An integrated transcriptome-wide analysis of cave and surface dwelling Astyanax mexicanus.

Numerous organisms around the globe have successfully adapted to subterranean environments. A powerful system in which to study cave adaptation is the freshwater characin fish, Astyanax mexicanus. Prior studies in this system have established a genetic basis for the evolution of numerous regressive traits, most notably vision and pigmentation reduction. However, identification of the precise genetic alterations that underlie these morphological changes has been delayed by limited genetic and genomic resources. To address this, we performed a transcriptome analysis of cave and surface dwelling

Genetic basis of eye and pigment loss in the cave crustacean, Asellus aquaticus.

Understanding the process of evolution is one of the great challenges in biology. Cave animals are one group with immense potential to address the mechanisms of evolutionary change. Amazingly, similar morphological alterations, such as enhancement of sensory systems and the loss of eyes and pigmentation, have evolved multiple times in a diverse assemblage of cave animals. Our goal is to develop an invertebrate model to study cave evolution so that, in combination with a previously established vertebrate cave system, we can address genetic questions concerning evolutionary parallelism and conve

An adolescent female Neandertal mandible from Montgaudier Cave, Charente, France.

In 1974, an incomplete human mandible was discovered in the site of Montgaudier Cave, along the Tardoire (Charente), France. The mandible was found in association with stone tools and animal bones in geological deposits referable to the very end of the Middle Pleistocene or the beginning of the Upper Pleistocene. The mandible preserves much of the anterior part of the body and three permanent teeth: left lateral incisor, canine and first molar. Estimates based on tooth eruption of modern humans, as well as occlusal wear and root development, suggest an age at death of between 12.5 and 14.5 yea

Histoplasma capsulatum. Isolation from an Australian cave environment and from a patient.

The fungus Histoplasma capsulatum, although commonly found in bat-frequented caves in many countries, has not previously been isolated from that environment in Australia. This report describes the isolation of H. capsulatum from several sources, including cave soil, the organs of mice exposed to the cave environment, and the sputum of a patient clinically diagnosed as having acute pulmonary histoplasmosis after exposure to the cave environment.

Dietary data from surface and subterranean populations of Speleomantes cave salamanders.

This dataset enriches the ongoing project "The European plethodontid salamanders' trophic niche project," which focuses on studying the trophic niche of the strictly protected European plethodontid species of the genus Speleomantes. We provide here a dataset that collects dietary data from 36 populations belonging to seven of the eight Speleomantes species (S. strinatii, S. ambrosii, S. italicus, S. flavus, S. imperialis, S. sarrabusensis, S. genei) and the natural hybrid zone S. italicus × S. ambrosii. Eleven populations were sampled in natural and artificial subterranean environments for a t

An anatomical evaluation of trigeminal cave using magnetic resonance imaging in children.

BACKGROUND: To our knowledge, few studies have investigated the anatomy of the Trigeminal cave (TC) with neuroimaging modalities. We aimed to evaluate it using thin-slice magnetic resonance (MR) imaging in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The acquired MR imaging examinations between October 2023 and January 2025 of boys and girls aged ≤ 18 years were performed. Total of 557 patients included in the study. According to age, the study population was divided into five groups: infancy, early childhood, late childhood, prepubescent, and postpubescent. On the sagittal and coronal T2-weighted images

Microbial aerotrophy enables continuous primary production in diverse cave ecosystems.

Aerated caves receive minimal light energy, yet host diverse microbial communities and the strategies allowing them to meet energy and carbon needs remain unclear. We determined the processes and mediators of primary production in aerated limestone and basalt caves through paired metagenomic and biogeochemical profiling. Four caves were sampled, including sediments and biofilms, yielding 94 metagenomes. Based on 1458 metagenome-assembled genomes, over half of microbial cells encode enzymes to use atmospheric trace gases as energy and carbon sources. The most abundant microbes are chemosyntheti

Mapping Histoplasma in Bats and Cave Ecosystems: Evidence from Midwestern Brazil.

UNLABELLED: Caves serve as natural reservoirs for diverse microbial species due to their unique biotic and abiotic conditions. Histoplasma spp. is frequently associated with guano-enriched soil, low luminosity, and high humidity, particularly in Latin America, a region highly endemic for histoplasmosis. Despite the continent's diverse biomes, local environmental and host distributions of Histoplasma remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a Histoplasma -specific quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay targeting the hc100 gene on guano samples from seven bat-inhabited caves

Convergent Community Assembly among Globally Separated Acidic Cave Biofilms.

