Breast Cancer With Airway Edema Caused by Metastatic Fracture of the Cervical Vertebra.

Bone is a common site of breast cancer metastasis, with the spine showing a particularly high affinity. An 83-year-old Japanese woman with Alzheimer's disease presented with a palpable mass in her left breast. A needle biopsy revealed invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast, hormone receptor-positive, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2)-negative, with lymph node metastasis. Chest dynamic computed tomography showed no distant metastases. She was diagnosed with luminal-type, stage IIB (T2N1M0) breast cancer and underwent surgery. During induction of general anesthesia, intubation was

C4 constant vertebra: a novel benchmark of physiological cervical sagittal alignment.

BACKGROUND: Cervical sagittal alignment is essential, and there is considerable debate as to what constitutes physiological sagittal alignment. The purpose of this study was to identify constant parameters for characterizing cervical sagittal alignment under physiological conditions. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in which asymptomatic subjects were recruited to undergo lateral cervical spine radiographs. Each subject was classified according to three authoritative cervical sagittal morphology classifications, followed by the evaluation of variations in radiological parameters

[3D Fluoroscopy-Navigated Magerl Fusion of the 1st and 2nd Cervical Vertebra].

Background: Treatment of type II fractures of the odontoid process is still controversial. Besides conservative treatment, there are surgical options, including anterior screw fixation, as first described by Böhler and Magerl, or procedures using a dorsal approach. Many authors prefer dorsal fusion of C1 and 2, due to the reliable, biomechanical stability. In this context, pedicle screw fixation, as described by Harms, and transarticular screw fixation of the atlantoaxial joints, as described by Magerl, have to be mentioned. With the use of intraoperative fluoroscopic navigation, the risk of n

[Manipulations of cervical vertebrae and trauma of the vertebral artery. Report of two cases].

Vertebrobasilar-distribution stroke is a rare but sometimes severe complication of chiropractic neck manipulation. We report two patients with dissections of the vertebral arteries authenticated two and six days after the cervical manipulation. In the first case, a Wallenberg's syndrome occurred due to a dissection of the right intracranial vertebral artery; the patient was treated with anticoagulant therapy but little improvement of the disorder was noted. The second patient had transitory neurologic manifestations which led to the discovery of an intimal tear of the ostium of the right verte

Paget sarcoma of the cervical vertebrae: an autopsy case report and review of the literature.

A 69 year old Japanese woman was hospitalized for emergency treatment of sudden onset of tetraplegia and somnolence. The patient had a long history of occipital pain without definite diagnosis. After admission, the patient progressively developed generalized palsy including respiratory paralysis, and died of bronchopneumonia. Autopsy revealed osteosarcoma of the cervical vertebrae with the features of Paget's disease involving the skull and the cervical vertebrae. Paget sarcoma is rare in Japan, where Paget's disease of the bone is an uncommon condition. A review of the world literature failed

Unilateral palsy of the hypoglossal nerve in a patient with tuberculosis of the first cervical vertebra.

A 26-year-old female developed a unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy in association with tuberculosis of the first cervical vertebra. The extensive soft tissue and bony abnormalities were demonstrated only by computerized axial tomography. Involvement of the hypoglossal nerve within the skull by tuberculous granulation tissue was the most likely mechanism for the nerve palsy.

[Variants of congenital hypoplasia of the arches of the upper cervical vertebrae and their clinical significance].

A clinico-roentgenological examination of the transitional craniovertebral division has revealed a high incidence and a great diversity of isolated underdevelopment of the arches of the upper cervical vertebra--from their fissure-like splitting to complete absence. Usually these forms create no preconditions for disturbances of any functions, do not manifest clinically, and can be regarded as variants of normal structure of the craniovertebral division.

Morphological Study of the Foramen Transversarium of the Typical Cervical Vertebrae with Clinical Correlation.

BACKGROUND: The foramen transversarium (FT) is a distinctive anatomical structure in the cervical vertebrae for the passage of the vertebral artery, vein, and sympathetic plexus. The FT is a feature in all cervical vertebrae and is important for normal vertebral physiology. In this article, the anatomy of the FT is presented and discussed with respect to the variability of this foramen, its structural dimensions, and its clinical applications. The relevance for the contents of the FT are important because they contain nerves and blood vessels, and given its intimate relation with the neurovasc

Automated Metrics for the Diagnosis of Instability Between the 2nd and 7th Cervical Vertebrae.

Diagnosing cervical spine instability with flexion-extension radiographs is challenging, as current guidelines are based on limited cadaver studies and do not adequately account for level, vertebral size, or patient effort. There is a need for automated cervical instability metrics anchored to normative reference data, accompanied by evidence on how often abnormal findings occur in real clinical populations and which soft-tissue injury patterns they can detect. We developed and evaluated fully automated, radiographic-based cervical intervertebral motion (IVM) metrics-adapted from prior lumbar

First evidence of spinal arthropathy and congenital block of the cervical vertebrae in Temnospondyli.

Despite recent reports, the fossil record of pathologies in vertebrates is still patchy in terms of phylogeny, geological age and paleogeography. Here, we report several cases of pathological vertebrae in several specimens of the Late Triassic temnospondyl Metoposaurus krasiejowensis from Krasiejów. The presence of cervical block vertebrae (atlas-axis complex) is the oldest such case reported for any fossil tetrapod and the first such case reported in temnospondyls. Spinal arthropathy (or spinal arthritis) is the first such case for a non-amniote. Based on different levels of fusion among the

Histiocytic Sarcoma Involving Cervical Vertebra: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Histiocytic sarcoma (HS) is a rare neoplasm composed of cells with immunohistochemical characteristics of mature histiocytes. It can be disseminated or localized and usually involves the skin, spleen, and gastrointestinal tract. Primary involvement of the vertebral column is extremely rare. We report a 29-year-old female who presented with neck pain and had a destructive 35*43*48 mm lesion in C2 with a paravertebral extension. The initial biopsy did not lead to the correct diagnosis. She later developed dysphagia, and the anterior approach was used for tumor decompression. The diagnosis of cer

Complete fracture of the lamina of the sixth cervical vertebra with hemiplegia: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: We report the rare case of a 27-year-old man who presented a right sided complete hemiplegia after a neck trauma due to a road traffic accident. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Computed tomography revealed a complete fracture of the C6 lamina including a partial fracture of the right articular process with complete rotation of the fragment into the spinal canal with a major compression of the right side of the cord. The patient was operated urgently and underwent posterior approach for C6 arch removal followed by a C6C7 anterior fusion as T2 weighted magnetic resonance imaging revealed a

Laryngohyoid and cervical vertebra lesions after a fall from a low height.

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and nature of cervical trauma in the case of low-height falls (up to 2.50 m). A retrospective study was carried out on 114 autopsy cases that died after low-height falls. For each case, age, sex, manner and cause of death, estimated height of fall, ground type, type of primary impact, type of laryngeal and hyoid bone trauma, presence of associated local trauma in the neck and cephalic region, and toxicological data were reported. Fractures of the hyoid bone and/or of the laryngeal cartilages were present in 2.5% of the cases (n = 3). Cervica
