[Cartilage-specific autoimmunity in otosclerosis].

The otic capsule of patients with otosclerosis contains premature bone with numerous cartilaginous remnants. Some investigators have proposed that the pathogenesis of otosclerosis is related to these cartilaginous rests in the otic capsule. In this study we investigated the presence of a humoral immune reaction against cartilage-specific antigens using ELISA-methods in patients with otosclerosis. Concomitantly, 8 age- and sex-matched healthy blood donors, free of any symptoms of autoimmune disease, served as controls. The following antigen substrates were used: collagen (I, II, III, VI, IX and

Anti-rheumatic drugs and cartilage.

In this chapter an attempt has been made to draw together the known biology of cartilage and some of the mechanisms thought to be responsible for its failure in arthritis. The picture is far from complete but we are now in a good position to use this information to help appraise the pros and cons of the wide range of drugs now available to treat articular disorders. For convenience, these drugs were classified as NSAIDs, corticosteroids and chondroprotective agents. The influence of each of these classes on the metabolism of cartilage was examined in the light of published laboratory and clini

Metaplastic cartilage in nondysplastic kidneys.

Four hundred ninety-seven patients representing the 525 total or polar nephrectomies performed at the Children's Memorial Hospital from 1938 to 1973 (excluding 1947), were reviewed retrospectively to determine the incidence and characteristics of renal dysplasia. The 46 specimens with this histologic diagnosis all exhibited typical primitive ducts with 13 being also associated with cartilage formation. In five patients, kidney showed focal chondrous metaplasis of the interstitium in association with chronic inflammation but without primitive ducts. The findings strongly suggest that the renal

Cartilage-Specific Has2 Deletion Uncovers an Important Role for Hyaluronan in Cartilage and Joint Integrity.

Background: Hyaluronan (HA) is a critical extracellular matrix component that we have demonstrated to be important for embryonic endochondral bone formation and postnatal synovial joint formation, supporting normal articular cartilage (AC) architecture and chondrocyte function. Although the embryonic requirement for Hyaluronan Synthase 2 (Has2), the main HA-producing enzyme in skeletal tissues, has been extensively investigated, the cartilage-cell-specific roles of Has2 and HA in maintaining postnatal cartilage and joint integrity are not well-defined. Methods: In this study, we used a tamoxif

A sulfonated cartilage interpenetrating polymer network reinforces and protects the extracellular matrix of degraded cartilage.

Cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) comprises a type-II collagen fibril network that affords structure and tensile strength, complemented by a negatively charged, sulfated glycosaminoglycan (GAG) matrix that retains interstitial water. These components act synergistically, bestowing the rheological and tribological material properties essential to cartilage function. At the onset of osteoarthritis, a disease characterized by cartilage degeneration, GAGs diminish from the ECM reducing interstitial fluid load support (IFLS), equilibrium stiffness, and transferring load to the collagen fibril ne

A pilot study comparing mechanical properties of tissue-engineered cartilages and various endogenous cartilages.

BACKGROUND: Mechanical properties of tissue-engineered cartilage and a variety of endogenous cartilage were measured. The main goal was to evaluate if the tissue-engineered cartilage have similar mechanical characteristics to be replaced with rib cartilage in microtia reconstruction. Such study lays the foundation for future human clinical trials for microtia reconstruction. METHOD: Atomic force microscopy and compression testing were used to measure the viscoelasticity of tissue-engineered cartilage (stem cell seeded on Poly lactic co-glycolytic acid nanofibers and Pellet) and endogenous car

Advances in cartilage imaging techniques.

Articular cartilage is crucial for joint function; however, it has limited regenerative capacity when damaged, a hallmark of many rheumatic diseases. Non-invasive imaging is essential for early diagnosis, therapeutic monitoring and prognostication. MRI remains the reference standard, offering detailed assessment of both morphological and compositional cartilage changes. Technological advances, including high-resolution and compositional MRI techniques such as T2 mapping, T1ρ, delayed gadolinium-enhanced MRI of cartilage, sodium imaging, diffusion imaging and ultra-short echo-time imaging, enab

Post-radiotherapy Thyroid Cartilage Chondroradionecrosis.

Radiotherapy is a widely used treatment modality for various cancers, particularly head and neck malignancies. While effective, it can result in a range of adverse effects and complications that impact the patient's quality of life. Chondroradionecrosis (CRN) has been identified as a significant concern, particularly affecting the laryngeal cartilage. We present the case of a 55-year-old male diagnosed with poorly differentiated cancer of the left thyroid lobe with areas of anaplastic differentiation. He underwent total thyroidectomy in April 2021, followed by external beam radiation therapy (

Tick tock, the cartilage clock.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common age-related joint disease, affecting articular cartilage and other joint structures, causing severe pain and disability. Due to a limited understanding of the underlying disease pathogenesis, there are currently no disease-modifying drugs for OA. Circadian rhythms are generated by cell-intrinsic timekeeping mechanisms which are known to dampen during ageing, increasing disease risks. In this review, we focus on one emerging area of chondrocyte biology, the circadian clocks. We first provide a historical perspective of circadian clock discoveries and the m

Congenital Deficiency of Alar Cartilage.

Alar cartilage anatomically determines the size, position, and shape of the nose type. It is also effective in the respiratory function of the nose. The structure of alar cartilage differs from person to person. Congenital anomalies of the nose due to absence of alar cartilage are extremely rare. Usually, trauma and infections are blamed for etiology. The absence of nasal alar cartilage causes both aesthetically nasal deformities and respiratory dysfunction problems. In the literature, congenital alar cartilage defect has been reported as cases with a substantial partial defect. In this study,

3D MRI of Articular Cartilage.

Osteoarthritis, characterized by the breakdown of articular cartilage and other joint structures, is one of the most prevalent and disabling chronic diseases in the United States. Magnetic resonance imaging is a commonly used imaging modality to evaluate patients with joint pain. Both two-dimensional fast spin-echo sequences (2D-FSE) and three-dimensional (3D) sequences are used in clinical practice to evaluate articular cartilage. The 3D sequences have many advantages compared with 2D-FSE sequences, such as their high in-plane spatial resolution, thin continuous slices that reduce the effects