Acidophilic bacteria and archaea inhabit extreme geochemical "islands" that can tell us when and how geographic barriers affect the biogeography of microorganisms. Here, we describe microbial communities from extremely acidic (pH 0 to 1) biofilms, known as snottites, from hydrogen sulfide-rich caves. Given the extreme acidity and subsurface location of these biofilms, and in light of earlier work showing strong geographic patterns among snottite Acidithiobacillus populations, we investigated their structure and diversity in order to understand how geography might impact community assembly. We

Independent association of the Meckel's cave with trigeminal neuralgia and development of a screening tool.

PURPOSE: To 1) investigate the association of the properties of the Meckel's cave (MC) with TN occurrence (i.e., affected vs. unaffected nerves) and whether such association was independent of neurovascular contact (NVC); and 2) develop an objective screening tool for TN. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two hundred and nineteen trigeminal nerves were included. (The severity of) NVC was identified for individual nerve, and a set of 107 radiomic features were extracted to characterize various properties of each MC. Both procedures were primarily based on magnetic resonance imaging sequences. A radiomic

Malignant lymphomatous invasion of Meckel's cave: pathoanatomical considerations of the petrous apex.

Secondary central nervous system lymphoma is rare, occurring in up to 10% of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma patients and in 5% of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patients. The prognosis is poor, even rarer is metastasis of large B-cell lymphomas into Meckel's cave and the trigeminal nerve roots. We describe a relapsing case of a large B-cell lymphoma that migrated into Meckel's cave, the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve and the adjacent cavernous sinus. We review petrous apex anatomy, review the literature of metastatic spread into Meckel's cave and analyse existing pathoanatomical studies that

Pretemporal trans-Meckel's cave transtentorial approach for large petroclival meningiomas.

OBJECTIVE Despite the advances in skull base techniques, large petroclival meningiomas (PCMs) still pose a challenge to neurosurgeons. The authors' objective of this study was to describe a pretemporal trans-Meckel's cave transtentorial approach for large PCMs and to report the surgical outcomes. METHODS From 2014 to 2017, patients harboring large PCMs (> 3 cm) and undergoing their first resection via this procedure at the authors' institute were included. In combination with pretemporal transcavernous and anterior transpetrosal approaches, the trans-Meckel's cave transtentorial route was crea

Endoscopic endonasal approach to primitive Meckel's cave tumors: a clinical series.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, an alternative endoscopic endonasal approach to Meckel's cave (MC) tumors has been proposed. To date, few studies have evaluated the results of this route. The aim of our study was to evaluate long-term surgical and clinical outcome associated with this technique in a cohort of patients with intrinsic MC tumors. METHODS: All patients with MC tumors treated at out institution by endoscopic endonasal approach (EEA) between 2002 and 2016 were included. Patients underwent brain MRI, CT angiography, and neurological evaluation before surgery. Complications were considered b

Oncogenic osteomalacia caused by occult nasal mesenchymal tumor: a monster in the cave.

Authors describe a case of oncogenic osteomalacia in a 35-year-old man, who presented with a 2-year history of generalized pain and progressive weakness of lower limbs, eventually became bedbound. At admission, he had severe hip pain resulting from bilateral femoral neck fractures. Laboratory investigations revealed hypophosphatemia, hyperphosphaturia, normocalcemia, elevated alkaline phosphatase and normal serum levels of parathormone and 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Serum fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) level was elevated. A radiographic skeletal survey showed osteoporosis and insufficiency frac

A reassessment of the presumed Neandertal remains from San Bernardino Cave, Italy.

In 1986-1987, three human remains were unearthed from macro-unit II of San Bernardino Cave (Berici Hills, Veneto, Italy), a deposit containing a late Mousterian lithic assemblage. The human remains (a distal phalanx, a lower right third molar and a lower right second deciduous incisor) do not show diagnostic morphological features that could be used to determine whether they were from Homo neanderthalensis or Homo sapiens. Despite being of small size, and thus more similar to recent H. sapiens, the specimens were attributed to Neandertals, primarily because they were found in Mousterian layers
