Primary CNS plasmablastic lymphoma: report of a case with CSF cytology, flow cytometry, radiology, histological correlation, and review of the literature.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare subtype of diffuse large B cell lymphoma and commonly presents as an oral mass in HIV patients. Extraoral PBL has been reported, including one case of primary central nervous system PBL (PCNSPBL). The cytological features of PBL have been described, including cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology findings for secondary CNS involvement by PBL. The etiology of PCNSPBL is still unknown. We report here the CSF cytology of a PCNSPBL, which shows a hypercellular specimen composed of markedly atypical, singly dispersed plasmacytoid cells with frequent abnormal mito

Neuronal organization of the cochlear nuclei in alligator lizards: a light and electron microscopic investigation.

The organization of neurons and fibers in the cochlear nuclei of the alligator lizard (Gerrhonotus multicarinatus) was examined with light and electron microscopy. In this species, much is known about the anatomy and physiology of the inner ear including the cochlear nerve, but little is known about the synaptic connections of cochlear fibers on second-order neurons. These data will help to develop general principles addressing the cellular organization of the vertebrate auditory system. Subdivisions of the cochlear nuclei were defined on the basis of their histologic appearance and neuronal c

Size-selective neuronal changes in the anterior optic pathways suggest a differential susceptibility to injury in multiple sclerosis.

Axonal damage is found in both acute and chronic lesions of multiple sclerosis. Direct axon counting in post-mortem tissue has suggested that smaller axons might have a greater susceptibility to damage, but methodological limitations have precluded unequivocal interpretation. However, as neuronal and axonal sizes are linked and neuronal changes would be expected with retrograde or transsynaptic degeneration following axon injury, we hypothesized that an alternative strategy for studying this phenomenon would be to define multiple sclerosis-associated changes in neurones. To test this hypothesi

Intranuclear inclusion bodies in recurrent aphthous ulcers with a herpetiform pattern.

Spherical granular and filamentous intranuclear bodies were found in the marginal epithelial cells of recurrent aphthous ulcers with a herpetiform pattern. They ranged from 0.8 to 1.2 mu in size with one to four bodies being present in any one nucleus. Because of their size and the demonstrated lack of DNA or RNA, it was thought that they were not viral in nature, as has been previously reported. It is hypothesized that intranuclear bodies of the type found in this study represent a common manifestation of altered cellular metabolsim produced by several etiologic factors.

Motoneurons innervating guinea pig perineal muscles are sexually dimorphic in size but not number.

Sexual differentiation occurs prenatally in guinea pigs but extends into the postnatal period in rats. Steroids affect the development of two motoneuron nuclei of the rat lumbar spinal cord that innervate sexually dimorphic perineal muscles. The spinal nucleus of the bulbocavernosus (SNB) innervates the bulbocavernosus (BC) and levator ani (LA) muscles while the dorsolateral nucleus (DLN) innervates the ischiocavernosus (IC). In male rats, perinatal testosterone prevents degeneration of these muscles and results in a sex difference in both motoneuron size and number in adulthood. For comparati

Pubertal growth of the medial amygdala delayed by short photoperiods in the Siberian hamster, Phodopus sungorus.

We investigated whether puberty influences the morphology of the medial nucleus of the amygdala (MeA) by comparing Siberian hamsters (Phodopus sungorus) that had been raised from birth in either long day (LD; 16:8 h light:dark) or short day (SD; 8:16) photoperiods. Hamsters were sacrificed at 42-49 days of age, at which point all LD hamsters were reproductively mature, as evidenced by adult-like testes weights (mean: 657 mg). In contrast, the testes weights of the SD hamsters were low (mean: 31 mg), indicating that the SD photoperiod had delayed puberty. The regional volume and mean soma size

Activation of muscarinic receptors in rat parotid acinar cells induces AQP5 trafficking to nuclei and apical plasma membrane.

