Hearing loss is a common problem that everyone faces at some point in their life. There are three main types of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural, and mixed. Conductive hearing loss occurs when an external sound is not able to gain access to the inner ear because of some type of obstruction, e.g., cerumen in the auditory canal and fluid in the middle ear. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is due to damage to the inner ear, which affects the nerve conduction pathway from the inner ear to the brain. Mixed hearing loss is a combination of both conductive and sensorineural hearing loss. Sens

One hundred and thirteen dogs of different breeds and with different clinical forms of external otitis were mycologically and bacteriologically examined. Forty six of those dogs showed abnormal cerumen with a high yeasts contamination. These yeasts belong to four species: Malassezia pachydermatis (80.4%), Cryptococcus laurentii (13.1%), Candida parapsilosis (4.3%) and Trichosporon cutaneum (2.1%). All strains, excepting C. laurentii were highly lipolytic. Most of the clinical cases associated with those yeasts were chronic, with hyperkeratosis and lichenification, and most of them were relapse

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the external auditory canal (EAC) is a very rare malignant tumor and its diagnosis is frequently missed because of the superficial nature of biopsies. A 30 year old male presented with 6 months history of recurrent painful right ear discharge. On examination there was a nodule of 2 cms in diameter. The microscopic examination of the punch biopsy specimen of tumor revealed typical features of an adenoid cystic carcinoma. While reporting the biopsies of external auditory canal one should keep the adenoid cystic carcinoma as one of the possible differentials, especiall

Ceruminous adenoma (ceruminoma) of the external auditory meatus is a rare neoplasm with benign clinical behavior. This tumor is mainly composed of the ceruminous gland cells (modified apocrine sweat glands). These glands are localized deep in the skin mostly in the cartilaginous part of the external auditory meatus. The most often symptom of the ceruminous adenoma of external auditory meatus is the unilateral conductive hearing loss. Occasionally symptoms of this tumor (pain, otorrhoea) can result from an otitis externa secondary to meatus obstruction. Ceruminous adenoma should be radical exci

Itching of the ear canal, with oozing, edema and cracking of the skin due to absence or insufficiency of wax was treated in more than 200 cases by instructing the patient to massage the ear canal with a cotton tip applicator soaked with a hydrocortisone preparation and inserted a half to three-quarters of an inch beyond the meatus. Some 95 per cent of patients reported good to excellent results in three to four days after the beginning of treatment. In the remainder results were fair.

This paper describes an audiologic test battery for hearing-impaired children which includes otoscopic examination, tympanometry, pure-tone audiometry, speech perception testing, and hearing aid evaluation. Several of the procedures and modifications to apparatus have been developed specifically for use with deaf children. Clinical data are presented from 160 hearing-impaired children (age range three-16 years). Eighteen percent of their ears were found to contain excessive cerumen and to require ear canal irrigation. The incidence of abnormal tympanograms was high for young children but decre

In the context of Middle and Late Pleistocene eastern Eurasian human crania, the external auditory exostoses (EAE) of the late archaic Xuchang 1 and 2 and the Xujiayao 15 early Late Pleistocene human temporal bones are described. Xujiayao 15 has small EAE (Grade 1), Xuchang 1 presents bilateral medium EAE (Grade 2), and Xuchang 2 exhibits bilaterally large EAE (Grade 3), especially on the right side. These cranial remains join the other eastern Eurasian later Pleistocene humans in providing frequencies of 61% (N = 18) and 58% (N = 12) respectively for archaic and early modern human samples. Th

In order to compound a new drug combination against canine otitis externa (OE), 515 dogs affected with OE were subjected to physical examination and microbiological analysis of their ear exudates. OE was erythematous-ceruminous in 83 per cent and suppurative in 17 per cent of the patient material. Erythematous-ceruminous inflammations were characterised by severe pruritus and accumulation of brownish, greasy cerumen in the auditory canal. The yeast Malassezia pachydermatis was isolated from the ears of 76 per cent of the dogs, often in combination with Staphylococcus intermedius bacteria. M pa

Zinc sulfate has been used for therapy of granulations of the trachea and ear that have not responded to usual treatment. This paper will report on current indications for zinc sulfate and the resulting success in managing granulomata of the ear canal and mastoid bowl. Some mastoid bowls have been large and hard to clean, especially in the posterior and lateral parts. A method of cleaning using indirect otoscopy and curved aspirators in conjunction with adequate lubrication will be described. Treatment of otalgia in both the ear canal and mastoid bowl due to otitis externa sicca and results of

Maple syrup urine disease (MSUD) is an inborn error of metabolism caused by defects in the branched-chain α-ketoacid dehydrogenase complex, which results in elevations of the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in plasma, α-ketoacids in urine, and production of the pathognomonic disease marker, alloisoleucine. The disorder varies in severity and the clinical spectrum is quite broad with five recognized clinical variants that have no known association with genotype. The classic presentation occurs in the neonatal period with developmental delay, failure to thrive, feeding difficulties, and maple

External auditory canal cancer is a rare disease which can be treated by surgery or chemoradiation. The most common histological type is squamous cell carcinoma, but rare types such as adenocarcinoma have been reported and are thought to be derived from the ceruminous glands. Here, we present a case of ceruminous adenocarcinoma, not otherwise specified (NOS) in the external auditory canal. A 72-year-old woman was referred to our department with discomfort due to a mass in the external ear canal. No typical symptoms of malignancy, such as pain or bleeding, were noted at the initial examination.

Tinnitus is a common disorder with many possible causes. Most cases of tinnitus are subjective, but occasionally the tinnitus can be heard by an examiner. Otologic problems, especially hearing loss, are the most common causes of subjective tinnitus. Common causes of conductive hearing loss include external ear infection, cerumen impaction, and middle ear effusion. Sensorineural hearing loss may be caused by exposure to excessive loud noise, presbycusis, ototoxic medications, or Meniere's disease. Unilateral hearing loss plus tinnitus should increase suspicion for acoustic neuroma. Subjective t
