Mental health treatment use among cannabis users aged 50+: Associations with cannabis use characteristics.

BACKGROUND: This study examined associations of mental health treatment use and perceived treatment need with cannabis use characteristics (medical vs. nonmedical use, initiation age, use frequency, and cannabis use disorder) among past-year cannabis users aged 50+. METHODS: Data came from the 2015-2019 National Survey of Drug Use and Health (N = 44,007). After comparing past-year cannabis users with nonusers and nonmedical users with medical users on sociodemographic and health-related factors, the research questions were examined with logistic regression models. RESULTS: In addition to men

Method of Use Matters: Cannabis Product Type and Polysubstance Use Among Adult Cannabis Users.

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that cannabis users have higher odds of engaging in polysubstance use compared to non-cannabis users. More recent research has also examined cannabis product types and multimodal cannabis use following legalization. However, it remains unclear whether patterns of polysubstance use differ across different cannabis product types and multimodal use. METHODS: This study uses a large, nationally representative sample of adult cannabis users from the 2023 National Survey of Drug Use and Health to examine how eight forms of cannabis use (smoking, vaping, eating

Fatal Cannabis-Associated Cardiovascular Toxicity Following High-Potency Cannabis Use: An Integrated Clinicopathologic Investigation.

Cannabis has been associated with acute cardiovascular complications, including ventricular arrhythmias and myocardial infarction, particularly in otherwise healthy young adults. We report the death of a 28-year-old man who suffered from witnessed ventricular fibrillation while smoking a legally purchased cannabis product labeled as containing 29.9% Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC). Sustained return of spontaneous circulation was achieved after ∼50 minutes of resuscitation. Despite intensive care, severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy developed, and life support was withdrawn 6 days later. Se

Resting state functional connectivity in dependent cannabis users: The moderating role of cannabis attitudes.

BACKGROUND: The global increase in lenient cannabis policy has been paralleled by reduced harm perception, which has been associated with cannabis use initiation and persistent use. However, it is unclear how cannabis attitudes might affect the brain processes underlying cannabis use. METHODS: Resting state functional connectivity (RSFC) within and between the executive control network (ECN), salience network (SN), and default mode network (DMN) was assessed in 110 near-daily cannabis users with cannabis use disorder (CUD) and 79 controls from The Netherlands and Texas, USA. Participants comp

Cannabis use regimens in trauma-exposed individuals: Associations with cannabis use quantity and frequency.

People with trauma histories have an increased odds of cannabis use. Little is known about the frequency or consequences of different cannabis use regimens in cannabis users with trauma histories. Individuals with anxiety disorders tend to administer benzodiazepines in a pro re nata (PRN; i.e., as needed) as opposed to regularly scheduled (RS, e.g., twice daily [BID], three times daily [TID]) manner. Although physicians tend to prescribe benzodiazepines on a PRN regimen to minimize use, this regimen is paradoxically associated with greater use levels. Indeed, PRN administration regimens may in

Quantity of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol consumption and cannabis use disorder among daily cannabis consumers.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Amid escalating cannabis legalization and daily consumption in the United States (US), determining the risk of cannabis use disorder (CUD) and relevant consequences among daily consumers has become a public health priority. Understanding these risks requires valid assessment of the daily quantity of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) consumed and its relation to consequences. This study characterized daily cannabis consumption using a new method for estimating milligrams of THC (mgTHC), and examined the relationship between daily mgTHC and CUD severity in a large national

Association between non-medical cannabis legalization and emergency department visits for cannabis-induced psychosis.

A major public health concern of cannabis legalization is that it may result in an increase in psychotic disorders. We examined changes in emergency department (ED) visits for cannabis-induced psychosis following the legalization and subsequent commercialization (removal of restrictions on retail stores and product types) of non-medical cannabis in Ontario, Canada (population of 14.3 million). We used health administrative data containing the cause of all ED visits to examine changes over three periods; 1) pre-legalization (January 2014-September 2018); 2) legalization with restrictions (Octob

Amino Acid Supplementation as a Biostimulant in Medical Cannabis (Cannabis sativa L.) Plant Nutrition.

There is growing evidence to support the involvement of nutrients and biostimulants in plant secondary metabolism. Therefore, this study evaluated the potential of amino acid-based supplements that can influence different hydroponic nutrient cycles (systems) to enhance the cannabinoid and terpene profiles of medical cannabis plants. The results demonstrate that amino acid biostimulation significantly affected ion levels in different plant tissues (the "ionome"), increasing nitrogen and sulfur content but reducing calcium and iron content in both nutrient cycles. A significantly higher accumula

Analysis of State Cannabis Laws and Dispensary Staff Recommendations to Adults Purchasing Medical Cannabis.

IMPORTANCE: Over the last decade, cannabis has become more accessible through the proliferation of dispensaries in states that have legalized its use. Most patients using cannabis for medical purposes report getting advice from dispensaries, yet there has been little exploration of frontline dispensary staff practices. OBJECTIVE: To describe the practices of frontline dispensary workers who interact with customers purchasing cannabis for medical purposes and assess whether dispensary practices are associated with medicalization of state cannabis laws (degree to which they resemble regulation

Cannabis Use and Cannabis Use Disorders Among Youth in the United States, 2002-2014.

