Body weight deficit in the absence of reduction in cerebrum weight and nucleic acid content in progeny of swine restricted in protein intake during pregnancy.

Fifty-six castrated male progeny of crossbred (Chester White x Landrace x Large White x Yorkshire) dams fed an adequate diet (control, C), a control diet fed at one-third of C (restricted, R), or diets severely deficient in protein (PF) or restricted in nonprotein calories (RCal) were killed at age 25 weeks. Dams were fed their respective diets in the following regimens: C, 1.8 kg (6000 kcal daily) throughout pregnancy; R, 0.6 kg of C diet daily for 70 days, then 1.8 kg of C daily to parturition at about 114 days; PF, 1.8 kg of a "protein-free" diet (less than 0.2% protein) throughout pregnanc

Cerebellum-Cerebrum paired target magnetic stimulation on balance function and brain network of patients with stroke: A functional near-infrared spectroscopy pilot study.

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) modulation over the cerebellum, primary motor cortex, and supplementary motor cortex individually can improve the balance function of patients with stroke. However, whether their combination could have a better balance modulation effect is uncertain. Therefore, we hypothesized that performing TMS over a combination of these targets can regulate the balance function of patients with stroke. We compared the effects of one-session TMS on eye-open and eye-closed balance conditions in patients with stroke, using different target pairs of unilateral cerebellar

Gene expression microarray data from mouse CBS treated with rTMS for 30 days, mouse cerebrum and CBS treated with rTMS for 40 days.

This data article contains complementary tables related to the research article study entitled, 'Effects of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation on ER stress-related genes and glutamate, γ-aminobutyric acid, and glycine transporter genes in mouse brain' (Ikeda et al. (2017) [1]), which showed that rTMS modulates glutamate, GABA and glycine transporters and regulates ER stress-related genes. Here, we provide accompanying data collected using Affymetrix GeneChip microarrays to identify changes in gene expression in mouse CBS treated with rTMS for 30 days (Tables 1-21) and mouse cerebrum

Comparative studies of regional CNS blood flow autoregulation and responses to CO2 in the cat. Effects of altering arterial blood pressure and PaCO2 on rCBF of cerebrum, cerebellum, and spinal cord.

Autoregulation and CO2 responses were investigated concurrently in cerebrum, cerebellum, and spinal cord of 19 cats by means of hydrogen clearance. Under ketamine and nitrous oxide anesthesia at normal systemic mean arterial blood pressure (MABP 123 +/- 18.4 mmHg, mean +/- standard deviation) blood flow was 86 +/- 30.0 ml/100 g/min in the cerebrum, 48 +/- 13.6 ml/100 g/min in the cerebellum, and 46 +/- 18.7 ml/100 g/min in the spinal cord. During normocapnia (PaCO2 27-33 mmHg) for every mmHg of PaCO2 variation an average flow change of 1.7 ml/100 g/min was found in the cerebrum, corresponding

CeRebrUm and CardIac Protection with ALlopurinol in Neonates with Critical Congenital Heart Disease Requiring Cardiac Surgery with Cardiopulmonary Bypass (CRUCIAL): study protocol of a phase III, randomized, quadruple-blinded, placebo-controlled, Dutch multicenter trial.

BACKGROUND: Neonates with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) are at risk of brain injury that may result in adverse neurodevelopment. To date, no therapy is available to improve long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes of CCHD neonates. Allopurinol, a xanthine oxidase inhibitor, prevents the formation of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, thereby limiting cell damage during reperfusion and reoxygenation to the brain and heart. Animal and neonatal studies suggest that allopurinol reduces hypoxic-ischemic brain injury and is card

Neuroradiologic features of CASK mutations.

Mutations of the CASK gene are associated with X-linked mental retardation with microcephaly and disproportionate brain stem and cerebellar hypoplasia in females. The areas of the cerebrum, corpus callosum, pons, midbrain, and cerebellar vermis and hemisphere and a ratio of cerebrum/corpus callosum areas were measured in 5 female patients with CASK mutations, 67 female controls, and 5 patients with pontine hypoplasia. MR imaging in patients with CASK mutations revealed a normal size of the corpus callosum and a low ratio of the cerebrum/corpus callosum with a reduced area of the cerebrum, pons

Retinal Levels of Amyloid Beta Correlate with Cerebral Levels of Amyloid Beta in Young APPswe/PS1dE9 Transgenic Mice before Onset of Alzheimer's Disease.

