representative albino tea cultivar, has been identified as temperature-sensitive based on long-term observations by tea farmers. However, it remains unclear whether CsCBFs are involved in temperature-mediated albinism and seasonal greening in 'Baiye 1', and the mechanisms by which CBFs regulate cold responses in albino leaves are unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that CsCBF2 suppresses the seasonal greening of albino leaves by inhibiting chlorophyll and caro

Synthesis of iron oxide nanoparticles mediated by Camellia sinensis var. Assamica for Cr(VI) adsorption and detoxification.

Environment-benign synthesis of nanoparticles (NPs) are of great importance. Plant-based polyphenols (PPs) are electron donor analytes for the synthesis of metal and metal oxide NPs. This work produced and investigated iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) from PPs of tea leaves of Camellia sinensis var. assamica for Cr(VI) removal. The conditions for IONPs synthesis were using RSM CCD and found to be optimum at a time of 48 min, temperature of 26 °C, and iron precursors/leaves extract ratio (v/v) of 0.36. Further, these synthesized IONPs at a dosage of 0.75 g/L, temperature of 25 °C, and pH 2 achi

Components identification and nutritional value exploration of tea (Camellia sinensis L.) flower extract: Evidence for functional food.

Camellia sinensis L., its fresh leaves and buds are used to make tea, is an important industrial crop with a long history. However, less attention has been paid to tea flowers. Indeed, tea flower extract (TFE) is a rich source of functional molecules, but its nutritional value remains unclear. This study, from the perspective of "whole food", aimed to investigate the composition of TFE and further explore its possible health-promoting effects on cyclophosphamide-induced mice. It was found that TFE was mainly composed of carbohydrates (34.02 ± 1.42%), phenolic compounds (11.57 ± 0.14%), crude p

Interactions among chemical components of Cocoa tea (Camellia ptilophylla Chang), a naturally low caffeine-containing tea species.

In the 1980s, a novel tea species, Cocoa tea (Camellia ptilophylla Chang), was discovered in Southern China with surprisingly low caffeine content (0.2% by dry weight). Although its health promoting characteristics have been known for a while, a very limited amount of scientific research has been focused on Cocoa tea. Herein, a systematic study on Cocoa tea and its chemical components, interactions and bioactivities was performed. YD tea (Yunnan Daye tea, Camellia sinensis), a tea species with a high caffeine content (5.8% by dry weight), was used as a control. By UV-Vis spectrometry, High Per

A novel Camellia oil microemulsion significantly enhances the bioaccessibility and antioxidant activity of curcumin: a comparative study with macroemulsion.

This study compared a camellia oil-based microemulsion (CUR-ME) with a macroemulsion (CUR-MacE) of identical composition to enhance the delivery of curcumin. The CUR-ME exhibited a nanoscale droplet size (∼12 nm), low polydispersity (PDI < 0.1), and superior physical stability. During in vitro digestion, CUR-ME achieved a 2.6-fold higher bioaccessibility of curcumin (79.5%) compared to CUR-MacE (30.4%). The bioaccessible fraction from CUR-ME also demonstrated significantly stronger retention of antioxidant activity in ABTS and FRAP assays. Thermal analysis confirmed the molecular dispersion of

CsWRKY33 Integrates Immune Signalling and Metabolic Reprogramming to Enhance Tea Plant Resistance Against Colletotrichum camelliae.

Tea anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum camelliae, poses a serious threat to tea yield and quality. While certain transcription factors have been implicated in stress responses, the core transcriptional networks governing immunity in tea plants remain largely elusive. In this study, we identify CsWRKY33 as a central regulator that orchestrates immune responses and metabolic reprogramming during C. camelliae infection in tea plants. Transcriptome analysis revealed that CsWRKY33 is significantly induced upon fungal challenge and functions downstream of both pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and
