Studies on feminization, sex determination, and differentiation of the Southern catfish, Silurus meridionalis--a review.

The sex ratio of the feral Southern catfish was reported to be about 1:1, while the fish obtained by artificial fertilization were always female. Hence, we examined the possible influence of the micro-environment during artificial insemination (pH of the ovarian fluid and concentration of the semen) and early development (feed, hatching temperature, and water) on the sex ratio of Southern catfish fry. In order to examine the possibility of the occurrence of gynogenesis during artificial propagation, cytological observations on the insemination processes and the artificial induction of gynogene

Biochemical and molecular characterization of tetracycline-resistant Aeromonas veronii isolates from catfish.

Eighty-one tetracycline-resistant Aeromonas sp. strains were isolated from farm-raised catfish. Morphological and biochemical characteristics indicated that 23 of the 81 aeromonads were Aeromonas hydrophila, 7 isolates were Aeromonas trota, 6 isolates were Aeromonas caviae, 42 isolates were Aeromonas veronii, and 3 isolates were Aeromonas jandaei. However, the AluI and MboI restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) patterns of the PCR-amplified 1.4-kb 16S rRNA gene from all 81 tetracycline-resistant aeromonads from catfish were identical to the RFLP banding patterns of A. veronii ATCC 35

Pathogenicity and production of virulence factors by Listeria monocytogenes isolates from channel catfish.

Pathogenicity of four channel catfish Listeria monocytogenes isolates (CCF1, CCF4, HCC7, and HCC23) was examined in a comparative manner with virulent type strains L. monocytogenes ATCC 19115 and EGD and avirulent type strain ATCC 15313 in BDF and A/J mice. Isolates HCC7 and CCF1 (both serovar 1) caused similar percent mortalities and 50% lethal concentration values when compared with virulent type strains and were therefore considered pathogenic. The presence of the virulence factors listeriolysin (LLO), phosphotidylcholine-phospholipase (PC-PLC), and phosphotidylinositol-phospholipase (PI-PL

A light-microscopic study on pineal organ structure and innervation in the catfish, Heteropneustes fossilis.

In Heteropneustes fossilis, the pineal organ consists of a long hollow stalk (PS) and an elongate spindle-shaped end vesicle (EV) which lies beneath a highly specialized window. The EV is formed of a dorsal thin and ventral thick parenchymal layer, separated by a lumen and contains photoreceptor, supportive and ganglion cells. The numerous photoreceptor cells are characterized by apical processes which are AF- and PAS-positive. In Holmes' silver preparation, the apical processes showed parallel silver-positive lamellae embedded in luxol fast blue coagulum. The supportive cells are ependymal or

Hidden in the gut: Metabarcoding reveals overlooked predation by the invasive European catfish (Silurus glanis).

Morphological and metabarcoding analyses provided new insights into the diet of the European catfish (Silurus glanis) in an invaded area in the Iberian Peninsula. Out of 264 S. glanis examined, data were obtained for 173 individuals through metabarcoding of intestinal contents and for 110 through morphological analysis of stomach contents. Metabarcoding consistently identified more prey taxa per sample than morphological analysis, yielding a total of 34 and 21 taxa, respectively, that primarily included fish and crustaceans. Morphological analysis demonstrated a higher detection of crustaceans

Postprandial oxygen consumption, ammonia excretion and carbon dioxide production of channel and blue catfish.

Fishes undergo dramatic physiological changes upon consumption of a meal, including an increase in oxygen consumption to support the metabolic cost of digestion [specific dynamic action (SDA)] and an increase in the excretion of ammonia. Channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) and blue catfish (I. furcatus) are two species commonly used for commercial aquaculture production in the United States. Postprandial ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption of both channel and blue catfish were measured at 25 and 32°C. Rates of both ammonia excretion and oxygen consumption increased quickly after feeding

Identification of transcriptome markers in blue catfish cryopreserved sperm to predict male reproductive performance.

IN BRIEF: This study establishes a mechanistic link between sperm-specific transcriptomic profiles and hatch success, demonstrating that a six-gene panel can serve as a statistically robust predictor of hatch success in hybrid catfish aquaculture. ABSTRACT: In hybrid catfish aquaculture, hatch success varies significantly using cryopreserved sperm from different males, but phenotypic assays only explain a fraction of observed variations. We profiled the sperm transcriptome of 30 blue catfish (Ictalurus furcatus) males, whose cryopreserved sperm yielded a hatch success from 14 to 63%. Our tran

Effect of cryoprotectant and concentration on the sperm quality of walking catfish, Clarias batrachus, post-cryopreservation.

