Castleman's disease of the kidney: Sonographic findings.

We report a case of rare Castleman's disease of the kidney that mimicked a renal neoplasm with emphasis on the imaging and histologic findings. A 47-year-old man presented with dyspeptic symptoms. Ultrasound revealed a vascular, heterogeneous mass in the left kidney. Multiphasic CT scan confirmed an enhancing lesion with enlarged left para-aortic lymph nodes suspicious for nodal metastases. The provisional diagnosis was renal cell carcinoma. Percutaneous biopsy yielded a diagnosis of Castleman's disease of the hyaline-vascular type. Despite advancement in imaging modalities, differentiation of

Castleman's disease of the mesorectum: report of a case.

Castleman's disease is a benign lymphoid proliferative disorder, which most commonly presents as a solitary mass in the mediastinum, although extrathoracic sites have been reported in the neck, axilla, pelvis, mesentery, pancreas, and retroperitoneum. We report a case of asymptomatic, isolated Castleman's disease in the mesorectum, which is extremely rare. The patient was a 34-year-old woman who underwent investigations for vaginal spotting. A presacral mass was located on the left side of the rectum, 10 cm from the anal verge. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography showed a large, well-demarca

Radiotherapy of unicentric mediastinal Castleman's disease.

Castleman's disease is a slowly progressive and rare lymphoproliferative disorder. Here, we report a 55-year-old woman with superior mediastinal Castleman's disease being misdiagnosed for a long term. We found a 4.3 cm mass localized in the superior mediastinum accompanied with severe clinical symptoms. The patient underwent an exploratory laparotomy, but the mass failed to be totally excised. Pathologic examination revealed a mediastinal mass of Castleman's disease. After radiotherapy of 30 Gy by 15 fractions, the patient no longer presented previous symptoms. At 3 months after radiotherapy o

[Castleman's disease: presentation of an atypical case].

Castleman's disease is an unknown etiology lymphoproliferative disorder rare in childhood (only 100 cases described in the literature, 7 of them in Spain). It usually appears in young adults, with no gender-related differences. There are two clinical forms of the disease: the localized variant, the more frequent type, usually presented as a solitary mass (generally in the mediastinum) and asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis, and the multicentric variant, less frequent and usually associated with systemic symptoms and a more aggressive clinical evolution. The diagnosis is confirmed based on t

Castleman's disease accompanied by pleural effusion.

Castleman's disease is a rare disorder of the lymphoid tissue. We report the case of a female patient with bilateral otosclerosis, no respiratory symptoms, and pleural effusion discovered as an incidental finding on a chest X-ray. Computed tomography of the chest revealed a mediastinal mass. The biopsy findings demonstrated that it was a plasmacytic variant of Castleman's disease. The patient underwent mediastinal mass resection. This resulted in near-total resolution of the effusion, which remained as a small loculation within the left pleural space.

Castleman's disease: A rare lymphoproliferative disorder.

Castleman's disease (CD) is an atypical lymphoproliferative disorder. Since it was first described in 1956, it has been referred to as follicular lympho-reticuloma, angiofollicular mediastinal lymph node hyperplasia, and benign giant lymphoma. CD is a heterogeneous disease that can be either localized or systemic (multicentric). The localized form can be divided into two types: the hyaline-vascular (HV) type or the plasma cell (PC) type. The former usually produces few symptoms and histological features include abnormal follicles and increased interfollicular vascularity. The PC type, in which

Castleman's disease of the axilla mimicking metastasis.

Castleman's disease is an unusual inflammatory lymphoproliferative disorder of unknown cause. It most commonly occurs in the mediastinum but rarely in the axillary lymph nodes. We report a case of localized axillary Castleman's disease mimicking metastasis as the patient had a palpable malignant mass in the breast, described by ultrasonography, color Doppler ultrasonography, contrast-enhanced CT, and dynamic enhanced breast MR images.

Multicentric Castleman's disease in HIV infection.

