PURPOSE: Neighborhood characteristics shape sexual risk in HIV-uninfected adults in the United States (US). We assess relationships between census tract characteristics and sexual risk behaviors in a predominantly HIV-infected cohort of women living in the Southern US.
METHODS: This cross-sectional multilevel analysis included data from 737 HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women enrolled in the Women's Interagency HIV Study. Administrative data captured characteristics of census tracts where women lived; participant-level data were gathered via survey. We used principal components analysis to

In Los Angeles, air pollution disproportionately impacts communities of color and low-income residents. Routine city-wide measurements of hazardous air pollutants (HAPs), of concern for health and contributing to urban air pollution, are notably lacking. In this study, we use the highest spatially resolved (∼2 km) measurements of emissions and concentrations ever reported of HAPs while covering a whole megacity and combine observations with US Census information. We observe higher concentrations and emissions of 17 measured HAPs, such as benzene, naphthalene, and p-chlorobenzotrifluoride (PCBT

Following recent research in Great Britain, the geographic incidence of leukemia and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma among White children in three metropolitan regions of the United States (San Francisco-Oakland, CA; Detroit, MI; and Atlanta, GA) during 1978-82 has been analyzed using census tract-specific data. There was no evidence of a general tendency for cases to cluster geographically, in contrast to results from Britain. Further, rates did not vary with median income or education levels for census tracts. However, there was a statistically significant increasing trend in incidence rates with inc

Despite growing interest in the social determinants of hypertension, nationally representative studies examining intra-urban effects of individual and contextual socioeconomic conditions within unequal urban areas, such as those in Latin America, remain scarce. This study describes gender disparities in the association of individual and contextual socioeconomic conditions with hypertension among older adults residing in urban areas of Brazil. We analyzed data from 6,767 participants from the baseline (2015-2016) of the Brazilian Longitudinal Study of Aging (ELSI-Brazil), a nationally represent

OBJECTIVE: Access to specialized orthopedic care is an important determinant of the decision to undergo total knee replacement (TKR); however, most studies have mainly used distance to the nearest high-volume hospital as the primary proxy for access. We applied the two-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method to develop a more comprehensive TKR access score that accounts for other potential factors (ie, supply of and demand for this procedure) that also affect access.
METHODS: To apply the 2SFCA method, we first estimated TKR demand using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention esti

PURPOSE: In the United States, Black females are burdened by more aggressive subtypes and increased mortality from breast cancer compared to non-Hispanic (NH) White females. Institutional racism may contribute to these inequities. We aimed to characterize the association between home mortgage discrimination, a novel measure of institutional racism, and incidence of Luminal A and triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) subtypes among NH Black and NH White females in California metropolitan areas.
METHODS: We merged data from the California Cancer Registry on females aged 20 + diagnosed with prima

Risk factors for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and multiple myeloma (MM) include exposure to toxic chemicals present in tobacco smoke, as well as to emissions from industrial operations and petroleum refinery waste dumps. The study reported here identified these risk factors among case patients and control patients in Orange County, California, from 1984 to 1993 and determined the significance of the risk factors in the study population. A case-control study was performed for 604 cases of AML and 643 cases of MM; there were 7,112 control subjects who had colon cancer. The model included the var

Freshwater cyanobacterial blooms have increased in geographic distribution and intensity in recent decades worldwide. Cyanotoxins produced by many of these blooms, such as microcystins, are observed to play a role in tumor promotion and have been associated with increased liver cancer rates at the population level. Exposure occurs primarily via contaminated water (ingestion, inhalation, dermal contact), either from treated drinking water or during recreation in impacted surface waters; additional sources of exposure include consumption of fresh produce grown in cyanotoxin-contaminated environm

Sociodemographic correlates of engagement in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) care are well studied, however the association with accessing drug resistance testing (DRT) and the development of drug resistance have not been characterized. Between 1996-2014, 11 801 HIV patients accessing therapy in British Columbia were observed longitudinally. A subset of 9456 patients had testable viral load; of these 8398 were linked to census data. Sociodemographic (census tract-level) and clinical (individual-level) correlates of DRT were assessed using multivariable General Estimating Equation logistic r

