The role of galectin-3 in phagocytosis of Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis by human neutrophils.

Candida albicans causes the majority of invasive candidiasis in immunocompromised adults while Candida parapsilosis is a leading cause of neonatal candidiasis. While much work has focused on how the immune system recognizes and responds to C. albicans, less is known about host interaction with C. parapsilosis. This study investigates the human neutrophil phagocytic response to these species. Neutrophils underwent phagocytosis of C. parapsilosis yeast and C. albicans hyphae much more efficiently than C. albicans yeast. Treatment of neutrophils with a galectin-3 (gal3) blocking antibody inhibite

Candida albicans and non-Candida albicans fungemia in an institutional hospital during a decade.

Since the outcomes of patients with candidemia is poor and Candida spp. with increased resistance to antifungal therapy may be associated with these results, the emergence of these blood infections caused by non-C. albicans Candida spp. was explored prospectively over a two-year period (2009-2010). Candidemia was defined as the recovery of Candida spp. in culture from a patient's blood sample. The in vitro susceptibility of each isolate to amphotericin B, caspofungin, fluconazole and voriconazole was determined. In addition, characteristics of patients and outcomes were investigated in real-ti

A case of Candida krusei peritonitis secondary to duodenal perforation due to Candida duodenitis.

A case of a 62-year-old man with Candida krusei peritonitis secondary to duodenal perforation due to Candida duodenitis that was successfully treated with a 14-day course of caspofungin is reported. The potential role of Candida infection in the pathogenesis of peptic ulcers and duodenal perforation is considered. If this role is confirmed, antifungal treatment should be included in the therapeutic armamentarium of peptic disease.

Mixed Candida albicans and Candida glabrata populations associated with the pathogenesis of denture stomatitis.

INTRODUCTION: Oral yeasts are an important component of the resident microbial ecology of the oral cavity, but they are also associated with various forms of oral candidosis, such as denture stomatitis. Although Candida albicans is the predominant oral fungal pathogen, other species may also play an integral role in pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to examine the mycological ecology in patients with denture stomatitis, using an improved sampling technique, to determine whether species diversity and species quantity were related to oral pathology. METHODS: Thirty-seven patients attendin

Comparison of the epidemiology, drug resistance mechanisms, and virulence of Candida dubliniensis and Candida albicans.

Candida dubliniensis is a pathogenic yeast species that was first identified as a distinct taxon in 1995. Epidemiological studies have shown that C. dubliniensis is prevalent throughout the world and that it is primarily associated with oral carriage and oropharyngeal infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients. However, unlike Candida albicans, C. dubliniensis is rarely found in the oral microflora of normal healthy individuals and is responsible for as few as 2% of cases of candidemia (compared to approximately 65% for C.

Potent Antifungal Activity of Penta-O-galloyl-β-d-Glucose against Drug-Resistant Candida albicans, Candida auris, and Other Non-albicans Candida Species.

Among fungal pathogens, infections by drug-resistant Candida species continue to pose a major challenge to healthcare. This study aimed to evaluate the activity of the bioactive natural product, penta-O-galloyl-β-d-glucose (PGG) against multidrug-resistant (MDR) Candida albicans, MDR Candida auris, and other MDR non-albicans Candida species. Here, we show that PGG has a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 0.25-8 μg mL-1 (0.265-8.5 μM) against three clinical strains of C. auris and a MIC of 0.25-4 μg mL-1 (0.265-4.25 μM) against a panel of other MDR Candida species. Our cytotoxicity studi

Presumed Candida tropicalis endogenous endophthalmitis with multifocal systemic Candida albicans abscesses: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Endophthalmitis is a kind of infectious diseases that seriously threatens vision; Endogenous fungal endophthalmitis (EFE) accounts for 2% to 8% of all endophthalmitis, and is rare and often misdiagnosed in clinical practice. Different strains of Candida may have organ orientation differences, and mixed infections have also been reported in literature. CASE REPORT: A 72 year old male patient was admitted to the hospital due to fever for 5 months and decreased vision in both eyes. The patient's left vitreous fluid underwent metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS), which reveal

Drug susceptibility of Candida albicans and non-albicans Candida species isolated from ornamental birds.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of Candida infections, especially by non-albicans Candida species, has led to excessive use of antifungal drugs, resulting in the transfer of resistance and increased minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) among Candida isolates. This study aimed to investigate the susceptibility of clinical Candida isolates of ornamental birds to three antifungal drugs: amphotericin B, caspofungin, and itraconazole. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Totally 126 samples were analyzed, from which 116 distinct colonies were cultured. Of these, 26 were identified as Candida spp., c

Candidemia in Türkiye demonstrates nationwide predominance of non-albicans Candida and Candida auris detection.

In recent years, evolving patterns in candidemia epidemiology, including increasing proportions of non-albicans Candida (NAC) species and the emergence of Candida auris, have been reported. We aimed to characterize contemporary candidemia epidemiology in Turkey and to assess the association between guideline adherence and 30-day mortality. In this nationwide retrospective multicenter cohort study, adult patients with blood culture-confirmed candidemia diagnosed between January 2022 and December 2023 in 20 hospitals were included. Species identification was standardized and confirmed using MALD

Recent Outbreaks, Resistance Trends, and Control Measures in Candida auris and Candida glabrata Infections.

The global rise in multidrug-resistant (MDR) fungal pathogens has positioned Candida auris and Candida glabrata as major threats to public health. In recent years, these pathogens have increasingly been reported beyond traditional hospital settings, including neonatal intensive care units, long-term care facilities, oncology wards, and post-pandemic critical care environments. International surveillance bodies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and regional monitoring netwo

Contribution of N-Linked Mannosylation Pathway to Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis Biofilm Formation.

