Effects and Mechanisms of Hooked-End Steel Fibers and Carbon Nanotubes on the Shrinkage of Lithium Slag-Based Geopolymers: Role of Fiber-Confined Zones.

Lithium slag-based geopolymer (LSG) provides a promising route for the high-value utilization of lithium slag; however, its pronounced shrinkage deformation continues to restrict engineering applications. To clarify the multi-scale mechanism by which fibers regulate LSG shrinkage, this study investigated the effects of single and hybrid additions of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and hooked-end steel fibers (HSFs). The 90 d drying shrinkage test quantified shrinkage-reduction efficiency for mono- and hybrid-fiber systems. MIP was used for porosity and pore size distribution analysis; SEM examined fib

Carbonized MOF-coated carbon fibers for an online in-tube SPME-HPLC-DAD method to determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water.

To improve the extraction performance of carbon fibers (CFs) to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the carbonized MOF-coated CFs (CFs@C-MOF) were fabricated for online in-tube solid-phase microextraction (SPME). ZIF-8 was grown on CFs at room temperature and subsequently carbonized at 350°C under nitrogen atmosphere. The morphology and composition of the materials were characterized by SEM, BET, XRD, and Raman spectroscopy. The CFs, CFs@MOF, and CFs@C-MOF were separately filled into each tube and evaluated using PAHs as model analytes. The CFs@C-MOF tube demonstrated superior extraction

Transforming Gas Separations with Scalable Carbon Molecular Sieve Membranes Enabled by Chemically Tuned Hollow-Fiber Precursors.

Blending hydrogen into natural gas pipelines requires efficient separation, while helium recovery from natural gas via cryogenic distillation is energy- and capital-intensive, driving demand for better membranes. This study develops ultraselective carbon molecular sieve (CMS) hollow fiber membranes from chemically modified Matrimid (pyrolyzed at 900°C). Two types of modifications are reported for both applications: treatment with vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMS) or with diethyltoluenediamine/trimesoyl chloride (DETDA/TMC) and VTMS. The chemical modifications create highly economical new precursor

Postoperative MRI Artifact Burden After Carbon Fiber-Reinforced PEEK Versus Titanium Instrumentation in Metastatic Spinal Disease.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Patients undergoing surgery for metastatic spinal disease often require instrumented stabilization followed by radiotherapy and postoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) surveillance. Titanium implants may generate artifacts that impair assessment of the operated level, whereas carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) constructs may improve MRI assessability. This study compared CFR-PEEK and titanium instrumentation with respect to postoperative MRI artifact burden, early outcomes, and oncological follow-up, and introduced a study-specific artifact gr

Effect of Cu-BTC-Modified Carbon Fiber on Interfacial and Mechanical Properties of Polyethylene Matrix Composites.

Carbon fiber (CF)-reinforced polyethylene (PE) composites have low density, outstanding corrosion resistance and good processability. These materials are widely promising for household appliances, automobiles and construction industries. Nevertheless, PE is a non-polar inert matrix with extremely low surface energy, leading to poor interfacial wettability and bonding force with CF. Interfacial debonding frequently occurs along with low load transfer efficiency, failing to meet the service requirements of high-performance structural components. In this study, CF was carboxylated with hydrogen p

Insight into electrocatalytic activity of lattice-confined phosphorus in activated carbon fiber for recalcitrant pollutant degradation.

Conventional carbon-based cathodes suffer from low-efficiency in two electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR) and recalcitrant pollutant degradation. Herein, phosphorus-doped activated carbon fiber (PACF) catalyst was exploited as a cathode to achieve high-efficiency of 2e- ORR for rapidly purifying wastewater containing recalcitrant pollutant (Reactive Red X-3B, RR X-3B) in the electro-Fenton (EF) system. It was found that the calcination at 700 °C after the hydrothermal treatment with 65 % phosphoric acid at 170 °C for 24 h achieved the best electrocatalytic activity compared to traditio

Spontaneous Infiltration Behavior of Al Matrix into Carbon Fiber Bundles Induced by Al-Ni Binary Reaction.

In this study, a Ni-coated carbon fiber reinforced Al-matrix (Ni-CF/Al) composite is prepared utilizing a pressure-free infiltration process. The CFs are coated with a layer of Ni through an electroless plating process, which facilitates the spontaneous infiltration behavior driven by the Al-Ni binary reaction. The spontaneous infiltration process, observed via synchrotron radiation in the direction opposite to gravity, demonstrates a fastest velocity of 31.02 ± 1.08 μm/s. By increasing the infiltration temperature, the interfacial microstructure of the composite can be enhanced, characterized

Durability of carbon fiber-reinforced PEEK spinal instrumentation in spine oncology: a single-institution longitudinal experience.

OBJECTIVE: Carbon fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) instrumentation is increasingly being used in patients with spine tumors as the body of literature supporting its benefit in local disease surveillance and radiation planning grows. Small single-institution experiences with short-term follow-up have yet to demonstrate issues with construct durability despite different biomechanical properties of CFR-PEEK compared to titanium. In this study the authors evaluated CFR-PEEK hardware failures in patients with surgically treated spine tumors who had long-term follow-up. METHODS: Thi

Biotribological properties of 3D printed high-oriented short carbon fiber reinforced polymer composites for artificial joints.

