This paper presents a novel tattooing capsule endoscope (TCE) for delivering a certain amount of ink to the submucosal layer of digestive tract organs. A dual-function permanent magnet is used for locomotion and injection activation. The developed capsule endoscope can move actively in 5 DOF due to the interaction between the permanent magnet and a controllable external magnetic field produced by an electromagnet actuation system. In addition, the permanent magnet is involved in a specially designed mechanism to activate a process that creates a squeezing motion to eject the liquid from the st

Push-and-Pull enteroscopy/Double balloon enteroscopy (PPE/DBE) allows enteroscopy of the entire small bowel, or at least a substantial part of it. The complication rate is acceptably low. Severe complications such as pancreatitis and perforation were encountered in the literature in approximately 1% of all diagnostic PPE/DBEs. It can be expected that the complication rate of therapeutic PPE/DBEs is higher, comparable with the conventional endoscopy. The diagnostic yield is high, at approximately 75%, as is the therapeutic yield. The option of carrying out endoscopic therapy (in approximately 4

Eosinophilic gastroenteritis (EoGE) is a rare digestive disorder characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the stomach and intestines. In the diagnosis of EoE, it is extremely important to recognize distinctive endoscopic findings and accurately detect increased eosinophilia in gastrointestinal tissues. However, endoscopic findings of EoGE in the small intestine remain poorly understood. Therefore, we conducted a literature review of 16 eligible papers. Redness or erythema was the most common endoscopic finding in the small bowel, followed by villous atrophy, erosion, ulceration, and edema

Wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) is the only option for non-invasive small intestine disease diagnostics. However, the small size of the capsules poses a major design challenge for engineers since multiple optical and electrical components must reside inside the capsules. This article proposes a space-saving dual-purpose component utilized in both optical image capturing and microwave wireless data transmission of a WCE capsule at the 915 MHz industrial-scientific-medical band. The optical performance is verified through ray-tracing simulations, whereas the microwave operation is demonstrated

The Agile® capsule has shown to be useful when evaluating the patency of the small bowel in patients prior to capsule endoscopy studies. It is a safe tool and a low rate of complications have been reported, highlighting symptomatic retention, although references in literature are scarce and it is only observed in 1.2% of the procedures. We present the case of a symptomatic retention of this device in a patient with previously known colonic Crohn's disease in who a small bowel study was indicated and was sent for prior patency test.

An underweight 15-year-old boy had a video capsule endoscopy (VCE) to investigate iron deficient anaemia associated with elevated platelet and white cell counts. The suspicion was of subclinical small bowel Crohn's disease after the findings of a radiolabelled white cell scan. The VCE in May 2007 found patchy inflammation and superficial ulcers in the terminal ileum consistent with Crohn's disease. By March 2008, the patient remained asymptomatic but the capsule had not passed. He was treated with steroids to improve the inflammation and allow the capsule to pass. This was unsuccessful. Abdomi

Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is a noninvasive method for examining the gastrointestinal tract which has been successful in small intestine studies. Recently, VCE has been attempted in the colon. However, the capsule often tumbles in the wider colonic lumen, resulting in missed regions. Self-stabilizing VCE is a novel method to visualize the colon without tumbling. The aim of the present study was to comparatively quantify the effect of stabilization of a commercially available nonmodified capsule endoscope (CE) MiroCam and its modified self-stabilizing version in acute canine experiments. OBJECTIVE: To identify a correlation between diagnostic markers of Crohn's disease and endoscopic data using the Capsule Endoscopy Crohn's Disease Activity Index for isolated small intestine lesions.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied 127 patients over previous 19 years. All patients were divided into 2 groups: isolated Crohn's disease of small intestine (group 1) and lesion of small and large intestine or large intestine only (group 2). All patients underwent capsule enteroscopy (MiroCam system, South Korea). Clinical activity of Crohn's disease was determined using the Best's scale, endoscopi

Capsule endoscopy first captivated the medical world when it provided a means to visualize the small bowel, which was previously out of endoscopic reach. In the subsequent decade and a half we continue to learn of the true potential that capsule endoscopy has to offer. Of particular current interest is whether capsule endoscopy has any reliable investigative role in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Much research has already been dedicated to enhancing the diagnostic and indeed therapeutic properties of capsule endoscopy. Specific modifications to tackle the challenges of the gut have already

