Long-term PFOA and cadmium Co-contamination alters soil carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling: Insights from metagenomics and metabolomics.

The co-existence of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and cadmium (Cd) in soil poses a combined threat to microbial communities. However, the ecological effects and underlying mechanisms of their long-term combined exposure remain poorly understood. This study conducted a 90-day soil microcosm experiment to systematically investigate the effects of individual and combined effects of PFOA and Cd on microbial communities. Our results demonstrated that combined pollution of PFOA and Cd significantly affected four soil enzyme activities associated with carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycling. It also

From carrier to reactor: How microplastic as a mobile source of dissolved organic matter reshapes soil carbon cycling and microbial communities.

Soil microplastic (MP) pollution is a growing global concern, with MPs ubiquitously detected across ecosystems. This review systematically examines the multifaceted interactions between MPs and soil dissolved organic matter (DOM), focusing on three core mechanisms: physical adsorption, chemical reactions, and microbial mediation. We highlight how MPs transition from passive carriers to active reactors of DOM, influencing DOM molecular diversity, stability, and environmental persistence. Key findings include the role of MP aging in generating reactive oxygen species that accelerate DOM minerali

Optimizing carbon and nitrogen cycles towards net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in agrifood systems: a case study in Quzhou, China.

Agrifood systems emit substantial amounts of greenhouse gases (GHG) into the atmosphere, but simultaneously sequester carbon (C) originating from atmospheric CO2 in soils. Their net effects on the GHG balance are rarely documented. This study aimed to quantify C cycles and GHG emissions in agrifood systems at both village and county levels and explore the potential to transition towards net-zero emissions. We integrated a modified material and nutrient flow model (NUFER) and a soil C cycle model (RothC) to calculate C cycles in the case area of Quzhou, China. Results showed that net photosynth

Middle cerebral artery blood velocity and end-tidal carbon dioxide responses to moderate intensity cycling in children, adolescents, and adults.

This study investigated the middle cerebral artery blood velocity (MCAv) response to constant work-rate moderate-intensity cycling exercise in 21 children (9.3 ± 0.8 yr), 17 adolescents (12.3 ± 0.4 yr), and 20 young adults (23.6 ± 2.4 yr). Participants completed an incremental ramp test to exhaustion on a cycle ergometer to determine maximal oxygen uptake and gas exchange threshold (GET) before completing three 6-min transitions at a moderate intensity (90% GET) on separate visits. On each visit, bilateral MCAv was measured by transcranial Doppler ultrasonography and breath-by-breath end-tidal

A life cycle assessment of an enterprise's low-carbon emissions model: The Xinjiang Shihezi pig farm faecal treatment biogas project as a case study.

The requirement of carbon emission reduction promotes the continuous implementation and development of low carbon emission mode in typical high-carbon industry aquaculture, especially in the resourceful treatment of terminal waste. However, the previous studies usually focus on a single process or chain, the difference between the long-chain (LC) and automated integration (AI) in the overall environmental impact needs to be quantified and standardised. This paper intends to make a comparative study on two waste treatment biogas projects of aquaculture, a typical industry with high resource con

Methanotrophs and co-occurring microbial taxa: Genomic potential for carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles in newly formed high-altitude proglacial lakes.

The extreme and fragile environments of high-altitude proglacial lakes shape unique microbial communities and metabolic networks, serving as active interfaces in the biogeochemical cycles of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and sulfur (S). However, the metabolic processes underlying microbially driven biogeochemical cycling in these lakes remain poorly understood. In this study, by integrating field investigations and isotopic analyses across multiple seasons, we observed geochemical and genomic evidence consistent with significant microbial methane (CH4) oxidation in the surface sediments of cryo-ol

Thaumarchaeotal signature gene distribution in sediments of the northern South China Sea: an indicator of the metabolic intersection of the marine carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles?

Thaumarchaeota are abundant and active in marine waters, where they contribute to aerobic ammonia oxidation and light-independent carbon fixation. The ecological function of thaumarchaeota in marine sediments, however, has rarely been investigated, even though marine sediments constitute the majority of the Earth's surface. Thaumarchaeota in the upper layer of sediments may contribute significantly to the reservoir of nitrogen oxides in ocean waters and thus to productivity, including the assimilation of carbon. We tested this hypothesis in the northern South China Sea (nSCS), a section of a l

Metagenomic Insights into Microbial Functional Potential Associated with Soil Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Cycling Along an Elevational Gradient in a Warm-Temperate Forest.

Soil microbial functional potential is crucial to maintaining forest productivity and ecosystem functions. However, how microbially mediated soil nutrient cycling responds to environmental changes, particularly those caused by variations in elevation, remains poorly understood. Using the natural temperature gradient in a temperate mountain forest, this study investigated the differences in functional microbial groups and functional genes involved in soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus cycling along the elevation gradient, and analyzed the associations between environmental factors and these d

The Effect of Substituted Benzene-Sulfonamides and Clinically Licensed Drugs on the Catalytic Activity of CynT2, a Carbonic Anhydrase Crucial for Escherichia coli Life Cycle.

Proteins are relevant antimicrobial drug targets, and among them, enzymes represent a significant group, since most of them catalyze reactions essential for supporting the central metabolism, or are necessary for the pathogen vitality. Genomic exploration of pathogenic and non-pathogenic microorganisms has revealed genes encoding for a superfamily of metalloenzymes, known as carbonic anhydrases (CAs, EC 4.2.1.1). CAs catalyze the physiologically crucial reversible reaction of the carbon dioxide hydration to bicarbonate and protons. Herein, we investigated the sulfonamide inhibition profile of

Enhanced oxidative degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol by iron oxychloride supported on graphitic carbon nitride via peroxymonosulfate activation: Significant role of Fe(II)/Fe(III) conversion cycle.

