AIM: At arrival in new home country, internationally adopted children often have intestinal parasites. International adoptees also exhibit more behavioral problems than their biological peers. We examined whether intestinal parasite infections in international adoptees on arrival in Finland are associated with their later behavioral and emotional problems.

Data from 2 separate samples using the Strange Situation paradigm were combined to assess the quality of attachment relationships in adoptive and nonadoptive mother-infant pairs. Infants were between 13 and 18 months at the time of observation. This report describes a case of hairy leukoplakia in an HIV-infected child, and the treatment adopted. It was diagnosed by clinical and laboratory examinations, using exfoliative cytology (staining by the Papanicolaou method) and additional information was obtained by optical microscope analysis. In view of the lack of painful symptoms, of the innocuous nature of the lesion and large amount of medicines used by the patient, we decided to preserve and monitor the lesion.

Adolescent parenthood reduces the opportunities and optimal outcomes for both mother and child, yet pregnant teenagers rarely consider adoption. This paper reports a qualitative study that explored the reasons this option is so rarely examined.
