The associations between prices and taxes and the use of tobacco products in Latin America and the Caribbean: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Although taxes that raise retail tobacco prices and industry-initiated price increases have been shown to decrease tobacco consumption, the scarcity of studies in Latin America and the Caribbean using household- or individual-level data in existing reviews limits their policy relevance. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the association between prices and taxes and the use of tobacco products in Latin America and the Caribbean. METHODS: We searched six electronic bibliographic databases, two online search engines, two working paper repositories,

Optimizing the implementation of case-area targeted interventions during cholera outbreaks with context-specific delivery mechanisms.

Cholera, a severe fecal-oral disease, disproportionately affects the poorest communities who lack access to safe water and sanitation. Individuals living in the same household, or within a few hundred meters, of a patient are at increased risk of infection. Thus, during cholera outbreaks, targeted response strategies, such as case-area targeted interventions (CATIs), provide health (e.g., vaccination and antibiotic prophylaxis) and water, sanitation, and hygiene services for affected households and at-risk neighbors living in a defined ring. Previous research on CATIs has focused on impact and

Treatment of periodontal diseases: Latin America and the Caribbean Consensus 2024.

The prevalence of periodontitis in Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACC) drew attention to a significant public health issue exacerbated by socio-economic disparities. This consensus report, based on the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP) S3 level clinical practice guidelines, proposed a multifaceted approach to periodontal health-care. The report highlighted the critical need for holistic, population-wide health policies and underscored the lack of documented community interventions in contemporary literature. The consensus advocated for a patient-centered approach to periodo

Severe hurricanes increase recruitment and gene flow in the clonal sponge Aplysina cauliformis.

Upright branching sponges, such as Aplysina cauliformis, provide critical three-dimensional habitat for other organisms and assist in stabilizing coral reef substrata, but are highly susceptible to breakage during storms. Breakage can increase sponge fragmentation, contributing to population clonality and inbreeding. Conversely, storms could provide opportunities for new genotypes to enter populations via larval recruitment, resulting in greater genetic diversity in locations with frequent storms. The unprecedented occurrence of two Category 5 hurricanes in close succession during 2017 in the

Observations of trash in the deep tropical Atlantic and Caribbean Sea.

Evidence of anthropogenic impacts on deep-ocean systems is frequently observed, even upon the first explorations of these remote environments. One of these impacts comes from marine debris, trash that is dumped or transported into the deep ocean. Understanding the abundance and distribution of marine debris is critical to identifying holistic changes and feedbacks that influence the health and sustainability of ocean ecosystems. Here, we document widespread plastic, metal, and glass debris in deep waters of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean Sea, observed by remotely operated and human occupi

The diversification of Caribbean Buxus in time and space: elevated speciation rates in lineages that accumulate nickel and spreading to other islands from Cuba in non-obligate ultramafic species.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The genus Buxus has high levels of endemism in the Caribbean flora, with ~50 taxa. In Cuba, 82 % grow on ultramafic substrates and 59 % are nickel (Ni) accumulators or Ni hyperaccumulators. Hence it is an ideal model group to study if this diversification could be related to adaptation to ultramafic substrates and to Ni hyperaccumulation. METHODS: We generated a well-resolved molecular phylogeny, including nearly all of the Neotropical and Caribbean Buxus taxa. To obtain robust divergence times we tested for the effects of different calibration scenarios, and we reconstru

A Scoping Review of Footwear Worn by People With Diabetes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: Implications for Ulcer Prevention Programs.

International guidelines advise people with diabetes to wear close-toed, thick-soled footwear to protect against foot ulceration. However, this type of footwear is incompatible with some of the cultures, climates, and socioeconomic conditions in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This scoping review aims to summarize what is known about footwear used by people with diabetes in LMICs and consider whether international diabetic foot guidelines are practical and actionable in these contexts, given current practices. Equity and Prevention of Cardiovascular Diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Non-communicable diseases, particularly cardiovascular diseases, are the leading cause of decreased life expectancy and death in Latin America and the Caribbean. Although a lifestyle, which includes no tobacco use, good nutrition, and regular physical activity is touted as key to health, the environmental, racial, social and economic conditions, which underpin lifestyle are often ignored or considered only secondarily. Placing the main responsibility on a patient to change their lifestyle or to simply comply with pharmacological treatment ignores the specific conditions in which the individual

Insights into the genetic landscape and presence of Cochliomyia hominivorax in the Caribbean.