BACKGROUND: Mycoses are a growing threat to human health, and systemic candidiasis caused by Candida parapsilosis and Candida tropicalis is frequent in immunocompromised patients. Biofilm formation is a virulence factor found in these organisms, as sessile cells adhere to surfaces, the stratification and production of extracellular matrix provides protection and resistance to antifungal drugs. Previous evidence indicated that the N-linked mannosylation pathway is relevant to C. albicans biofilms, but its contribution to other species remains unknown. METHODS: C. parapsilosis and C. tropicalis

The Emerging Uncommon Non-Albicans Candida: Candida Parapsilosis Peritonitis in a Peritoneal Dialysis Patient.

Candida parapsilosis can cause invasive fungal infection which is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Timely management of this uncommon Candida pathogen is essential to prevent peritoneal dialysis patients from succumbing to the infectious complications of peritonitis related to it. We present a 75-year-old Caucasian female with end-stage renal disease, on peritoneal dialysis at home, who presented with peritonitis features found to be related to this rare Candida species. She was treated with four weeks course of oral fluconazole and was switched to incenter hemodialysis. Ph

Coaggregation of Candida albicans, Actinomyces naeslundii and Streptococcus mutans is Candida albicans strain dependent.

Microbial interactions are necessarily associated with the development of polymicrobial oral biofilms. The objective of this study was to determine the coaggregation of eight strains of Candida albicans with Actinomyces naeslundii and Streptococcus mutans. In autoaggregation assays, C. albicans strains were grown in RPMI-1640 and artificial saliva medium (ASM) whereas bacteria were grown in heart infusion broth. C. albicans, A. naeslundii and S. mutans were suspended to give 10(6), 10(7) and 10(8) cells mL(-1) respectively, in coaggregation buffer followed by a 1 h incubation. The absorbance d

[Prevalence of Candida albicans and Candida non-albicans in clinical samples during 1999-2001].

The importance of epidemiological monitoring of yeasts involved in pathologic processes is unquestionable due to the increase of these infections over the last decade, the changes observed in species causing candidiasis, and empirical antifungal treatment. At the Mycology Center, 1006 isolates from a wide range of clinical samples were studied during 1999-2001. Candida albicans (40.3%) was the most isolated species, although, the Candida no albicans species with 54.9% showed the major prevalence. In blood cultures Candida parapsilosis (34.9%), C. albicans (30.2%) and C. tropicalis (25.6%) were

Direct isolation of Candida spp. from blood cultures on the chromogenic medium CHROMagar Candida.

CHROMagar Candida is a selective and differential chromogenic medium that has been shown to be useful for identification of Candida albicans, Candida krusei, Candida tropicalis, and perhaps Candida glabrata. Colony morphology and color have been well defined when CHROMagar Candida has been used to isolate yeast directly from clinical specimens, including stool, urine, respiratory, vaginal, oropharyngeal, and esophageal sources. Direct isolation of yeast on CHROMagar Candida from blood cultures has not been evaluated. We evaluated whether the color and colony characteristics produced by Candida

[Candida dubliniensis studies and isolation of Candida types in oropharyngeal specimens from oncologic patients].

Fungal opportunistic infections, and in particular those caused by the various Candida species, have gained considerable significance as a cause of morbidity and, often, mortality. Although Candida albicans remains to be the most frequently isolated fungal species as an opportunistic oral pathogen, other yeast species are often identified in immunocompromised patients. C. dubliniensis, the recently described species, has been recovered primarily from oropharyngeal candidasis in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-infected patients. C. dubliniensis shares many phenotypic characteristics with, an

Enhancing ICU Candida spp. surveillance: a cost-effective approach focused on Candida auris detection.

INTRODUCTION: Candida auris is an emerging pathogen that represents a worldwide health problem due to its global expansion, multidrug resistance, and difficult laboratory identification. Among the risk factors for colonization/infection by C. auris, a stay in an intensive care unit (ICU) stands out. This prospective multicenter study aimed to monitor the trend of the local epidemiology of Candida spp. and unveil the prevalence of C. auris. METHODS: From 2020 to 2022, axillar/inguinal swabs were collected from adult patients at three points: upon admission (D1) and on the fifth (D5) and eighth

Candida haemulonii Complex and Candida auris: Biology, Virulence Factors, Immune Response, and Multidrug Resistance.

There is worldwide concern about the constant increase in infections caused by Candida species that are multiresistant to antifungal drugs. The most common candidiasis is caused by Candida albicans, however, the species of the Candida haemulonii complex and Candida auris are emerging opportunistic pathogens, which isolation from clinical samples has significantly increased in the past years. The special interest in the study of these species lies in their ability to evade the action of antifungal drugs, such as amphotericin B, azoles, and echinocandins. In addition, the phenotypic changes of t

Comparative Molecular and Immunoregulatory Analysis of Extracellular Vesicles from Candida albicans and Candida auris.

Candida auris is a recently described multidrug-resistant pathogenic fungus that is increasingly responsible for health care-associated outbreaks across the world. Bloodstream infections of this fungus cause death in up to 70% of cases. Aggravating this scenario, the disease-promoting mechanisms of C. auris are poorly understood. Fungi release extracellular vesicles (EVs) that carry a broad range of molecules, including proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, pigments, and RNA, many of which are virulence factors. Here, we carried out a comparative molecular characterization of C. auris and Candida a
