A probable case of non-syndromic brachycephaly from 16th century Sardinia (Italy).

The skeleton of a 9- to 10-year-old child showing a case of skull malformation due to premature bilateral closure of the coronal suture was encountered during the excavation of a Sardinian plague cemetery ("Lo Quarter") dating to the 1582-1583 Alghero plague outbreak. The skull is deformed, with increased bi-parietal diameter, marked frontal and parietal bosses, shallow orbits, and a palpable ridge perpendicular to the coronal suture. Digitate impressions are observable on both fronto-parietal regions of the skull's inner table. Since the splanchnocranium has not preserved, it is impossible to

A probable case of multiple myeloma from Bronze Age China.

OBJECTIVE: Paleopathological evidence of cancer from past populations is rare, especially outside of Europe and North Africa. This study expands upon the current temporal and spatial distribution of cancer by presenting a probable case of multiple myeloma from Bronze Age China. MATERIAL: The human skeletal remains of an adult male from the Qijia culture horizon (1750-1400 BCE) of the Bronze Age cemetery of Mogou (), located in Gansu Province, Northwest China. METHODS: The human skeletal remains were assessed macroscopically and radiographically using plain x-rays. RESULTS: Multiple ovoid-sh

A probable case of congenital syphilis from pre-Columbian Austria.

This study examines the skeletal remains of a subadult from an archeological site in Austria. Radiocarbon dating and archeological attribution indicate that this individual is of pre-Columbian origin. Most of the skeleton was recovered, and only the teeth and the orbital roofs show changes. Dental defects such as the mulberry molar and a tapered, fang-like canine suggest a diagnosis of congenital syphilis. This is the first probable case of congenital syphilis from pre-Columbian Central Europe. Our findings contribute to the pre-Columbian theory, offering counter evidence to the assumption tha

The prevalence of dislocation in developmental dysplasia of the hip in Britain over the past thousand years.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study is to determine whether dislocation in developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is changing in prevalence over time. This would allow us to see if modern improvements in diet, health, and obstetric care had any effect upon the likelihood of developing DDH. METHODS: The material used was a large medieval skeletal collection excavated from Britain (6580 hips). The cemetery was in use from approximately AD 1100 to 1530. RESULTS: The prevalence in the medieval series was found to be 2.7 per 1000. DISCUSSION: This prevalence was comparable with published clinica

Altered shapes, same people: Scaphocephaly in the early modern Bucharest.

Premature sagittal suture synostosis was identified in eight specimens dated between the 18th and 20th centuries CE, of which seven are kept within the Rainer Osteological Collection in Bucharest and one was retrieved from the archaeologically investigated Saint Sava Church Cemetery. Our study focused on metric measurements, aiming to compare these specimens with three other samples comprising normal and scaphocephalic individuals, with both a Romanian and worldwide distribution. In total, 374 individuals were used in this study. However, although metric measurements clearly show that these in

"The quiet necrosis": An early medieval case of multifocal juvenile osteochondritis dissecans of the knee.

BACKGROUND: osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) is an ancient disease with few well-described cases in paleopathological records. Here, we report a very rare case of OCD on both lateral femoral condyles and on the lateral condyle of the right tibia in an early medieval human skeleton. METHODS: macroscopic examination of the bone vestiges of a young male unearthed from a 6th-8th Lombard cemetery in the northeast Italy was perform. RESULTS: We observed a circular crater-like depression with well-defined smooth margins and exposure of the trabecular bone on both lateral femoral condyles and in the

Early Lapita skeletons from Vanuatu show Polynesian craniofacial shape: Implications for Remote Oceanic settlement and Lapita origins.

With a cultural and linguistic origin in Island Southeast Asia the Lapita expansion is thought to have led ultimately to the Polynesian settlement of the east Polynesian region after a time of mixing/integration in north Melanesia and a nearly 2,000-y pause in West Polynesia. One of the major achievements of recent Lapita research in Vanuatu has been the discovery of the oldest cemetery found so far in the Pacific at Teouma on the south coast of Efate Island, opening up new prospects for the biological definition of the early settlers of the archipelago and of Remote Oceania in general. Osteogenesis imperfecta in the archeological record: An example from the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt.

The present study evaluates a fetal skeleton (B532) from the Romano-Byzantine period Kellis 2 cemetery (circa A.D. 50-A.D. 450), in the Dakhleh Oasis, Egypt. This skeleton displays abnormal skeletal characteristics consisting of severe bowing of the long bones. Differential diagnoses using macroscopic and radiographic analyses indicate that this individual's pathological condition was caused by osteogenesis imperfecta (IO), possibly Type IIB/III, or Type IV OI, corroborating with characteristics reported in the clinical literature. Due to the severe bowing of the long bones, traditional aging

Paleopathological description and diagnosis of metastatic carcinoma in an Early Bronze Age (4588+34 Cal. BP) forager from the Cis-Baikal region of Eastern Siberia.