BACKGROUND: Like other countries, Canada's population is aging, and the implications of this demographic change need to be better understood from the perspective of blood supply. Analysis of donor data will help to identify systematic patterns of donation and its correlates.
DATA: Geo-coded blood donor and donor clinic data are provided by Canadian Blood Services. Blood donor data is provided for the fiscal year 2006-2007 indicating the total number of donors for each Canadian postal code, excluding the province of Québec. Potential correlates of blood donation are selected based on social an

BACKGROUND: Collegiate alcohol consumption is multi-determined by both precollege (e.g., institutional and community background, academic characteristics, precollege drinking) and college variables. However, precollege variables are rarely investigated. Self-reports of collegiate alcohol use were predicted by novel sources of data from university, census, and public administrative records.
METHOD: 3,720 first-time, college freshmen at a large, public, Midwestern university (54% female) participated in a longitudinal study of self-reported drinking prior to matriculation and the first four sem

Liver transplantation : official publication of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and the International Liver Transplantation Society2025eng
Early liver transplant (ELT) is the practice of liver transplant for those with severe alcohol-associated hepatitis or acute on chronic alcohol-associated liver disease, without requiring any minimum pre-transplant abstinence period. It is an increasingly adopted practice for alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) capable of providing excellent outcomes, but there are concerns regarding equity in access to ELT. Our objectives were (1) to quantify the association between social determinants of health (SDoH) and progression from referral to listing, and (2) to identify geographic disparities in

OBJECTIVES: Public Health officials are often challenged to effectively allocate limited resources. Social determinants of health (SDOH) may cluster in areas to cause unique profiles related to various adverse life events. The authors use the framework of unintended teen pregnancies to illustrate how to identify the most vulnerable neighborhoods.
METHODS: This study used data from the U.S. American Community Survey, Princeton Eviction Lab, and Connecticut Office of Vital Records. Census tracts are small statistical subdivisions of a county. Latent class analysis (LCA) was employed to separate

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted access to school meal programs, putting children and adolescents at greater risk for food and nutrition insecurity. In response, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) waived restrictions on where free meal sites (FMS) operating through its summer meal programs could locate. This study assesses whether and how the distribution of FMS across communities and access to them changed after the waiver.
METHODS: This study used administrative and survey data on all FMS and census tracts in Texas for July 2019, before the waiver, and July 2020, after the w

We estimate the effect of neighborhood characteristics on the mortality of poor black male youth in families relocated through the Gautreaux Assisted Housing Program, a residential mobility program implemented in Chicago, USA in 1976. Within our sample (N=2850), 52 post-placement deaths were observed, the majority of which (30) were homicides. All-cause and homicide mortality rates were substantially lower among those relocating to Census tracts with higher fractions of residents with college degrees, which suggests that relocating to more-advantaged neighborhoods can ameliorate the mortality

Spatial analysis of epidemiological data can be a useful tool for identifying patterns of disease occurrence and can provide substantial support for prevention and control strategies. To obtain the greatest spatial resolution, it is important to use the smallest available areal units with homogeneous population. However, small areas usually have a small population, introducing spurious variability in the chosen indicators of disease occurrence. This paper describes an approach for combining small geographical units to stabilize mortality rates by pooling information across areas according to s

Living in a neighborhood with a high count of tobacco retailers (i.e., tobacco retailer availability, TRA) is associated with youth and adult tobacco use behaviors. As such, policies that reduce TRA have been identified as an important intervention for reducing tobacco use and achieving an equitable tobacco endgame. Zoning regulations could be leveraged as an innovative policy tool to reduce inequities in TRA, especially in states that may preempt local tobacco retail licensing. This study analyzed TRA inequities by zoning designations and sociodemographic characteristics in Oklahoma City and

This study examines the association between community incarceration rates, household incarceration, and the mental health of parents and children. Participant families had children ages 5-9 (n = 1307) from the African American, Latinx, Hmong, Somali/Ethiopian, Native American, and White communities in the Twin Cities, Minnesota. Linear mixed models were used to estimate associations between parent and child mental health, household incarceration exposure, and census tract race, ethnicity and gender-specific incarceration rates matched to the family's home address and race/ethnicity.