Short carbon fiber (SCF) reinforced polymer composites are expected to possess outstanding biotribological and mechanical properties in certain direction, while the non-oriented SCF weakens its reinforcing effect in the matrix. In this work, high-oriented SCF was achieved during nozzle extrusion, and then SCF reinforced polyether-ether-ketone (PEEK) composites were fabricated by fused deposition modeling (FDM). The concrete orientation process of SCF was theoretically simulated, and significant shear stress difference was generated at both ends of SCF. As a result, the SCF was distributed in t

Statistical Analysis of Large Format Additively Manufactured Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol with 30% Carbon Fiber Tensile Data.

In large format additive manufacturing (LFAM), a keener understanding of the relationship between the manufacture method and material temperature dependency is needed for the production of large polymer parts. Statistical analyses supported by material properties and a meso-structural understanding of LFAM are applied to elucidate tensile data trends. The data from LFAM polyethylene terephthalate glycol with 30% carbon fiber (CF) (PETG CF30%) panels (diagonal, horizontal, and vertical in the x-y print plane) and injection-molded specimens tensile tested at six different testing temperatures (r

An Experimental Study on the Thermomechanical Coupling Effects of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Polyetheretherketone under Dynamic Impact.

Carbon-fiber-reinforced polyetheretherketone (CF/PEEK) composites are widely utilized in aerospace, medical devices, and automotive industries, renowned for their superior mechanical properties and high-temperature resistance. Despite these advantages, the thermomechanical coupling behavior of CF/PEEK under dynamic loading conditions is not well understood. This study aims to explore the thermomechanical coupling effects of CF/PEEK at elevated strain rates, employing Hopkinson bar impact tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for detailed characterization. Our findings indicate that an i

Carbon Fiber-Reinforced PolyEtherEtherKetone (CFR-PEEK) Instrumentation in Degenerative Disease of Lumbar Spine: A Pilot Study.

CFR-PEEK is gaining popularity in spinal oncological applications due to its reduction of imaging artifacts and radiation scattering compared with titanium, which allows for better oncological follow-up and efficacy of radiotherapy. We evaluated the use of these materials for the treatment of lumbar degenerative diseases (DDs) and considered the biomechanical potential of the carbon fiber in relation to its modulus of elasticity being similar to that of bone. Twenty-eight patients with DDs were treated using CRF-PEEK instrumentation. The clinical and radiographic outcomes were collected at a 1

Laser Direct-Write Sensors on Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Poly-Ether-Ether-Ketone for Smart Orthopedic Implants.

Mechanically close-to-bone carbon-fiber-reinforced poly-ether-ether-ketone (CFR-PEEK)-based orthopedic implants are rising to compete with metal implants, due to their X-ray transparency, superior biocompatibility, and body-environment stability. While real-time strain assessment of implants is crucial for the postsurgery study of fracture union and failure of prostheses, integrating precise and durable sensors on orthopedic implants remains a great challenge. Herein, a laser direct-write technique is presented to pattern conductive features (minimum sheet resistance <1.7 Ω sq-1 ) on CRF-PEEK-

Laminate Design of Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Resin Matrix Composites for Optimized Mechanical Properties and Electrical Conductivity.

Carbon fiber composites as pantograph slide materials are in the development stage, in which copper is the conductive phase, and the addition form and size need to be designed. Herein, the effects of the copper morphology, the size of the copper mesh on the performance, and the influence of the contact mode between the sliding plate and bracket on the temperature rise were compared and analyzed. The resistivity is 11.2 μΩ·m with the addition of 20 wt% copper mesh, a relative reduction of 91.77%. Importantly, the impact strength is increased by 14.19%, and the wear is reduced by 13.21%; hence,

Ambient temperature sulfonated carbon fiber reinforced PEEK with hydroxyapatite and reduced graphene oxide hydroxyapatite composite coating.

30% carbon fiber reinforced polyetheretherketone (CFR-PEEK) has in recent times, become significant in the orthopedic industry because its elastic modulus can be engineered to match that of the human bone. But it is bioinert and does not integrate well with the immediate bone tissue environment. In this study, a combined surface modification technique involving ambient temperature sulfonation and surface coating of (hydroxyapatite (HA), 5%reduced graphene oxide hydroxyapatite(5%RGO/HA) and 10%reduced graphene oxide hydroxyapatite(10%RGO/HA) composites) on 30%CFR-PEEK was achieved with an appro

Enhanced adsorption of ionizable antibiotics on activated carbon fiber under electrochemical assistance in continuous-flow modes.

Ionizable antibiotics have attracted serious concerns because of their variable dissociation forms and thereby rendering unique toxicity and microorganism resistance. Developing an efficient and environmentally friendly method for removing these micropollutants from environmental media remains very challenging. Here, electro-assisted adsorption onto activated carbon fiber in continuous-flow mode was used to remove three ionizable antibiotics, sulfadimethoxine (SDM), ciprofloxacin (CIP), and clarithromycin (CLA), from water. Benefiting from strengthened electrostatic interactions, the adsorptio

Fiber and fabric solar cells by directly weaving carbon nanotube yarns with CdSe nanowire-based electrodes.

Electrode materials are key components for fiber solar cells, and when combined with active layers (for light absorption and charge generation) in appropriate ways, they enable design and fabrication of efficient and innovative device structures. Here, we apply carbon nanotube yarns as counter electrodes in combination with CdSe nanowire-grafted primary electrodes (Ti wire) for making fiber and fabric-shaped photoelectrochemical cells with power conversion efficiencies in the range 1% to 2.9%. The spun-twist long nanotube yarns possess both good electrical conductivity and mechanical flexibili