The New World screwworm, Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a major parasite that causes myiasis in livestock, humans, and other warm-blooded animals in the western hemisphere. There is a permanent biological border that is maintained between Panama and Colombia, as it has been eradicated from North and Central America. However, it still exists in much of the Caribbean and South America causing an estimated annual loss of $3.6 billion dollars in South America alone. Less information is available for C. hominivorax in the Caribbean. Thus, here we examined its presence and genetic landscape in order to

Ciguatera fish poisoning in the age of discovery and the age of enlightenment.

BACKGROUND: Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is the most common poisoning from seafood consumption with an estimated 50,000 cases per year worldwide. Attention to this malady in the English language literature has grown over the past five decades. Endemic areas include the South Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. It is likely that CFP has been present since ancient times, but records to substantiate this are scarce. OBJECTIVE: This historical review looks for clues in earlier writings about potential encounters with CFP as Europeans sailed farther from home into these endemic regions with lit

Patterns of insecticide resistance in Aedes aegypti: meta-analyses of surveys in Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: The re-emergence of worldwide concern with arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) draws increasing attention to their mosquito vectors, particularly Aedes aegypti, whose control heavily rely on insecticide use. As a consequence, insecticide resistance is frequent, but the general patterns of occurrence, cross-resistance and prevailing mechanisms remain unrecognized in some areas such as the Neotropical region. Thus, we sought here to recognize the general trends and patterns of insecticide resistance in Latin America and the Caribbean. A systematic literature review (2008-2018) aime

Species-specific PCR assays for Gambierdiscus excentricus and Gambierdiscus silvae (Gonyaulacales, Dinophyceae).

The two most toxic Gambierdiscus species identified from the Caribbean are G. excentricus and G. silvae. These species are the primary causes of ciguatera fish poisoning and likely contribute disproportionately to the toxicity of marine food webs. While Gambierdiscus species are difficult to distinguish using light or scanning electron microscopy, reliable species-specific molecular identification methods have been developed and used successfully to identify a number of other Gambierdiscus species. Corresponding species-specific assays are not yet available for G. excentricus and G. silvae, wh

ADHD Endophenotypes in Caribbean Families.

Objective: The aim of this study is to contrast the genetics of neuropsychological tasks in individuals from nuclear families clustering ADHD in a Caribbean community. Method: We recruited and clinically characterized 408 individuals using an extensive battery of neuropsychological tasks. The genetic variance underpinning these tasks was estimated by heritability. A predictive framework for ADHD diagnosis was derived using these tasks. Results: We found that individuals with ADHD differed from controls in tasks of mental control, visuospatial ability, visuoverbal memory, phonological and verba

Abortion within and around the law in the Caribbean.

Small island exigencies and a legacy of colonial jurisprudence set the stage for this three-year study in 2001-2003 of abortion practice on several islands of the northeast Caribbean: St. Martin, St. Maarten, Anguilla, Antigua and St Kitts. Based on in-depth interviews with 26 physicians, 16 of whom were performing abortions, it found that licensed physicians are routinely providing abortions in contravention of the law, and that those services, tolerated by governments and legitimised by European norms, are clearly the mainstay of abortion care on these islands. Medical abortion was being use

Asthma in the English-speaking Caribbean.

The prevalence of asthma in the Caribbean is high and seems to be increasing. Asthma research in this region has been biased towards the paediatric population and there is little published on adult disease. There is a high prevalence of other allergic diseases in the patients studied, with skin reactivity to at least one allergen in 50-81% of subjects. Reactivity to house dust mite, especially Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus, occurred most commonly and sensitivity to this mite correlated with high levels of mite proteins in mattress and bedroom dust. Asthmatic admissions to hospitals are highes

Fungal Infections in the Caribbean: A Review of the Literature to Date.

The most common fungal infections reported from the Caribbean include dermatophytosis, candidiasis, pneumocystis, aspergillosis, histoplasmosis, and cryptococcosis. The Caribbean is hyperendemic for histoplasmosis, with high population exposures. Fungal infections are a significant public health problem in the Caribbean, with rates varying depending on the specific country or region. In Trinidad and Tobago, the fungal burden accounts for 3.3% of the 1.4 million population, while in Jamaica, with a population of 2.9 million, over 57,600 people suffer from fungal infections each year. A study in