BACKGROUND: The subcellular distribution of aquaporin-5 (AQP5) in rat parotid acinar cells in response to muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) activation remains unclear. METHODS: Immunoconfocal and immunoelectron microscopy were used to visualize the distribution of AQP5 in parotid acinar cells. Western blotting was used to analyze AQP5 levels in membranes. To clarify the characteristics of membrane domains associated with AQP5, detergent solubility and sucrose-density flotation experiments were performed. RESULTS: Under control conditions, AQP5 was diffusely distributed on the apical

Silk fibroin porous scaffolds for nucleus pulposus tissue engineering.

Intervertebral discs (IVDs) are structurally complex tissue that hold the vertebrae together and provide mobility to spine. The nucleus pulposus (NP) degeneration often results in degenerative IVD disease that is one of the most common causes of back and neck pain. Tissue engineered nucleus pulposus offers an alternative approach to regain the function of the degenerative IVD. The aim of this study is to determine the feasibility of porous silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds fabricated by paraffin-sphere-leaching methods with freeze-drying in the application of nucleus pulposus regeneration. The prepa

Immunocytochemical localization and description of neurons expressing serotonin2 receptors in the rat brain.

Serotonin2 receptors have been implicated in a variety of behavioral and physiological processes, as well as a number of neuropsychiatric disorders. To specify the brain regions and specific cell types possessing serotonin2 receptors, we conducted an immunocytochemical study of the rat brain using a polyclonal serotonin2 receptor antibody. Perfusion-fixed rat brain sections were processed for immunocytochemistry and reactivity was visualized using an immunoperoxidase reaction. Numerous small, round neurons were heavily labeled in the granular and periglomerular regions of the olfactory bulb. H

[Cytoarchitecture and topography of the ventromedial hypothalamic nuclei of swine (Sus scrofa domestica)].

The topography and cytoarchitecture of nc. hypothalamicus ventromedialis, nc. hypothalamicus dorsomedialis and nc. infundibularis were descripted in the pig. The nc. hypothalamicus ventromedialis is the dominant nucleus in the tuber cinereum. The rostral pole lies caudal to the nc. hypothalamicus anterior. Its caudal pole is bounded by the nc. premamillaris and the nc. hypothalamicus ventrolateralis. Scattered neurons separate the nc. hypothalamicus ventromedialis dorsal from the nc. hypothalamicus dorsomedialis. Dorsolateral it is limited by the fornix and medial from the ventricular wall by

To the approximate size of the nuclear region occupied by nucleolar bodies during cell differentiation and maturation using the human leukemic granulocytic lineage as a convenient model.

The present study was undertaken to estimate the approximate size of nuclear regions occupied by nucleolar bodies during the cell differentiation and maturation. The differentiation and maturation of human leukemic granulocytic cells in patients suffering from the chronic phase of the chronic granulocytic leukemia (CML) represented a convenient model for such study because of the large number of cells for the diameter measurements at the single cell level. Early and advanced differentiation or maturation stages of these cells are well defined and nucleolar bodies and nuclear outlines are easil

Morphometric analysis of chronic B-cell leukemias--an aid to the classification of lymphoid cell types.

In order to evaluate the ultrastructural features which may be of relevance in distinguishing cells from the various chronic B-cell leukemias, a morphometric analysis was performed on a large number of cells from each disease group. The parameters selected were: cell size, nucleo: cytoplasmic ratio, chromatin condensation, size of the nucleolus and degree of irregularity of both the nucleus and the cytoplasmic outlines. The mean values obtained for each parameter for each disease group were compared statistically. In disorders in which the cells have villous cytoplasmic projections, the quanti

Cytometrical and immunocytochemical investigation of brain nuclei in dementia.

