Effect of the Carbon-Curved Cane Use on Gait in Chronic Stroke-Induced Hemiplegia: A Prospective Single-Case Study.

Background: Canes are used by patients with hemiplegia to improve gait and ambulation, but the effects of different types of canes remain unclear. Therefore, this study compared the effectiveness of a newly developed carbon-curved cane (CC-C) with that of a conventional cane using gait analysis of patients with chronic stroke-induced hemiplegia. Case: A 41-year-old male was diagnosed with cardiogenic cerebral infarction 3 years ago. The patient is independent in his activities of daily living and participates alone in the community using a single-point cane (SP-C). This study utilized an AB de

A successful management of Candy Cane syndrome post Roux-en-Y gastric bypass: a rare case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Candy Cane syndrome (CCS) is a rare condition in which the proximal gastrojejunal attachment's afferent blind limb is elongated. This can lead to different symptoms, including nausea and vomiting, with less commonly described reflux and regurgitation symptoms. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old female presented with a chronic complaint of postprandial pain, discomfort, and reflux lasting for about 2 years after a previous Roux-en-y gastric bypass (RYGB) surgery. Upper endoscopy was done and raised suspicion for CCS. The patient underwent an exploratory laparoscopy,

Effects of polyphenols in non-centrifugal cane sugar on saliva secretion: in vitro and in vivo experiments and a randomized controlled trial.

This study examined the bioactivities and mechanisms of the non-centrifugal cane sugar polyphenols saponarin, schaftoside, and isoschaftoside in the salivary gland and their effects on salivation. In acute isolated C57BL/6N mouse submandibular gland cells, these polyphenols led to a higher increase in intracellular calcium after stimulation with the muscarinic agonist carbachol. Stimulation of these cells with polyphenols enhanced ATP production, aquaporin-5 translocation to the plasma membrane and eliminated intracellular reactive oxygen species generated by H2O2. In addition, phosphorylation

Effects of Handrail and Cane Support on Energy Cost of Walking in People With Different Levels and Causes of Lower Limb Amputation.

OBJECTIVE: The energy cost of walking with a lower limb prosthesis is higher than able-bodied walking and depends on both cause and level of amputation. This increase might partly be related to problems with balance control. In this study we investigated to what extent energy cost can be reduced by providing support through a handrail or cane and how this depends on level and cause of amputation. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental study. SETTING: Rehabilitation gait laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty-six people with a lower limb amputation were included: 9 with vascular and 17 with nonvascular causes

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of a mixture of fatty acids isolated and purified from sugar cane wax oil.

The anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of FAM, a defined mixture of fatty acids isolated from sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.), was evaluated. Oral administration of this mixture showed anti-inflammatory activity in the cotton pellet granuloma assay and in the carrageenin-induced pleurisy test, both in rats, as well as in the peritoneal capillary permeability test in mice. In addition, FAM showed analgesic properties in the hot-plate model and in the acetic acid-induced writhings test, both in mice. In conclusion, these results provide evidence on the potential usefulness of the mixt

Synthesis of Hyper-cross-linked Nonpolar Polystyrene Divinylbenzene Resins by Pendent Vinyl Groups and Application to the Decolorization of Cane Molasses.

Cane molasses is a by-product of sugar industry. It is widely used in fermentation field, but pigment compounds affect its further application. In this study, nonpolar hyper-cross-linked adsorption resins (HCARs) were synthesized by pendent vinyl groups cross-linking reaction, and were applied to decolorization of molasses. The correlation between the structure and the decolorization performance of HCARs was studied, and the results showed that the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area and the pore volume of the resin significantly increased to 574.4 m2·g-1 and 1.40 cm3·g-1 after the Fried

Intestinal helminth parasites of greater cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus) sold at Omagwa BushmeatMarket, Omagwa, Rivers State, Nigeria.

Greater cane rats (Thryonomys swinderianus) are important sources of bushmeat in southern Nigeria. Here, we collected and examined intestinal helminth parasites of these rats sold at Omagwa bushmeat market, Rivers State, Nigeria. Twelve intestinal tracts of T. swinderianus were purchased from December, 2020 to February, 2021, and transported to the laboratory for examination. Each sample was incised and its contents examined in 0.9% normal saline solution. Parasites encountered were washed in same solution, fixed in 70% ethanol and subsequently identified using taxonomical keys. Prevalence of

Urinary corticosterone responses to capture and toe-clipping in the cane toad (Rhinella marina) indicate that toe-clipping is a stressor for amphibians.

Toe-clipping, the removal of one or more toes, is a common method used to individually mark free-living animals. Whilst this method is widely used in studies of amphibians, the appropriateness of the method, and its potential detrimental effects have been the subject of debate. Here, we provide for the first time, evidence that toe-clipping is a stressor in a wild amphibian. We measured urinary corticosterone responses of male cane toads (Rhinella marina) to capture and handling only, and to toe-clipping under field conditions. Urinary testosterone concentrations and white blood cell proportio

Assessment of antioxidant activity of cane brown sugars by ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging assays: determination of their polyphenolic and volatile constituents.