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the performance of a computer-controlled monitor of bladder pressure in the prevention of transurethral resection (TUR) syndrome.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The in vitro pressure loss in catheters and endoscopes of different size was measured for irrigant flow rates of 0-500 mL/min to calibrate them before surgery. The calibrations were used in a computerized monitoring system designed to control bladder pressure during TUR of the prostate (TURP). The performance of the system was assessed in a randomized study of 53 patients with a prostate adenoma or carcinoma (Group A, 27

BACKGROUND: The most concerning complication of capsule endoscopy (CE) is capsule retention (CR) in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract; however, the clinical outcomes and management of patients with CR are still uncertain.
AIMS: This study aimed to investigate the clinical outcomes and management of CR.
METHODS: The outcomes of CR in multiple centers between October 2002 and June 2018 were retrospectively reviewed. Data on CE indication, findings, and management details were analyzed.
RESULTS: A total of 2705 consecutive small-bowel CE procedures were performed. CR was detected in 20 cases (0.

A 69-year-old man presented to our emergency room with malena and symptoms suggestive of anaemia. He was on chronic anticoagulation with warfarin for a mechanical aortic valve. He was haemodynamically stable. Laboratory investigations revealed a low haemoglobin level of 7.1 g/dL and a low-ferritin level of 6 ng/dL suggesting chronic gastrointestinal bleeding. Oesophagogastroduodenoscopy and colonoscopy were performed to identify the source of bleeding but were unfruitful. Video capsule endoscopy was performed. Fifteen hours after ingesting the capsule endoscope, the patient started having seve

MR1: ESGE recommends small-bowel capsule endoscopy as the first-line examination, before consideration of other endoscopic and radiological diagnostic tests for suspected small-bowel bleeding, given the excellent safety profile of capsule endoscopy, its patient tolerability, and its potential to visualize the entire small-bowel mucosa.Strong recommendation, moderate quality evidence. MR2: ESGE recommends small-bowel capsule endoscopy in patients with overt suspected small-bowel bleeding as soon as possible after the bleeding episode, ideally within 48 hours, to maximize the diagnostic and subs

INTRODUCTION: The PillCam™ patency capsule is useful to prevent capsule endoscope retention; however, visual confirmation of patency capsule excretion is challenging for many patients.
OBJECTIVE: We investigated the factors related to the patency capsule remaining in the colon after 33 h and the factors hindering the visual confirmation of its excretion.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 498 patients with intestinal patency who underwent patency capsule examination. Patients were categorized into the "excretion group" and "colon group," depending on whether the capsule was excreted or rem

INTRODUCTION: Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is a useful tool to differentiate small intestinal bleeding, inflammatory bowel disease, and other small bowel disease. The most common adverse effect of VCE is capsule retention; the incidence varies greatly depending on the underlying disease, which is known to increase from 1.5% in healthy individuals to 21% in patients with small bowel Crohn disease. We report this case on a patient who had asymptomatic capsule retention for 12 months and experienced natural elimination with medication.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A 21-year-old woman presented to the hosp

BACKGROUND: Capsule endoscopy (CE) retention remains a concern in patients with suspected or known Crohn's Disease (CD).
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of a patency capsule (PC) to establish functional patency in pediatric patients with suspected or known, symptomatic IBD.
METHODS: A prospective, single center study evaluating the impact of CE on CD management used PC to qualify patients for CE. Patients excreting an intact PC, usually within 40 h of ingestion, were able to undergo standard video CE. Excretion time, structural integrity and patient safety were evaluat

Video capsule endoscopy (VCE) is a safe innovative tool for investigating obscure gastrointestinal bleeding, Crohn's disease and other small bowel pathologies. The capsule is usually excreted with faeces within 24-48 h. Retention of capsule rarely occurs, and it usually depends on the indication of VCE. The longest reported case of capsule retention in the literature is 2.5 years. Surgical approach is considered effective to retrieve the retained capsule. We present a case of asymptomatic retention of capsule for four and half years in a 49-year-old man who underwent VCE to explore the cause o