Morphometrical investigation of brain nuclei in dementia of the Alzheimertyme and in other types of dementia has been done for the last 10 years. The N. Basalis of Meynert (Acetylcholine pathway) has been screened rather extensively by several groups. The L. Coeruleus (Nor-adrenergic pathway) also has been fairly well documented. The N. Raphe Dorsalis however-an important relay nucleus in the serotonergic pathway-was only studied cytometrically by a few groups. Other nuclei were not investigated systematically f.e. N. Accumbens; this nucleus might play an important role however in memory distu

Overexpression of ATP5F1A in Cardiomyocytes Promotes Cardiac Reverse Remodeling.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of cardiac reverse remodeling (CRR) mediated by the left ventricular assist device remains unclear. This study aims to identify the specific cell type responsible for CRR and develop the therapeutic target that promotes CRR. METHODS: The nuclei were extracted from the left ventricular tissue of 4 normal controls, 4 CRR patients, and 4 no cardiac reverse remodeling patients and then subjected to single-nucleus RNA sequencing for identifying key cell types responsible for CRR. Sciatic nerve axotomy in aged rats: response of motoneurons and the effect of GM1 ganglioside treatment.

The number, size, and staining intensity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT)-immunopositive cells in the retrodorsal lateral nucleus (RDLN) of the spinal cord were studied in young (3-5 months old) and aged (22-24 months old) rats following left sciatic nerve distal transection (axotomy) and treatment with GM1 ganglioside. The cell size and the ChAT immunostaining density were decreased in the RDLN of non-manipulated as well as in the contralateral intact side of axotomized aged rats. Axotomy had no effect on the number of RDLN motoneurons in both aged and young rats. In the young rats, there

Retinorecipient areas in the diurnal murine rodent Arvicanthis niloticus: a disproportionally large superior colliculus.

The Nile grass rat (Arvicanthis niloticus) has a high proportion of cone photoreceptors (∼30-40%) compared with that in the common laboratory mouse and rat (∼1-3%) and may prove a preferable murine model with which to study cone-driven information processing in retina and primary visual centers. However, other than regions involved in circadian control, little is known about the retinorecipient structures in this rodent. We undertook a detailed analysis of the retinal projections as revealed after intravitreal injection of the anterograde tracer cholera toxin subunit B. Retinal efferents were

Nucleus subputaminalis (Ayala): the still disregarded magnocellular component of the basal forebrain may be human specific and connected with the cortical speech area.

The small magnocellular group located within the rostrolateral extension of the basal forebrain was named and described as the nucleus subputaminalis in the human and chimpanzee brain by Ayala. Analysis of cytoarchitectonic and cytochemical characteristics of this cell group has been largely disregarded in both classical and more current studies. We examined the nucleus subputaminalis in 33 neurologically normal subjects (ranging from 15 weeks of gestation to 71 years-of-age) by using Nissl staining, choline acetyltransferase immunohistochemistry, acetyl cholinesterase histochemistry and nerve

Ebselen alleviates testicular pathology in mice with Zika virus infection and prevents its sexual transmission.

Despite the low case fatality, Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has been associated with microcephaly in infants and Guillain-Barré syndrome. Antiviral and vaccine developments against ZIKV are still ongoing; therefore, in the meantime, preventing the disease transmission is critical. Primarily transmitted by Aedes species mosquitoes, ZIKV also can be sexually transmitted. We used AG129 mice lacking interferon-α/β and -γ receptors to study the testicular pathogenesis and sexual transmission of ZIKV. Infection of ZIKV progressively damaged mouse testes, increased testicular oxidative stress as indic

The development of the retinogeniculate pathways in normal and albino ferrets.

The retinogeniculate pathways of normal and albino ferrets have been studied with horseradish peroxidase and tritiated proline used as axonal markers. The uncrossed retinogeniculate projection of adult albino ferrets is abnormally small and occupies only a fraction of the geniculate area normally occupied by uncrossed afferents. The crossed pathway is correspondingly expanded, occupying almost the entire nucleus. The geniculate laminae in the albino ferret are abnormal, showing abnormal fusions between layers receiving crossed input and abnormal discontinuities next to the small cell islands r