The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by heterogeneous catalysts presents an exciting but challenging strategy for degrading persistent organic pollutants in water. Iron oxychloride (FeOCl) is considered a promising heterogeneous catalyst due to its unique oxygen bridge structure, which could render it more active by facilitating the iron valence transitions between Fe(II) and Fe(III). However, the limited Fe(II)/Fe(III) conversion cycle rate hinders its catalytic activity, leading to unsatisfactory PMS activations in practical applications. Herein, we demonstrated the performance and the

Micronutrients in Support to The Carbon Cycle Activate Antioxidant Defences and Reduce Sperm DNA Damage in Infertile Men Attending Assisted Reproductive Technology Programs: Clinical Trial Study.

BACKGROUND: Micronutrients in support to the carbon cycle were shown to reduce sperm DNA damage both in animal models and infertile men. Besides supporting DNA methylation, their positive effect may be mediated by an improved performance of the endogenous antioxidant system but this has not yet been proven in clinical settings. The present study aimed at evaluating the effects of micronutrient supplementation in infertile male partners of assisted reproductive technology (ART) resistant couples. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental clinical trial study, infertile male partners of coupl

Residual water bodies formed after thermokarst lake drainage in permafrost regions act as hot spots of nutrient and carbon cycling and greenhouse gas emissions.

Drained thermokarst (thaw) lakes of permafrost regions represent potentially important but poorly constrained hot spots of greenhouse gas (GHG), carbon, and nutrient cycling. To elucidate the biogeochemistry of residual water bodies (RWB) formed after thermokarst lake drainage in permafrost peatlands, we measured dissolved CO₂ and CH₄ concentrations, CO₂ emissions, and dissolved (<0.45 μm) carbon, major, and trace element concentrations in the continuous and discontinuous permafrost zones of the Western Siberian Lowlands. Residual water bodies located within drained lake basins were examined a

Maximizing Nano-Silica Efficiency in Laboratory-Simulated Recycled Concrete Aggregate via Prior Accelerated Carbonation: An Effective Strategy to Up-Cycle Construction Wastes.

Herein, the study explores a composite modification approach to enhance the use of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) in sustainable construction by combining accelerated carbonation (AC) and nano-silica immersion (NS). RCA, a major source of construction waste, faces challenges in achieving comparable properties to virgin aggregates. Nano-silica, a potent pozzolan, is added to fill micro-cracks and voids in RCA, improving its bonding and strength. AC pretreatment accelerates RCA's natural carbonation, forming calcium carbonate that strengthens the aggregate and reduces porosity. Due to the com

Microbial recycling cells (MRCs): A new platform of microbial electrochemical technologies based on biocompatible materials, aimed at cycling carbon and nutrients in agro-food systems.

This article reviews the mechanisms that drive nutrients and carbon sequestration from wastewaters by microbial electrochemical technologies (METs). In this framework, a new generation of METs is also presented (to be called microbial recycling cells, MRCs), based on 100%-recyclable materials (biomass-derived char coal, clay, terracotta, paper, ligno-cellulosic plant materials, etc.), which can act as bio-electrodes, separators and structural frames. In traditional METs architectures (based on technological materials such as carbon cloths, plastic panels, membranes, binders), inorganic salts p

Revealing the fundamental role of MoO2 in promoting efficient and stable activation of persulfate by iron carbon based catalysts: Efficient Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling to generate reactive species.

Electron-rich iron sites are the main sites for iron-based catalysts to activate persulfate (PS) to generate reactive species, while blocked Fe2+/Fe3+ cycling usually reduces the catalytic performance of iron-based materials and hinders the generation of reactive species in the reaction. To solve the bottleneck, we synthesized an iron-carbon nanocomposite catalyst loaded with MoO2 (Fe/Mo-CNs). The promotion of MoO2 on the Fe2+/Fe3+ cycle in the system allowed Fe/Mo-CNs to exhibit excellent catalytic performance and environmental adaptability. The degradation rate of bisphenol S (BPS) by the Fe

Effect of flumetsulam alone and coexistence with polyethylene microplastics on soil microbial carbon and nitrogen cycles: Elucidation of bacterial community structure, functional gene expression, and enzyme activity.

Flumetsulam (FLU) is a new class of broad-spectrum herbicides. With the widespread use of plastic products, polyethylene (PE) microplastics (MPs) may remain in the soil. It is possible for these two novel contaminants to co-exist in the soil environment. In the present study, we used brown soil as the test soil and determined the toxicity of FLU at 0.05, 0.5 and 2.5 mg kg-1 alone and in combination with PE MPs (1%) on soil microorganisms. The obtained results demonstrated that the exposure of FLU and FLU+MPs had an inhibitory effect on the numbers of bacteria and fungi. In addition, FLU and FL

Preparation of layered-porous carbon from coal tar pitch narrow fractions by single-solvent extraction for superior cycling stability electric double layer capacitor application.

Coal tar pitch (CTP) with high carbon content and wide source of raw materials was an excellent precursor for the preparation of porous carbons (PCs). CTP was composed of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with complex molecular size and chemical structure, the separation of CTP into several fractions with relatively narrow molecular weight by solvent extraction was of significance for CTP utilization. In this paper, CTP was treated by single-solvent extraction (carbon disulfide, acetone and ethyl acetate), and the six fractions were used as raw materials to prepare PCs as electrode mater