Seven cane brown sugars (four from La Réunion, two from Mauritius, and one from France) were investigated for their polyphenol content and volatile composition in relation to their free radical scavenging capacity determined by ABTS and DPPH assays. The thin layer coated on the sugar crystal was extracted by Soxhlet extractor with dichloromethane. The volatile compounds of brown sugars were studied by GC-MS, and 43 compounds were identified. The total phenolic content of brown sugars was determined according to the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Phenolic compounds were quantified in the brown sugar e

Effect of a 3-week program of cane training and use on gait of individuals with Parkinson's disease: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Although studies examining the immediate effects of cane use in individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) have reported negative outcomes, the efficacy and safety of structured training programs for assistive device use remain to be investigated. Furthermore, the limited evidence regarding patient-reported outcomes hinders the implementation of patient-centered, evidence-based practices in prescribing assistive devices for this population. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of cane training and use on gait speed (primary outcome), gait confidence, cadence, step length, functio

Rapid identification of primary constituents in parotoid gland secretions of the Australian cane toad using HPLC/MS-Q-TOF.

Toad parotoid gland secretion or toad venom has in recent years been increasingly shown to possess potentially beneficial pharmacological effects; this speculation has drawn much interest centred on elucidating the chemical basis of its multimodal effects. For this purpose, we explored the use of a rapid and accurate analysis method for systemic investigation of the parotoid gland chemistry, when extracted from Australian cane toads. Full-scan data of cane toad venom extract was acquired using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with a hybrid quadrupole-time of flight mass spectrome

Developmental assays using invasive cane toads, Rhinella marina, reveal safety concerns of a common formulation of the rice herbicide, butachlor.

Identifying the adverse impacts of pesticide exposure is essential to guide regulations that are protective of wildlife and human health. Within rice ecosystems, amphibians are valuable indicators because pesticide applications coincide with sensitive reproductive and developmental life stages. We conducted two experiments using wild cane toads (Rhinella marina) to test 1) whether environmentally relevant exposure to a commercial formulation of butachlor, an acetanilide herbicide used extensively in rice, affects amphibian development and 2) whether cane toad tadpoles are capable of acclimatiz

Experimental infection of the cane mouse Zygodontomys brevicauda (family Muridae) with guanarito virus (Arenaviridae), the etiologic agent of Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever.

Chronic infections in specific rodents appear to be crucial to the long-term persistence of arenaviruses in nature. The cane mouse, Zygodontomys brevicauda, is a natural host of Guanarito virus (family Arenaviridae), the etiologic agent of Venezuelan hemorrhagic fever. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the natural history of Guanarito virus infection in Z. brevicauda. Thirty-nine laboratory-reared cane mice each were inoculated subcutaneously with 3.0 log10 plaque-forming units of the Guanarito virus prototype strain INH-95551. No lethality was associated with infection in any animal,

Influence of Cannula Design on Lipoaspirate Architecture: A Double-Blind, Split-Body Trial Comparing Basket, Accelerator, and Candy Cane Cannulas.

BACKGROUND: Autologous fat grafting is widely used in reconstructive and esthetic surgery; however, variability in graft retention remains a major limitation. Cannula design may influence the mechanical trauma inflicted during fat harvesting, potentially affecting adipocyte architecture and tissue integrity. This study aimed to evaluate the macroscopic and histologic characteristics of adipose tissue harvested using three different suction cannulas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A double-blind, non-randomized, split-body clinical trial was conducted. Adipose tissue was harvested from the abdominal r

Anopheles larval habitats seasonality and environmental factors affecting larval abundance and distribution in Arjo-Didessa sugar cane plantation, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Water resource development projects are essential for increasing agricultural productivity and ensuring food security. However, these activities require the modification of pre-existing environmental settings, which may alter mosquito larval habitat availability and seasonality. The intensive utilization of current adult vector control tools results in insecticide resistance among the main vectors. When coupled with behavioural resistances, a shift in malaria vector feeding and resting behaviours could compromise the effectiveness of the current adult vector control strategies. Thu

Surgical Management of Candy Cane Syndrome After Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass: A Case Report Highlighting Diagnostic and Therapeutic Considerations.

Candy cane syndrome (CCS) is a rare complication of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, caused by a redundant blind afferent limb at the gastrojejunostomy anastomosis. It typically presents with persistent postprandial abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting, significantly impacting quality of life. We report the case of a 39-year-old woman who developed chronic upper abdominal discomfort two years after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass. Symptoms persisted despite conservative management, and CCS was ultimately identified as the underlying cause. Surgical resection of the redundant limb was performed, resulting in

Mini laparotomy for candy cane syndrome at the jejunojejunostomy after a second Roux Y Gastric bypass with multiple surgical history: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Candy cane syndrome (CCS) is a rare and underreported complication, seldom occurring after bariatric surgeries, especially, the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) type. It refers to an excessively long-blind end of the alimentary limb, usually at the gastrojejunal (GJ) junction, and to a lesser extent, can occur at the jejunojejunal (JJ) junction, that may cause symptoms including abdominal pain, regurgitation, nausea, vomiting and reflux. However, its diagnosis can be challenging and misleading. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 34-year-old woman with a multiple past surgical history presented wi
