Thymic squamous cell carcinoma in a cat.

BACKGROUND: The most common cranial mediastinal masses affecting dogs and cats include lymphoma and thymic epithelial tumors. In this report, a cat with a cranial mediastinal mass was diagnosed with a thymic carcinoma subtype squamous cell carcinoma, which has rarely been reported in cats. Management of this subtype with a combination of surgery and chemotherapy has so far not been reported. This case report describes the treatment with surgical management followed by intracavitary carboplatin. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 12-year-old male neutered domestic short hair cat was referred for lethargy, hy

Oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma mimicking submucosal tumour.

BACKGROUND: Oesophageal submucosal tumours are usually benign. We report a rare case of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma presenting as a submucosal tumour. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old man undergoing screening oesophago-gastroduodenoscopy was found to have a smooth-surfaced 0.6-cm sized submucosal tumour in the oesophagus 30 cm from the incisor. Endoscopic ultrasonography showed the tumour to be located in the muscularis mucosa; the lesion was heterogeneously hypoechoic and had a clear boundary. With a provisional diagnosis of leiomyoma, the tumour was removed by endoscopic submucosal d

Vulval squamous cell carcinoma and its precursors.

Vulval squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) can arise through two distinct pathways [human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated and HPV-independent], and these VSCC variants are recognised as different disease entities on the basis of different aetiologies, morphological features, molecular events during oncogenesis, precursor lesions, prognosis, and response to treatment. The precursor of HPV-associated VSCC, variously referred to as high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) [vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) 2/3] or usual-type VIN, is morphologically identical to the more common HSIL (cerv

Genomic characterization of vulvar squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Despite increasing incidence, vulvar squamous cell carcinoma (VSCC) is still a rare disease. Until now, two etiological pathways have been described: a high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV)-dependent route and an HPV-independent pathway often associated with lichen sclerosus. To date, therapeutic strategies in VSCC are not influenced by molecular pathological information and therapeutic options for advanced or recurrent disease are limited. METHODS: Whole exome sequencing of DNA, isolated from 34 VSCC samples and matched normal tissue for each individual was performed on an Illumin

Perineural Invasion in Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma is sometimes characterized by an increased risk of locoregional recurrence and occasionally distant metastasis. Several clinical and pathological factors, including perineural invasion, have been shown to have prognostic value in this setting. Perineural invasion, that is, the spread of tumor cells into the space surrounding a nerve, is usually an incidental finding. In the presence of symptoms or radiographic evidence of perineural spread, the diagnosis is clinical perineural invasion, which is associated with an increased risk of local recurrence and mortali

Significant Neutrophilic Emperipolesis in Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

A 53-year-old man was admitted for tooth mobility. A mass was identified at the tooth base by CT. Histopathology of the excisional biopsy revealed a moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Many intact neutrophils were observed within the malignant cell cytoplasm. The patient underwent partial maxillectomy and bilateral neck dissection. Significant neutrophilic emperipolesis was detected in the resected material. Four tumor recurrences developed in the head and neck region during follow-up. Surgery and chemoradiotherapy was performed. The latest tumor recurrence occurred in the perip

In-Transit Metastasis From Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: In-transit metastasis from cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is an uncommon form of metastasis through lymphatics and occurs more commonly in immunosuppressed patients. OBJECTIVE: To identify cases of in-transit SCC and determine patient characteristics, tumor features, management, and prognosis. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A multicenter case series treated by Australian and New Zealand clinicians. RESULTS: In 31 patients, median age was 72 years (range 52-99) and 68% were immunocompetent. Tumors occurred on the head and neck in 94% of cases, with 71% of all tumors occurring on

Temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma - Penang experience.

Temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma (TBSCC) is rare and poses difficulties in diagnosing, staging and management. We describe a case series with six patients who were diagnosed TBSCC, from January 2009 to June 2014, with median age of 62 years old. All patients presented with blood-stain discharge and external auditory canal mass, showing that these findings should highly alert the diagnosis of TBSCC. Three patients staged T3 and another three with T4 disease. High-resolution CT (HRCT) temporal findings were noted to be different from intraoperative findings and therefore we conclude that MR

Skin squamous cell carcinoma presenting as cellulitis.

In general, skin squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) presents as papules or plaques with erythematous or pigmented appearance that may ulcerate the skin. Cellulitis caused by metastatic deposit from a known primary skin SCC has been reported once.1 We describe a patient who presented with cellulitis on the face that did not respond well to full course of antibiotics treatment, and turned out to be a newly diagnosed SCC after biopsy. Other differential diagnoses, such as malignancy, should be suspected in all unusual presentations and biopsy should be taken if patients do not show an optimal and desi

Cervical metastasis of maxillary squamous cell carcinoma.

A retrospective study of maxillary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients attending a department of oral and maxillofacial surgery was performed for the period 2000-2010. The clinical information of 100 cases treated during this period was acquired and analyzed. Patient survival was calculated using the Kaplan-Meier method. For these 100 cases, the total metastatic rate was 34.0% and occult metastatic rate was 27.5%. Positive lymph nodes were mostly detected at levels I-III. There was no significant difference in metastatic rate between the primary sites of maxillary gingiva and hard palate. T

Myiasis on squamous cell carcinoma of skin.

Advanced squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a challenge for treatment. It is also a risk factor for unintended infestation with diptera larvae (maggots) known as myiasis. We performed a retrospective investigation in our files from 2001 to 2014 and identified three patients with SCC-associated myiasis (three men). In all three cases, Lucilia spp. were found. A literature review using PUBMED revealed another 12 cases of SCC-associated myiasis due to different species. It is not only a disease of older age, as two of the patients were in their 20s. The male to female ratio was 2 to 1. Wound myiasi

Taxol: efficacy against oral squamous cell carcinoma.

In medicinal chemistry, one of the most studied molecules in recent history is taxol. Taxol is a versatile natural product that is used in various cancer treatment regimens. It is administered to patients with breast, lung, and ovarian cancers, and is currently being studied for the treatment of squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity and tongue. Taxol has been tested in a number of research and clinical phase trials to determine feasibility, toxicity, and cytotoxicity against oral squamous cell carcinoma as a single drug regimen and as a contributing drug component in treatment plans. [Vasculogenic mimicry in tongue squamous cell carcinoma].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the presence of vasculogenic mimicry (VM) in tongue squamous cell carcinoma and explore its clinical significance. METHODS: Forty-two surgical specimens of tongue squamous cell carcinoma were examined for the presence of VM using HE staining and double staining of CD34 and PAS. RESULTS: Of the 42 specimens, 18 (42.86%) showed the presence of VM. VM was not correlated with the patients' age or gender, but with lymph node metastasis and the grade of tumor differentiation. Compared with tumors without VM, the tumors with VM had a significantly higher rate of lymph node
