Little is known about pain among long-term adult survivors of childhood cancers. The study investigated pain prevalence in this population compared with sibling controls and examined pain-related risk factors. Three self-reported pain outcomes including pain conditions, prescription analgesics used, and pain attributed to cancer and treatment were assessed among 10,397 cancer survivors and 3034 sibling controls from the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study. Pain conditions (pain/abnormal sensation, migraines, and other headaches) were reported by 12.3%, 15.5%, and 20.5% of survivors, respectively;

BACKGROUND: Little is known on how informal caregiver burden may influence outcomes in care recipients. We examined how much caregiver burden influences survivors' quality of life (QoL) in a cohort of Black prostate cancer survivors, an underrepresented population in survivorship research.
METHODS: We included a convenience sample of 307 prostate cancer survivor-caregiver dyads in the Detroit Research on Cancer Survivors cohort. Caregivers reported their caregiving burden and involvement level. Survivors completed annual surveys (across 4 years) on emotional, social, functional, physical, and

BackgroundManagers are considered to be main stakeholders in the return to work (RTW) of cancer survivors. However, the perspectives of cancer survivors and managers differ on what managerial actions should be taken during the RTW of cancer survivors. This difference might put effective collaboration and successful RTW at risk. Therefore, this study aims to reach consensus among managers and cancer survivors on the managerial actions to be taken during the four different RTW phases of cancer survivors (i.e., Disclosure, Treatment, RTW plan, Actual RTW).MethodsThe Technique for Research of Info

PURPOSE: Childhood cancer survivors have an increased risk of secondary sarcomas. To better identify those at risk, the relationship between therapeutic dose of chemotherapy and radiation and secondary sarcoma should be quantified.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: We conducted a nested case-control study of secondary sarcomas (105 cases, 422 matched controls) in a cohort of 14,372 childhood cancer survivors. Radiation dose at the second malignant neoplasm (SMN) site and use of chemotherapy were estimated from detailed review of medical records. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals were estima

IMPORTANCE: Cancer survivorship in the US is increasing greatly, and cancer survivors are at increased risk of developing second primary cancers, with lung cancer being the most common. However, data on lung cancer screening (LCS) with low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) in cancer survivors are lacking.
OBJECTIVE: To compare characteristics, LDCT interpretation, lung cancer detection rate (CDR), and all-cause mortality rate among cancer survivors vs individuals without prior cancer undergoing LCS.

ObjectiveCancer incidence and mortality statistics provide limited insight regarding the cancer survivor population and its needs. Cancer prevalence statistics enumerate cancer survivors--those currently living with cancer. Commonly used limited-duration prevalence (LDP) methods yield biased estimates of the number of survivors. National estimates may not allow sufficient granularity to inform local survivorship programs. In this study, complete prevalence (CP) methods are applied to actual North Carolina Central Cancer Registry (NCCCR) data to generate better, more informative prevalence esti

Native Americans experience cancer-related health disparities. Yet, little is known about the current cancer experience in one of the largest Native American tribe, Navajo. A qualitative study of among Navajo cancer survivors, in which focus groups and individual interviews included questions related to perceptions of cancer causes, prevention, and treatment, allowed us to evaluate several aspects of the cancer experience from the Navajo perspective. An experienced, bilingual facilitator led the discussions using a standardized guide. Discussions were audio-recorded, documented by field notes,

Long-term adverse health conditions, including secondary malignant neoplasms, are common in childhood cancer survivors. Although mortality attributable to secondary malignancies declined over the past decades, the risk for developing a solid secondary malignant neoplasm did not. Endocrine-related malignancies are among the most common secondary malignant neoplasms observed in childhood cancer survivors. In this systematic review, we describe risk factors for secondary malignant neoplasms of the breast and thyroid, since these are the most common secondary endocrine-related malignancies in chil

Patients with premenopausal breast cancer (preBC) usually have long-term survivorship. However, less is known about the risk pattern of subsequent primary cancer (SPC) and noncancer diseases among them. Here, this study aimed to evaluate the risk of developing SPCs and mortality among preBC survivors. In this population-based, retrospective cohort study, 5-year preBC survivors diagnosed at age 20-59 years during 1992-2014, in the 11 Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Result registries were included. Standardized incidence ratio (SIR) and standardized mortality ratio (SMR) were estimated for SP

The overall 5-year relative survival rate for all cancers combined is now 68%, and there are over 16.9 million survivors in the United States. Evidence from laboratory and observational studies suggests that factors such as diet, physical activity, and obesity may affect risk for recurrence and overall survival after a cancer diagnosis. The purpose of this American Cancer Society guideline is to provide evidence-based, cancer-specific recommendations for anthropometric parameters, physical activity, diet, and alcohol intake for reducing recurrence and cancer-specific and overall mortality. PURPOSE: Lung cancer is common and lethal, and can occur in survivors of previous cancers. We sought to describe the incidence and mortality attributable to second primary lung cancers (SPLC) among survivors of other cancers, and to identify survivors at highest risk.
METHODS: We identified adults diagnosed with a localized malignancy from non-pulmonary cancer sites from surveillance, epidemiology, and end results (SEER) data from 1992 to 2008. We explored factors associated with the incidence and death from SPLC using bivariable and multivariable models. Finally, we compared standardized inc