OBJECTIVE: To examine trends in past-year cannabis use (CU) and cannabis use disorders (CUD) among youth in the United States, when related changes began, and factors associated with these changes. METHODS: This study used data from 288,300 persons aged 12-17 years who participated in the 2002-2014 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Descriptive analyses and bivariable and multivariable logistic regressions were applied (using the year 2002 as the reference group for most analyses). RESULTS: The prevalence of past-year CU among youth decreased from 15.8% in 2002 to 13.1% in 2014 (this do

Mental and Physical Health-Related Cannabis Motives Mediate the Relationship between Childhood Trauma and Problematic Cannabis Use over Time among Emerging Adult Cannabis Users.

BACKGROUND: While growing evidence has identified mental and physical health-related cannabis use motives as significant mechanisms between childhood trauma and problematic cannabis use (PCU) for emerging adults (EA), there is a need to understand the longitudinal stability of these pathways and how they impact PCU as cannabis users age into later adulthood. METHODS: The current study extends an analysis examining the impact of childhood trauma (e.g., emotional abuse, sexual abuse) on multiple indicators of PCU through a range of cannabis use motives. 339 medical cannabis patient and non-pati

Cannabis products and risk perceptions among people who consume and do not consume cannabis in the UK: findings from the International Cannabis Policy Study.

BACKGROUND: Population data on cannabis use-beyond prevalence and frequency of use-in the UK is lacking, yet needed to inform harm reduction messaging about cannabis. This study examined (a) recreational and medical cannabis use; (b) cannabis product use; (c) cannabis risk perceptions via three different routes of administration; (d) how product use and risk perceptions vary by reasons for use and higher risk use. METHODS: Data were from UK respondents of the 2023 International Cannabis Policy Study. National surveys included 3444 UK residents and 1590 people who consumed cannabis in the past

Perceptions, Experiences, and Patterns of Cannabis Use in Individuals with Mood and Anxiety Disorders in the Context of Cannabis Legalization and Medical Cannabis Program in Canada - A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Perceptions of cannabis as a potential medical treatment for mood and anxiety disorders have been increasing in the context of legalizations, availability, and medical cannabis programs, though current evidence predominately indicates risks and negative effects of cannabis use (CU) on mental health outcomes. This study aims to understand motivations, perceptions, effects, and patterns of CU in individuals with mood and anxiety disorders. METHODS: Thirty-six adult patients diagnosed with mood or anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or posttraumatic stress disorder wh

Trends in cannabis use and cannabis use disorder among parents in the U.S., 2012-2024.

OBJECTIVE: Determine the prevalence and trends in cannabis use among U.S. parents of children < 18 years old. Cannabis use increasing among parents could be important because cannabis has been linked to parenting quality in cross-sectional studies. METHOD: Analyzed 2012-2024 data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) (N = 481,858), an annual survey of U.S. residents aged ≥ 12 years old. We estimated the prevalence of cannabis use outcomes in parents vs. non-parents and tested whether trends in cannabis use outcomes differed among parents (N = 169,926) vs. non-parents (N = 31

The impact of cannabis co-use and cannabis use disorder on interest in and barriers to tobacco cessation.

BACKGROUND: Co-use of cannabis and tobacco is increasing, but its impact on smoking cessation is not completely understood. It is unclear whether any cannabis use, or only problematic use such as cannabis use disorder (CUD), impacts smoking cessation. METHOD: In 2023, we conducted an online, national survey of US adults (n = 2,271) currently smoking cigarettes. We examined the association of past 30-day cannabis use (divided into three groups: co-use with CUD, co-use without CUD, and no cannabis use) with outcomes that can impact smoking cessation: self-rated importance, readiness, and confid

Understanding motives for illicit medicinal cannabis use: an exploratory analysis in a medical cannabis program.

BACKGROUND: Medical Cannabis (MC) is authorized in numerous state-legislated programs to treat approved medical conditions. Notwithstanding MC access, some participants continue to use cannabis purchased outside of a state licensed MC pharmacy, otherwise known as illicit medicinal cannabis (IMC), to treat their medical conditions. Identifying barriers and contributors to MC use and motives for IMC use can promote safety, improve program design, and inform future research efforts. METHODS: This exploratory analysis utilized baseline survey data from a convenience sample-based prospective cohor

Temporal Trends in Young Adult Cannabis and Tobacco Use in States with Different Cannabis Policies.

OBJECTIVE: Cannabis legalization may impact both cannabis and tobacco use, given the high prevalence of co-use (including blunt use) among young adults (YAs) in the United States. The objective of this descriptive ecological study was to examine trends in YA cannabis and tobacco use from 2002-2018 in states that passed adult and medical use (AMU) or medical use only (MUO) cannabis laws during that time (N = 16). METHOD: Using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, we conducted a segmented regression analysis to calculate absolute percent change in past 30-day cannabis, blunt, c

Characterization of Cannabis users and products and the experience of negative mental emotions following Cannabis use.

There is a potential link between cannabis and mental disorders. Cannabis exposure involves in many cases negative mental emotions, which are unpleasant sensations or thoughts. Whereas mild cases of negative mental emotions inflict patient's quality of life, more severe cases lead to therapy discontinuations, or even hospitalizations and death. This study characterizes cannabis users who experienced negative mental emotions after cannabis exposure. The Releaf App database was utilized to evaluate the association between personal and cannabis use characteristics on reporting a negative mental
