Advances in the Anatomy, Histology, and Embryology of the Dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) Brain and Spinal Cord.

The dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) represents a remarkable model of physiological and anatomical adaptation to extreme environments. While many researchers have focused on its unique metabolic and water-conserving abilities, the neuroscience underlying these adaptations are noticeable unexplored. This study reviews the latest findings in the anatomy, histology, and embryology of the dromedary nervous system. It highlights the gross and comparative neuroanatomy, emphasizing distinctive features of the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems, including the complex cerebral vasculature

Histological study on the prenatal development of compartment 1 of the stomach of the camel (Camelus dromedarius).

BACKGROUND: The largest portion of the dromedary camel's stomach, known as Compartment 1, plays a vital role in the microbial fermentation of ingested food. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the prenatal development of Compartment 1 in camel fetuses during the three gestational trimesters. METHODS: Stomach samples were collected from 21 healthy camel fetuses of both sexes at various gestational ages (79-390 days). The samples were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and histologically examined. RESULTS: The primitive stomach wall consisted of three layers in the early first trimester (79 days

Immunohistochemical and Ultrastructural Features of the Seasonal Changes in the Epididymal Epithelium of Camel (Camelus dromedarius).

In order to evaluate the influence of reproductive activity on the functional role of the epididymal epithelium in the Egyptian dromedary camel, Connexin-43 (Cx-43), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and androgen receptor (AR) immunoreactivity in the epididymal epithelium and the fine structure of the principal, dark, basal, apical, and halo cells were investigated. The secretory activity of the principal cells was amplified in the breeding season, while its endocytotic function became more active in the nonbreeding season. This was evidenced by punctate strong immunoreactive signals

Sperm macrocephaly syndrome in the ostrich Struthio camelus: morphological characteristics and implications for motility.

Sperm macrocephaly syndrome (SMS) is characterised by a high percentage of spermatozoa with enlarged heads and multiple tails, and is related to infertility. Although this multiple sperm defect has been described in other mammalian species, little is known about this anomaly in birds. Morphological examination of semen from nine South African black ostriches (Struthio camelus var. domesticus) involved in an AI trial revealed the variable presence of spermatozoa with large heads and multiple tails. Ultrastructural features of the defect were similar to those reported in mammals except that the

An update on semen collection, preservation and artificial insemination in the dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius).

Artificial insemination (AI) in domestic animals is an important tool to maximise the use of genetically superior males and thereby insure rapid genetic progress. However, the application of AI in camelids has been hindered by the difficulties involved in collecting, as well as handling the semen due to the viscous nature of the seminal plasma. This review describes the challenges of semen collection and discusses the role of seminal plasma as well as the reasons for the viscosity and how to liquefy it so that ejaculates can be more accurately evaluated. It also reports on the use of various e

Seasonal plasticity of the pituitary pars intermedia of the one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius).

The pituitary pars intermedia of Camelus dromedarius is well developed and completely surrounds the pars nervosa. Two major groups of cells are present: endocrine (ec) and glial-like cells (glc). The ec group is composed of three morphologically distinct cell types. Type I, or polyhedral light cells (LC-I) and type II, or polyhedral dark cells (DC-II), have secretory granules of heterogeneous electron density whose size ranges from 170 to 300nm. Type III cells are elongated with homogeneous electron-dense secretory granules of 80-200nm. The glc make up an organized network, form follicles in t

Ankyloglossia and its surgical correction by frenuloplasty in a she-camel calf (Camelus dromedarius).

A rare case of ankyloglossia in a one-humped camel and its successful surgical correction by horizontal to vertical frenuloplasty is reported. Seven-month-old she-camel calf, with a history of excessive salivation and inability to chew and swallow hay, was referred to Al Qattara veterinary hospital. Solid food was regurgitated, whereas milk and water could be swallowed. On examination; the animal could not protrude its tongue which was attached by a thin tissue band between the ventral surface of the tongue and the floor of the oral cavity. The tissue band was corrected by frenuloplasty and th

Macroscopic features of the venous drainage of the reproductive system of the male ostrich (Struthio camelus).

The macroscopic features of the venous drainage of the reproductive system of the male ostrich were studied in six pre-pubertal and three sexually mature and active birds. Each testis was drained by one to four testicular veins. The right testicular veins drained the right testis and epididymis and its appendix to the caudal vena cava and to the right common iliac vein, whereas the left testicular veins drained the left testis and epididymis and its appendix exclusively to the left common iliac vein. A number of variations in the drainage pattern based on the point of entry and number of testi

Macroscopic features of the arterial supply to the reproductive system of the male ostrich (Struthio camelus).

The macroscopic features of the arterial supply to the reproductive system of the male ostrich was studied in 16 pre-pubertal and eight sexually mature and active birds. The left and right cranial renal arteries arise from the aorta, between the cranial divisions of the kidneys. These vessels supply the cranial divisions of the kidneys, the testes, the epididymides and the cranial segments of the ducti deferentia. Accessory testicular arteries which arise directly from the aorta are present in 45.8% of the specimens. They supply the testes and cranial parts of the ducti deferentia. They are va

Morphological and histological study of the ostrich (Struthio Camelus L.) liver and biliary system.