Extensive osteolytic and osteoblastic lesions were observed on the skeletal remains of an adult male excavated from an Early Bronze Age cemetery dated to 4556+32 years BP, located in the Cis-Baikal region of Siberia (Russian Federation). Lytic lesions ranged in size from several mm to over 60 mm in diameter and had irregular, moth-eaten borders. Many of these lesions destroyed trabecular bone, though a hollowed shell of cortical bone often remained observable. Radiographic analysis revealed numerous lytic lesions within trabecular bone that had not yet affected the cortex. Blastic lesions were

Skeletal indicators of reactive arthritis: A case study comparison to other skeletal conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, ankylosing sero-negative SpA, and DISH.

In this case study we report a unique modern case of severe reactive arthritis (Reiter's Syndrome) observed on an elderly Cypriot female from the St. Nicholas cemetery in Limassol, Cyprus and the successful differential diagnosis of the condition. The individual exhibited lesions specific to fusion of the thoracic and lumbar spinal column, primarily along the posterior aspect of the spine with sacroiliac fusion, fusion of the left femoral head within the acetabulum, no intervertebral fusion, and severe Launois's deformity with no corresponding fusion or arthritis mutilans of the hands. Time after time: individuals with multiple fractures and injury recidivists in long eighteenth-century (c. 1666-1837) London.

Investigating injury recidivism and individuals with multiple injuries is an area of growing interest in bioarchaeology. Differentiating between whether an individual sustained multiple injuries, represented by antemortem healed fractures, in one incident or in multiple incidents over the life course, is a major challenge. This research analyzed the skeletal remains of 721 adults (402 males, 319 females) from five post-medieval cemeteries from London, UK, known to include working class individuals for evidence of skeletal trauma - fractures, myositis ossificans, subluxations/dislocations, blun

Dying of pestilence: Stature and mortality from the Black Death in 14th-century Kyrgyzstan.

OBJECTIVES: Bioarchaeological studies have provided important information about mortality patterns during the second pandemic of plague, including the Black Death, but most to date have focused on European contexts. This study represents a spatial contribution to plague bioarchaeology, focusing on Central Asia, the origin of the second pandemic. We examine the relationship between stature and plague mortality during an outbreak of plague at Kara-Djigach in northern Kyrgyzstan in 1338-1339, the earliest archaeological site known to contain victims of the Black Death in Eurasia. METHODS: This s

The Oral Health of a Group of 19th Century South Australian Settlers in Relation to Their General Health and Compared with That of Contemporaneous Samples.

The aims of this study are to determine the oral health status of a rare sample of 19th-century migrant settlers to South Australia, how oral conditions may have influenced their general health, and how the oral health of this group compares with contemporaneous samples in Australia, New Zealand, and Britain. Dentitions of 18 adults and 22 subadults were investigated using non-destructive methods (micro-CT, macroscopic, radiographic). Extensive carious lesions were identified in seventeen adults and four subadults, and from this group one subadult and sixteen adults had antemortem tooth loss.

Multi-year evolutionary dynamics of West Nile virus in suburban Chicago, USA, 2005-2007.

West Nile virus has evolved in concert with its expansion across North America, but little is known about the evolutionary dynamics of the virus on local scales. We analysed viral nucleotide sequences from mosquitoes collected in 2005, 2006, and 2007 from a known transmission 'hot spot' in suburban Chicago, USA. Within this approximately 11 x 14 km area, the viral envelope gene has increased approximately 0.1% yr(-1) in nucleotide-level genetic diversity. In each year, viral diversity was higher in 'residential' sites characterized by dense housing than in more open 'urban green space' sites s

Epidemiology of osteoarthritis and enthesopathies in a European population dating back 7700 years.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the epidemiology of bone changes related to degenerative joint disease and enthesopathies in the earliest Neolithic population identified in Europe (dated back 7700 years), to compare the findings with those in medieval and contemporary populations, and to draw etiological inferences. METHODS: Examination of the skeletal remains of 119 individuals older than 20 years of age at death and buried in two Central European cemeteries dated as far back as 7700 years (5700 BC). RESULTS: The propensity for developing degenerative disease seemed to vary among individuals, as

The Difficult Task of Diagnosing Prostate Cancer Metastases on Dry Bone.

The interpretation of pathology on skeletal remains is mandatory for implementing the biological profile and for disease recognition. Prostate cancer is one of the most common tumors, with a high preference for the skeleton as a primary site of metastasis. Its diagnosis on bone is however still ambiguous, due to its "osteoblastic" and resorptive manifestation. This study investigates distribution and appearance of prostate cancer metastases on dry bone on six known cases (selected from the Milano Cemetery Skeletal Collection) and one healthy individual. A macroscopic inspection was performed h