Multicentric Castleman's disease (MCD) is a rare lymphoproliferative disorder. The precise incidence is unknown, although it is more common in HIV-positive than HIV-negative individuals. The pathological features of MCD strongly suggest a chronic antigen stimulation response, and human herpes virus 8 (HHV8) has been found to be universal in cases of HIV-related MCD. The presentation is non-specific with a wide differential diagnosis, which often results in a significant delay in its diagnosis. Diagnosis is made on the clinical presentation of a lymphoproliferative disorder, with evidence of mu

Intracranial Castleman's disease presenting as hypopituitarism.

Castleman's disease is an atypical lymphoproliferative disorder that may present as a localized or multicentric form. The involvement of the central nervous system is rare. We describe here a case of Castleman's disease with involvement of the hypothalamus and meninges, presenting as hypopituitarism. Radiological and clinical pathological features are emphasized and a review of the literature is presented.

Pancreatic Castleman's disease: MR findings.

Castleman's disease can involve a number of organs/tissues but generally affects the mediastinum. Occurrence of Castleman's disease in the pancreas in either form of the disease, the hyaline vascular or the plasma-cell type, is very rare, with only a few case reports in which the imaging findings were described. The MR imaging of pancreatic Castleman's disease has not been previously reported, to our knowledge. We submit the MRI findings in a patient with the plasma-cell-type of Castleman's disease, which presented as an isolated smoothly marginated pancreatic mass, hypointense on T1-weighted

Mesenteric Castleman's disease: report of a case.

A 77-year-old woman was admitted with intermittent abdominal dull pain. Hypochromic anemia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and elevated C-reactive protein were found in this case. Ultrasonography, computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and angiography indicated either mesenteric leiomyoma or leiomyosarcoma, but no definitive preoperative diagnosis could be established. A surgical resection of the tumor revealed a mesenteric Castleman's tumor with small daughter lymphoid tumors of plasma cell type.

Castleman's disease: unusual intrathoracic localization.

Chest-wall is a rare localization of Castleman's disease. The tumour is often diagnosed after onset of non-specific thoracic symptoms but can be occasionally detected in asymptomatic patients. Surgical removal is curative and should be conservative with no recurrences. We report a new case and we review the international literature.

Clinicopathologic study of Castleman's disease in Korea.

Castleman's disease represents an atypical lymphoproliferative disorder, infrequently associated with various immunologic abnormalities or subsequent development of malignancy such as Kaposi sarcoma, malignant lymphoma and plasmacytoma. Its clinicopathologic features depend on various etiologic factors such as Kaposi sarcoma herpesvirus (KSHV), oversecretion of IL-6, adhesion molecule and follicular dendritic cell dysplasia, etc. To investigate the relationship of Castleman's disease (CD) and the above factors, we reviewed 22 cases of CD. Four cases of KSHV positive CD were detected, all multi

Hyaline vascular Castleman's disease of the mediastinum.

Castleman's disease is rare and can be present in many sites and with a variety of symptoms. Surgery is always recommended for localized lesions to remove the mass as completely as possible, reserving other treatment modalities for unresectable cases.

[Castleman's disease: evaluation of 338 cases].

PURPOSE: To evaluate a large group of patients with Castleman's tumours (Castleman's disease = MC) with regard to age, sex and tumour localisation. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 338 cases of MC were evaluated. All cases were registered by the Lymphknotenregister of the German Society of Pathology, Kiel. RESULTS: 292 MC of the hyaline vascular type (MC-HV) and 46 of the plasma cell type (MC-PC) were found, 259 (76.6%) in nodal and 79 (23.4%) in extranodal localisation. Main nodal localisation were the neck (25.5%) and the axilla (12.8%). The mediastinum was involved in only 6.2%. There was a slight p

Molecular analysis of clonality in Castleman's disease.

Castleman's disease (CD) is a rare atypical lymphoproliferative disorder that is morphologically and clinically heterogenous and is associated with a risk of developing malignant lymphoma. We report the clonality status of CD tissues in 34 patients, including 14 patients infected by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Four patients presented a localized form and 30 presented a multicentric form. Two cases were associated with B-cell lymphoma, 3 cases with Hodgkin's disease, and 9 cases (8 HIV+) with Kaposi's sarcoma. Histologically, 8 cases were of the hyaline-vascular type and 26 were of