The peculiarity of the digestive system of the ostrich (Struthio Camelus L.), which is characterized by the continuous production of bile, led us to undertake macroscopical and histological studies of the liver and its biliary system, since very little bibliographic data exist on the subject. For this purpose we observed the organs of male and female ostriches 16-18 months of age, in situ, in order to describe their location, relationships and morphology. Samples of the liver were processed for observation by light microscopy; samples of the hepatoenteric duct were processed for observation by

Hydatidosis in camels (Camelus dromedarius) and their potential role in the epidemiology of Echinococcus granulosus in Iran.

Hydatid cysts were recovered from 35.2% (233/661) of camels (Camelus dromedarius) slaughtered in five different regions of Iran. The degree of prevalence between males (34.4%) and females (36.6%) was not statistically significant. The highest rate of infection (59.3%) was found in the Isfahan region (in the central part of Iran) while the lowest (25.7%) was found in Kerman province. The organ distribution of cysts was 49.4% in lungs alone, 30.0% in both liver and lungs, 14.6% in liver only and 6.0% in other organs. Therefore, the lungs were the predominant sites of the hydatid cyst. The range

Assessment of the pathogenicity of an emu-origin influenza A H5 virus in ostriches (Struthio camelus).

Ostriches were inoculated with a laboratory-derived highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus of emu origin, A/emu/TX/39924/93 (H5N2) clone c1B. The aim of this study was to evaluate the pathogenicity of this isolate for ostriches and assess the ability of routine virological and serological tests to detect infection. Avian influenza virus (AIV) was isolated from cloacal and tracheal swabs from 2 to 12 days post-infection. AIV was also isolated from brain, thymus, eyelid, spleen, ovary/testis, liver, air sac, proventriculum, duodenum, caecal tonsil, heart, pancreas, kidney, nasal gland an

Retrospective study on an unusual form of ovario-bursal pathology in the camel (Camelus dromedarius).

A peculiar form of ovarian bursa pathology, called hydrobursitis, is described in the dromedary camel. This malformation is characterized by a collection of fluid within the ovarian bursa with encapsulation of the ovary. Retrospective study of all diagnosed cases in our laboratory shows that this malformation is responsible for reduced reproductive performance due to abortion, infertility and embryonic death. Hydrobursitis was diagnosed in 33 of 355 animals examined. The incidence of this lesion was higher in animals that aborted (9/24) or were barren for more than 2 years (13/37). Diagnosis b

[A new case of Mycobacterium bovis pulmonary tuberculosis in the dromedary (Camelus dromedarius) in Mauritania].

A case of pulmonary tuberculosis is described in a dromedary from Nouakchott (Mauritania). Gross lesions affected pulmonary parenchyma, diaphragmatic pleura, pericardium and regional lymph nodes: caseo-calcified nodules, miliary tubercles and haemorrhagic "pendeloques". Microscopically lesions were characterised by granulomatous tissue, epithelioid cells, necrotic material in the centre. No Langhans giant cells were seen. Mycobacterium bovis was isolated from these samples.

Evaluation of enzyme immunoassays in the diagnosis of camel (Camelus dromedarius) trypanosomiasis: a preliminary investigation.

Three enzyme immunoassays were used for the serodiagnosis of Trypanosoma evansi in camels in the Sudan in order to evaluate their ability to discriminate between infected and non-infected animals. Two assays were used for the detection of trypanosomal antibodies, one using specific anti-camel IgG conjugate and another using a non-specific Protein A conjugate. The third assay detected the presence of trypanosomal antigens using anti-T. evansi antibodies in a double antibody sandwich assay. Inspection of the frequency distribution of assay results suggested that the ELISA for circulating trypano

The structure and hormone content of the endocrine pancreas of the one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius).

Little is known of the blood sugar regulation in the camel and the morphology and function of its endocrine pancreas. The present paper describes the light microscopic structure and hormone content of the endocrine pancreas of the one-humped camel. Staining of pancreatic sections with haematoxylin-eosin or aldehyde-fuchsin showed numerous islets evenly distributed in all parts of the pancreas. Immunocytochemical staining for insulin or glucagon indicated that islets were predominantly composed of centrally located B-cells, surrounded by a peripheral rim of A-cells. Corresponding stainings for

Serosurvey of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever Virus in dromedary camels (Camelus dromedarius) in Egypt.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is recognized as one of the most severe zoonotic viruses, marked by gastrointestinal disturbances and hemorrhagic symptoms in its more severe forms. Transmission occurs mainly through ticks of the genus Hyalomma or through contact with infected animal tissues. A wide range of animals can be asymptomatically infected, and the presence of antibodies against CCHFV in these animals poses a significant risk to individuals who are in close contact with livestock. Globally, research on CCHFV is scarce, and this is particularly true in the case of Egypt. T