BACKGROUND: Walking catfish, Clarias batrachus is one of the native and most popular freshwater catfish species in Indonesia. However, cultivation faces challenges, particularly due to the scarcity of larvae resulting from underdeveloped breeding technologies. Cryopreservation is a method of storing sperm to maintain viability for a long period and support the breeding technology of the fish. Cryoprotectant, in this context, plays an important role in determining the success of sperm cryopreservation. OBJECTIVE: To determine the best type and concentration of cryoprotectant for cryopreservati

Depuration and Starvation Regulate Metabolism and Improve Flesh Quality of Yellow Catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco).

Fat deposition and off-flavor in the muscle are the main problems affecting flesh quality in aquaculture fish, especially in catfish, leading to low acceptability and reduced market price. Yellow catfish is an important aquaculture fish in China. In this study, 40 days of depuration and starvation treatment were explored to improve the muscle quality of aquaculture yellow catfish. After depuration and starvation, the body weight, condition factor (CF) and mesenteric fat index (MFI) were all significantly decreased 20 days after treatment. The metabolomic profiles in muscle were characterized t

Heparan sulfate is the attachment factor associated with channel catfish virus infection on host cells.

Channel catfish virus (CCV; family Alloherpesviridae) infects channel catfish, causing great harm to aquaculture fisheries and economic development. Attachment is the first step in viral infection and relies on the interaction of virions with components of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The present study aimed to explored the role of the main three ECM components in CCV attachment. Western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR analysis showed that neither collagen nor hyaluronic acid treatments had significant effects on CCV attachment. When exogenous heparin was used as a competitive inhib

Trained Immunity Provides Long-Term Protection against Bacterial Infections in Channel Catfish.

Beta glucan exposure induced trained immunity in channel catfish that conferred long-term protection against Edwardsiella ictaluri and Edwardsiella piscicida infections one month post exposure. Flow cytometric analyses demonstrated that isolated macrophages and neutrophils phagocytosed higher amounts of E. ictaluri and E. piscicida. Beta glucan induced changes in the distribution of histone modifications in the monomethylation and trimethylation of H3K4 and modifications in the acetylation and trimethylation of H3K27. KEGG pathway analyses revealed that these modifications affected expressions

Origin and chromatin remodeling of young X/Y sex chromosomes in catfish with sexual plasticity.

Assembly of a complete Y chromosome is a significant challenge in animals with an XX/XY sex-determination system. Recently, we created YY-supermale yellow catfish by crossing XY males with sex-reversed XY females, providing a valuable model for Y-chromosome assembly and evolution. Here, we assembled highly homomorphic Y and X chromosomes by sequencing genomes of the YY supermale and XX female in yellow catfish, revealing their nucleotide divergences with only less than 1% and with the same gene compositions. The sex-determining region (SDR) was identified to locate within a physical distance o

Unique localization of disseminated pancreas in the oesophagus of catfish (clarias gariepinus) with reference to sexual dimorphism.

BACKGROUND: The fish pancreas has been reported to be composed of two portions: compact and disseminated. However, little has been elucidated in catfish. The present study describes a unique localization of the disseminated pancreas in African catfish. METHODS: The sections were obtained and used for either routine histological examination following staining with haematoxylin and eosin (H & E), periodic acid-Schiff's, or were subjected to immunohistochemical staining for detection of both insulin-producing β cells and glucagon-producing alpha cells. RESULTS: Our investigation showed that the

Copper ferrite nanoparticles induced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress in Channel catfish ovary cells.

Nanomaterials are the sixth most emerging contaminants that are entering into aquatic habitat posing a risk to the inhabiting organisms. Nanoparticles of copper ferrite have been extensively used in biomedical applications. However, very limited studies are available on the cytotoxicity evaluation of copper ferrite nanoparticles (CuFe2O4NPs) on different cell lines. The current work investigates on the cytotoxicity, oxidative stress and morphological variations triggered by CuFe2O4NPs in Channel catfish ovary (CCO) cells using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazoliumbromide (MTT),

GDNF family receptor α-1 in the catfish: Possible implication to brain dopaminergic activity.

Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF)is a potent trophic factor that preferentially binds to GDNF family receptor α-1 (GFRα-1)by regulating dopaminergic (DA-ergic) neuronsin brain. Present study aimed to evaluate the significance of GFRα-1 expression during early brain development in catfish. Initially, the full-length cDNA of GFRα-1 was cloned from adult brain which showed high homology with other vertebrate counterparts. Quantitative PCR analysis of tissue distribution revealed ubiquitous expression of GFRα-1 in the tissues analyzed with high levels in female brain and ovary. Si
