Selective Oxidation of 2-Hydroxypropyl Ethers of Cellulose and Dextran: Simple and Efficient Introduction of Versatile Ketone Groups to Polysaccharides.

Oxidation of polysaccharides has been a useful approach to new materials. However, selectivity in oxidation of polysaccharide macromolecular polyols remains a significant challenge with few methods for the synthesis of ketone-substituted polysaccharides. We report here a selective, practical, and efficient process, beginning with 2-hydroxypropyl ethers of polysaccharides that are simple and economical to prepare. We demonstrate this approach herein using commercial 2-hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and 2-hydroxypropyl dextran (HPD) that we prepared. We oxidize the terminal, secondary alcohols of

Multilayer membranes of graphene oxide nanosheets on cellulose filter papers for high-flux water filtration and high proton conductivity.

Two-dimensional graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets have emerged as multifunctional units for synthesizing nanostructured membranes for water filtration and proton transport technologies. In this research, advanced GO synthesis were conducted to produce GO dispersions at appropriate concentrations for building primary and secondary layers on cellulose filter papers (Cel). The primary GO layer on the largely porous Cel was formed by vacuum filtration of a GO dispersion 240 ppm. Subsequently, a secondary GO layer was built using a GO dispersion 60 ppm, covering microscale cracks on the primary layer.

Intrafibrillar Dispersion of Cuprous Oxide (Cu2O) Nanoflowers within Cotton Cellulose Fabrics for Permanent Antibacterial, Antifungal and Antiviral Activity.

With increasingly frequent highly infectious global pandemics, the textile industry has responded by developing commercial fabric products by incorporating antibacterial metal oxide nanoparticles, particularly copper oxide in cleaning products and personal care items including antimicrobial wipes, hospital gowns and masks. Current methods use a surface adsorption method to functionalize nanomaterials to fibers. However, this results in poor durability and decreased antimicrobial activity after consecutive launderings. In this study, cuprous oxide nanoparticles with nanoflower morphology (Cu2O

Sonocatalytic degradation of tetracycline antibiotic using zinc oxide nanostructures loaded on nano-cellulose from waste straw as nanosonocatalyst.

The aim of the present investigation was the combination of ZnO nanostructures with nano-cellulose (NC) for the efficient degradation of tetracycline (TC) antibiotic under ultrasonic irradiation. The removal efficiency of 12.8% was obtained by the sole use of ultrasound (US), while the removal efficiency increased up to 70% by the US/ZnO treatment process. Due to the integration of ZnO nanostructures with NC, the removal efficiency of 87.6% was obtained within 45 min. The removal efficiency substantially decreased in the presence of tert-butyl alcohol (more than 25% reduction), indicating that

Janus bilayer fibrous membrane of polyethylene oxide-chitosan@cellulose acetate with directional water transport for efficient pork and cherry preservation.

A Janus bilayer fibrous membrane was fabricated via electrospinning combined with layer-by-layer self-assembly technology for the preservation of pork and cherries. This Janus membrane consists of a superhydrophilic layer prepared from polyethylene oxide-chitosan (PEO-CS) and a hydrophobic layer composed of cellulose acetate (CA). PEO and CS are interconnected via intermolecular hydrogen bonds. The asymmetric wettability on both sides of the membrane endows it with "fluid diode" properties, enabling the membrane to spontaneously absorb water from the pork surface. The PEO-CS@CA Janus fibrous m

Cellulose Nanofiber-Graphene Oxide Biohybrids: Disclosing the Self-Assembly and Copper-Ion Adsorption Using Advanced Microscopy and ReaxFF Simulations.

The self-assembly of nanocellulose and graphene oxide into highly porous biohybrid materials has inspired the design and synthesis of multifunctional membranes for removing water pollutants. The mechanisms of self-assembly, metal ion capture, and cluster formation on the biohybrids at the nano- and molecular scales are quite complex. Their elucidation requires evidence from the synergistic combination of experimental data and computational models. The AFM-based microscopy studies of (2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxylradical)-mediated oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNFs), graphene oxide (G

Analysis of thermal oxidation of different multi-element oleogels based on carnauba wax, β-sitosterol/lecithin, and ethyl cellulose by classical oxidation determination method combined with the electronic nose.

Thermal oxidation of different multi-element oleogels (DMEOs) was assessed by measuring the peroxide, p-anisidine, and total antioxidant values. Moreover, a rapid discriminant model for determining oleogel oxidation was established using an electronic nose combined with cluster analysis (CA), principal component analysis (PCA), discriminant factor analysis (DFA), and linear discriminant analysis (LDA). The oxidation degree of the oleogels was sensitive to their gelation temperature. The oleogels prepared with ethyl cellulose showed the highest oxidation value compared with those prepared with

Carboxymethyl Cellulose-Induced Phase Transformation of Metal-Organic Framework-Derived Vanadium Oxides for High-Rate and High-Capacity Zinc Storage.

Conventional synthesis of metal oxides from metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) precursors typically relies on high-temperature pyrolysis, which inherits the structural advantages of MOFs but is energy-intensive. Herein, we report a low-energy hydrothermal transformation strategy to fabricate two phase-pure vanadium oxides (VO2 and V3O7·H2O) without high temperature treatment. The tunnel-structured VO2 nanobelts with high oxygen vacancy defects can be obtained by the function of water-soluble polymer sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), which plays a critical phase-directing role by coordinating

Chitosan/cellulose nanocrystals/graphene oxide scaffolds as a potential pH-responsive wound dressing: Tuning physico-chemical, pro-regenerative and antimicrobial properties.

Chronic wounds (CWs) treatment still represents a demanding medical challenge. Several intrinsic physiological signals (i.e., pH) help to stimulate and support wound healing. CWs, in fact, are characterized by a predominantly alkaline pH of the exudate, which acidifies as the wound heals. Therefore, pH-responsive wound dressings hold great potential owing to their capability of tuning their functions according to the wound conditions. Herein, porous chitosan (CS)-based scaffolds loaded with cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) and graphene oxide (GO) were successfully fabricated using a freeze-drying

β-(1 → 4)-Polyglucuronic acids with C2/C3-ketones prepared from regenerated cellulose by catalytic oxidation using solid NaOCl·5H2O.

Three commercial regenerated cellulose samples were subjected to TEMPO-catalyzed oxidation using solid NaOCl·5H2O as the primary oxidant for structural analyses of the oxidized products (TEMPO = 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl). The regenerated cellulose/water slurries became transparent solutions after oxidation for 60 min. The yields of the oxidized products were almost 100 % when they were isolated as precipitates in ethanol/water mixtures. The solution-state NMR spectra revealed that the oxidized products were almost pure water-soluble β-(1 → 4)-polyglucuronic acids; the reaction cond
