Extra-Mitral Abnormalities in Nonsyndromic Mitral Valve Prolapse Assessed By Means of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance.

BACKGROUND: Mitral valve prolapse (MVP) reflects a connective tissue abnormality of the mitral leaflets, but systemic manifestations beyond the valve in nonsyndromic MVP remain uncertain. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) allows a comprehensive assessment of cardiac chambers, aortic dimensions, and skeletal indexes. We investigated systemic morphofunctional features suggestive of connective tissue alterations in nonsyndromic MVP. METHODS: In this single-centre, retrospective case-control study, 120 patients with MVP without more than mild mitral or aortic regurgitation, bicuspid aortic

Independent Association of Individual Lipid Abnormalities with Cardiovascular All-cause Mortality: A Prospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Abnormalities in total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG) are each associated with increased cardiovascular risk, after adjusting for non-lipid risk factors. However, whether and to what extent the association for each lipid measure is confounded by other lipid measures is less understood. AIM: This study aims to investigate the association of each lipid measure with cardiovascular and all-cause mortality while precluding the confounding caused by abnormalities in other lipid measure

Discordance of cardiovascular abnormalities in a monozygotic twin pair carrying a class II 1q21.1 microdeletion.

OBJECTIVE: We present the prenatal diagnosis of a class II 1q21.1 microdeletion in monozygotic (MZ) twins with discordant phenotypes. CASE REPORT: A monochorionic diamniotic twin pair presented with discordant ultrasound anomalies; twin A had cardiovascular abnormalities, while twin B did not. No specific complications were noted in the twins during pregnancy. A single nucleotide polymorphism array revealed an identical class II 1q21.1 microdeletion inherited from a phenotypically normal mother and identified the twins as MZ. The deleted region encompassed both the proximal 1q21.1 thrombocyto

Contribution of bone and mineral abnormalities to cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic kidney disease.

1,25-Dihydroxyvitamin D(3) levels begin to drop early in the course of kidney disease, leading to elevated parathyroid hormone levels and disrupted mineral metabolism. Impaired mineral metabolism seems to be associated not only with bone disease but also with vascular calcification. Animal models have identified molecular mechanisms by which high mineral levels and other uremic substances induce vascular smooth muscle cells to undergo phenotypic changes that initiate the calcification process. Moreover, several epidemiologic and clinical studies showed strong associations between bone loss, ar

Cardiovascular abnormalities of long-COVID syndrome: Pathogenic basis and potential strategy for treatment and rehabilitation.

Cardiac injury and sustained cardiovascular abnormalities in long-COVID syndrome, i.e. post-acute sequelae of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) have emerged as a debilitating health burden that has posed challenges for management of pre-existing cardiovascular conditions and other associated chronic comorbidities in the most vulnerable group of patients recovered from acute COVID-19. A clear and evidence-based guideline for treating cardiac issues of long-COVID syndrome is still lacking. In this review, we have summarized the common cardiac symptoms reported in the months after acute COVID-1

Diaphragm abnormalities in heart failure and aging: mechanisms and integration of cardiovascular and respiratory pathophysiology.

Inspiratory function is essential for alveolar ventilation and expulsive behaviors that promote airway clearance (e.g., coughing and sneezing). Current evidence demonstrates that inspiratory dysfunction occurs during healthy aging and is accentuated by chronic heart failure (CHF). This inspiratory dysfunction contributes to key aspects of CHF and aging cardiovascular and pulmonary pathophysiology including: (1) impaired airway clearance and predisposition to pneumonia; (2) inability to sustain ventilation during physical activity; (3) shallow breathing pattern that limits alveolar ventilation

"Three Hits" Hypothesis for Developmental Origins of Health and Diseases in View of Cardiovascular Abnormalities.

"Fetal Origins of Adult Diseases" (FOAD) or "Barker hypothesis," also known as the developmental origins of health and diseases (DoHaD), was initially proposed by David Barker in the 1980s. Progress in past 2 to 3 decades demonstrated that many adult disorders, including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, cancer, and others, could be linked to poor development resulting from in utero insults. Utero-environments play a critical role in fetal development. Because the placenta and umbilical cord are the only important connections between the fetus and mother in the uterus, this review pays special