OBJECTIVES: Retina abnormalities are related to cognitive disorders in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Retinal amyloid beta (Aβ) can be labeled by curcumin. We measured Aβ content in the cerebrum and retina of APPswe/PS1dE9 (APP) transgenic mice with early age to investigate the correlation between cerebrum and retina. METHODS: APP mice and age-matched wild-type mice were investigated every month from age 2 months to 6 months to assess changes in Aβ content in the retina and cerebrum. At the beginning of each month, mice were fed a curcumin diet (50 mg/kg/day) for 7 consecutive days.

Effects of copper administration on fetal and neonatal mice.

The effects of copper administration to neonatal male mice on the copper concentrations and activities of copper-containing enzymes in cerebrum, liver, and kidney were studied. Intraperitoneal copper injections at 7 and 10 days of age increased the activities of superoxide dismutase and cytochrome oxidase in cerebrum and liver, and also increased the copper concentrations in cerebrum, liver, and kidney at 13 days of age. Maternal copper administration during the late-gestational period (from 13 days gestation to delivery) decreased the activities of both enzymes and increased the copper concen

Mercury concentration in organs of contemporary Japanese.

Concentrations of inorganic mercury (IHg), methylmercury (MeHg), and total mercury (THg) were determined for autopsy samples from 46 Japanese subjects. Two laboratories (Labs A and B) participated in Hg analyses: Lab A for THg and IHg and Lab B for THg and MeHg. Total mercury concentration values were in good agreement between the two laboratories: the averages were several hundreds of ng/g in kidney cortex, kidney medulla, and liver, and were several tens of ng/g in cerebrum, cerebellum, heart, and spleen. Inorganic mercury accumulated more in kidney and liver: its percentage THg was 81-84% i

Feasibility of decoding cerebellar movement-related potentials for brain-computer interface applications.

Objective. In brain-computer interface (BCI) applications, signals are conventionally acquired from the cerebrum, and only a subset of the complex interactions that occur in several areas of the brain are collected. One area that has not been investigated for BCI application is the cerebellum, despite its involvement in movement and executive function. The present study aimed to determine the features of movement-related cerebellar electrocerebellography (ECeG) that are most useful for decoding, and how performance compares with conventional electroencephalography (EEG) recordings from the cere

Fetal brain development in diabetic guinea pigs.

Fetal brain development was investigated near term in guinea pigs rendered diabetic with streptozotocin. The liver and the placenta were used as reference organs. Compared to controls, those fetuses from diabetic animals had normal cerebrum and cerebellum weights, but higher liver and placenta weights in relation to fetal weights. Although liver and placenta cell number (DNA content) was unchanged, it was significantly increased in the fetal cerebrum and cerebellum of diabetics. Although the tissue protein concentration was decreased in the liver and the placenta, it was unchanged and even inc

A case of nonconvulsive status epilepticus with a reversible contralateral cerebellar lesion: temporal changes in magnetic resonance imaging and single-photon emission computed tomography finding.

A 67-year-old woman was brought to our institution because of unconsciousness. Clinical and electrophysiological findings lead us to diagnose her with nonconvulsive status epilepticus. Initial magnetic resonance imaging revealed hyperintensity in the left cerebral cortex and the right cerebellum on diffusion-weighted image and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR). Single-photon emission computed tomography showed increased blood flow in the left frontal cerebrum but not in the right cerebellum. The hyperintensity in the left cerebrum on the follow-up FLAIR was still present. The contral

Caffeine and its dimethylxanthines and fetal cerebral development in rat.

The relationship between the distribution and pharmacokinetic behavior of caffeine and its dimethylxanthines in pregnant rats and fetuses and fetal cerebral development was compared in four groups with different modes of oral caffeine ingestion by the mothers. During the premating period and pregnancy, female Wistar rats were divided into 0.04% caffeine (C) and water (W) groups, respectively. When the groups are expressed as W or C before mating-W or C during pregnancy, the fetal body weight was low in the three caffeine-treated groups (W-C, C-W and C-C) and the fetal cerebral weight was the l

[Diagnostic evaluation of meningeal syndrome in otogenic intracranial complications and infection].

In 258 patients, neurological symptoms of otogenic leptomeningitis and diagnostic importance of the meningeal symptom-complex in the clinical development of other intracranial complications and sepsis were investigated. Otogenic leptomeningitis was characterized by the meningeal syndrome, rigidity of occipital muscles combined with Brudzinski's sign and Kernig's sign, albumin-cytologic dissociation in the cerebrospinal fluid, and, frequently, unilateral lesion of cranial nerves. Meningeal symptoms in the case of cerebrum and cerebellum abscesses did not always indicate leptomeningitis. Kernig'
