Extraction and microencapsulation of khat: effects on sexual motivation and estradiol level in female rats.

INTRODUCTION: Khat (Catha edulis) is an evergreen tree/shrub that is thought to affect sexual motivation or libido. Its positive effect on sexual desire is more frequently observed in females than in males and occurs when khat is chewed. Thus, khat's effects on sexual behavior may depend on the release mode of its active constituent. AIM: This study aimed to investigate the effect of dried khat alkaloids on the sexual motivation and estradiol levels of female rats, with special emphasis on the importance of the sustained release effect. METHODS: Dried khat leaves were extracted and isolated.

Oesophageal and gastric carcinoma in the Republic of Yemen.

We conducted a preliminary survey on 3064 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at the Al-Thawra Hospital in Sana'a, Republic of Yemen, between January and December 1991. The age/sex distribution, demographic features and social habits with respect to cigarette and water-pipe smoking and Qat chewing were compared for patients with oesophageal and gastric cancers (n = 183). A preponderance of women with carcinoma of the mid-oesophageal was noted, previously only recorded in areas of high prevalence. Unlike Western populations, smoking and alcohol consumption were not significa

Environmental triggers of autoimmune hepatitis: a clinical perspective from Yemeni patients.

INTRODUCTION: Autoimmune hepatitis is a chronic inflammatory liver disease in which the immune system attacks liver tissue. While genetic predisposition plays a role, environmental factors are increasingly recognized as contributors to disease onset and progression. This study aimed to examine the association between environmental exposures and autoimmune hepatitis in a Yemeni population. METHODOLOGY: A case-control study was conducted, including 93 patients with clinically diagnosed autoimmune hepatitis and 280 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Data was collected through structured inte

A cross-sectional study of psychopathy and khat abuse among prisoners in the correctional institution in Jimma, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Khat abuse and psychopathy are both strongly related to criminal activity. Higher rates of substance use in people with psychopathy are hypothesized to be related to psychopathic personality traits, which include high sensation seeking, low conscientiousness and neuroticism, impulsivity, and irresponsibility. Little is known, however, about the association between psychopathy and khat abuse among prisoners in Ethiopia. Therefore, we evaluated the presence of these two factors in prisoners in the correctional institution in Jimma, Southwest Ethiopia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used

Problematic khat use as a possible risk factor for harmful use of other psychoactive substances: a mixed method study in Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders along with neuropsychiatric disorders contributed about 14% of the global burden of disease. Harmful alcohol use, is a known contributor for many harms (accidents, suicide, violence, and complication of other psychiatric and medical disorders). In the Western countries, alcohol and nicotine are gateway drugs to cannabis use, and cannabis use is a risk factor for other illicit drugs such as cocaine and heroin. Khat use is another psychoactive substance which is common in East African and Arabian Peninsula. But there is a knowledge gap regarding the position o

Histopathological changes in oral mucosa due to takhzeen al-qat: a study of 70 biopsies.

BACKGROUND: Chewing qat leaves (takhzeen al-qat) is a common habit in East Africa and Yemen. It has been reported to cause different systemic effects. At the oral mucosa, it causes clinical changes that appear as white lesions. The aim of this paper was to study the histopathological changes in the oral mucosa related to takhzeen al-qat. METHOD: Seventy biopsies were studied. Biopsies were divided into three groups: (G1) Forty biopsies were taken from the oral mucosa of the chewing side. (G2) Twenty biopsies were taken from the oral mucosa of the opposite side and (G3) 10 biopsies were taken

Synthetic Cathinones and Neurotoxicity Risks: A Systematic Review.

According to the EU Early Warning System (EWS), synthetic cathinones (SCs) are the second largest new psychoactive substances (NPS) class, with 162 synthetic cathinones monitored by the EU EWS. They have a similar structure to cathinone, principally found in Catha Edulis; they have a phenethylamine related structure but also exhibit amphetamine-like stimulant effects. Illegal laboratories regularly develop new substances and place them on the market. For this reason, during the last decade this class of substances has presented a great challenge for public health and forensic toxicologists. Ac

Khat-induced intravesical coiling of a self-inserted urethral serum set: a rare cause of acute urinary retention requiring open bladder surgery.

BACKGROUND: Foreign bodies within the lower urinary tract are uncommon but clinically significant causes of acute urinary retention and urological emergencies. Self-insertion into the urethra is among the most frequently reported mechanisms and is often associated with psychiatric disorders, intoxication, autoerotic behavior, or altered mental status. Khat (Catha edulis), a widely used psychoactive stimulant in East Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, may contribute to impaired judgment and behavioral disturbances. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a 40-year-old previously healthy man who presented

Unexplained chronic liver disease in Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is assumed to be the major cause of chronic liver disease (CLD) in sub-Saharan Africa. The contribution of other aetiological causes of CLD is less well documented and hence opportunities to modulate other potential risk factors are being lost. The aims of this study were to explore the aetiological spectrum of CLD in eastern Ethiopia and to identify plausible underlying risk factors for its development. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was undertaken between April 2015 and April 2016 in two public hospitals in Harar, eastern Ethiopia. The study p

Oral manifestations of habitual khat chewing: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Khat, or qat (Catha edulis), is a shrub indigenous to Yemen and certain parts of eastern Africa. Chewing the leaves, which have sympathomimetic and euphoric effects, is a popular habit in numerous countries including the Yemenite population in Israel. Khat has potentially significant toxic effects; however, its oral effects have been only sporadically examined and some changes suggested. The aim of this study was to assess the association between habitual Khat use and oral/dental pigmentation, gingival health, and reports of oral dryness. STUDY DESIGN: Forty-seven Y

Khat: A Substance of Growing Abuse with Adverse Drug Interaction Risks.

The growing global availability of the stimulant shrub, khat, has aroused widespread concern. This paper is a review of possible adverse interactions between khat and conventional drugs. Khat chewing has been shown to reduce the bioavailabilities of orally co-administered antibiotics, ampicillin, amoxicillin, cephradine and tetracyclineHCl, and the antimalarial drug, chloroquine. The cardiovascular and central nervous system (CNS) stimulant effects of monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) and amphetamine-like drugs have been described to be enhanced by khat chewing. Khat is recognized to have th

EuroKhat: A pilot study on Khat consumption among Yemeni migrants in Germany.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Khat (Catha edulis), an amphetamine-like stimulant, is deeply rooted in the sociocultural traditions of the Arabian Peninsula and the Horn of Africa, with regular consumption reported by 90 % of men and 50 % of women in Yemen. Beyond its sociocultural role, khat use has been associated with adverse mental health outcomes, including anxiety, insomnia, stress, dysphoric mood, and, in cases of frequent high-dose use, psychosis. Migration to non-khat-producing countries in Europe may alter consumption patterns, yet data on its use among Yemeni migrants in Germany re
